Current Talk '04 I / 1840 Time Paradox
« on: June 13, 2004, 10:54:49 PM »
Dr. Lang, you explained so well the 1795 and 1897 time travel discrepancies, I was wondering what you thought of 1840?  Do the rules you stated for 1897 also apple to 1840?  I ask that because the characters in the present time do not remember at all the hauntings by Gerard and Daphne.

Current Talk '04 I / Julia's Statement to Liz in Nov. 1967
« on: May 27, 2004, 10:57:05 PM »
About one week prior to the start of 1795, Julia tells Elizabeth that she will be leaving Collinwood in about one week, her work almost done.

Does anyone know if they were planning to write her off the show or just have her live elsewhere?

With 1795 coming up, it seemed they were trying to tie up the loose end of her still living at Collinwood once the show returned from 1795, and they apparently forgot all about it when 1795 ended.

Current Talk '04 I / DS & Musical Score
« on: May 11, 2004, 11:13:24 PM »
Was Dark Shadows the first soap opera to not have organ music?

I went to a site called www.wost.com and was surprised that shows like Somerset and Another World still had organ music going to the mid 70's.

Current Talk '04 I / Other then DC, who created Barnabas?
« on: April 19, 2004, 02:02:05 PM »
I read in an interview with Art Wallce in a publication from the 1980's (I think the Dark Shadows Files) in which he claimed to have created Barnabas Collins himself.  I always thought that he was long gone by this time.

Anyone have any information on this?

Current Talk '04 I / Announcing of Recasts on DS
« on: March 21, 2004, 09:48:10 PM »
Watching the early Barnabas episodes , it surprised me that they would announce the change from the first Dr. Woodard (Richard Woods) to the second Dr. Woodard (Robert Gerringer).  Woods appeared in only 2 episodes somewhat apart from each other and the audience wouldnt have been that identified with him in such a small role at that time to be informed.  The first time I saw DS, I didn't remember the first Dr. Woodard at all.

When they recast Lt. Riley during the Laura story, there was no annoucement, even though the change occured the very next day.  I would think in that case, there should have been some announcement in the actor change.  The second actor was better, the first was too New York sounding.

The same for Harry Johnson.  Craig Slocum had the role for several months and was prominently featured for a while.  Yet there was no mention made of the new actor (Edwrad Marshall) replacing CS during the opening credits he first took the role over in.

Matthew Morgans recast didn't get announced but Sam Evan's did.

Current Talk '04 I / The return to 1796
« on: March 10, 2004, 01:01:14 AM »
What are your opinions on this mini flashback where Barnabas goes back to 1796 to save Vicky from the gallows?

I thought they could have done without this and either write out Vicky and Jeff leaving town or just have her fade off with Peters ghost.

1795 was such a great storyline, they never should have changed the ending (I will not even get into the second return with Barnabas and Kitty).

I have read posts stating that the fans demanded that an explanation be given as to what happened to Vicky and they interrupted the Quentin story to put together the Vicky storyline.  I just don't find that logical given the fact that by the time that Betsy Durkin's VW went off with Peter's ghost aired on TV, that viwers had enough time to write in or call in to get an explanation for Vicky to air so fast.

By the time of the filming of this episode, the writers must have had the 1796 return already written as there are about 10 shows apart from Vickys vanishing to Barnabas telling Julia the story of the his last night in 1796.

Current Talk '04 I / If 1795 was done the way they originally intended.
« on: February 07, 2004, 12:13:13 AM »
Ron Sproat once stated that Barnabas' origin was to be originally set up as told through ghosts and books instead of a time travel story.

This would have let the writers keep what had been said about Barnabas' origins without anything being compressed into 5 months and going against continuity.  The story would have taken place over years and the characters of the 18th century Collins' would be seen at various stages of their life.  I doubt they would have had a with trial though.  It would have also been able to keep with the 1830's as being Barnabas' first time as a vampire as opposed to 1795.

What do you think the story would have been like if they did go this route?

Current Talk '04 I / Idea for New DS Willie Loomis
« on: February 02, 2004, 11:36:42 PM »
Tom Lenk (Andrew on "Buffy" and "Angel") would make the perfect Willie Loomis in the WB DS.

Here is info on him:

Current Talk '03 II / The Tad Collins Dilemma
« on: December 23, 2003, 09:20:36 PM »
If David Henesy wanted to leave DS, they should have had a recast for David Collins prior to the start of 1840 and then use the new actor as Tad during 1840.  That way, the original plan could have been used.  The new actor would have been more accepted as Tad since DH would never have played the part.  Having him play David Collins for the last week or so of the Summer of 1970 would have allowed for the David-Tad connection to carry over to 1840.

Current Talk '03 II / 1897 after 1840
« on: October 21, 2003, 06:50:32 PM »
Unfortunately we never got to see how 1897 set up following the conclusion of the 1840 story with Edith and Gabriel now dead.

I think the ramnifications hit 1897 much more then the present time as it is only two generations later.

IMHO...Quentin I and Daphne most likely never returned and neither did Desmonf & Leticia.  They wouldn't want the memories of what happened to them constantly around them.

Perhaps this led to a more placid time with the parents of Judith, Edward, Quentin, and Carl now living past the time they originally died and raising the children themselves.

The personalities of the children may have also changed with their parents raising them instead of their grandmother Edith.  Quentin II may never have become the lout he was and never had a werewolf curse placed upon him, so there is never any ghost for David and Amy to find in 1969.

Barnabas & Julia now never went to 1897 as Quentin II may have lived a normal life with Jenny and died a normal death.  Quentin II's son may have moved away when he got older and never came back, raising a family elsewhere.   Lenore still married and had a daughter who married a man named Jennings.

The Quentin in the present time is now the real grandson of Quentin II now living with the family.  He may have arrived at Collinwood in 1970 at the time of the Leviatian's.

What we have here is following the Adam storyline, there is a year where there was nothing happening at Collinwood until somehow the Leviathan's got hold of Barnabas in November 1969 and sent him to their dimension making it appear it is really 1796.
Current Talk '03 II / Mamorstein & Swann
« on: October 17, 2003, 09:43:31 PM »
Was there ever an explanation for their departure from DS?

Mamorstein was writing up until around September 1967.  I thought his episodes were good.  The team of Mamorstein/Sproat/Caldwell kept things from going too far out.

Current Talk '03 II / OT But Interesting: Bing Crosby
« on: October 16, 2003, 06:19:01 PM »
I found this info on him from the Internet Movie Data Base and it seemed so unusual I thought I would share it here:

He left a clause in his will stating that his sons could not collect his money until they were in their 80s.

He had six sons, three are still alive and one daughter.

Current Talk '03 II / Time Travelling Barnabas (SPOILERS)
« on: September 18, 2003, 10:17:15 PM »
It would have been simpler for Barnabas to use the staircase as opposed to the I Ching to get to 1840 and just leave the 1840 Barnabas untouched in the chained coffin.

Current Talk '03 II / Abner Collins
« on: September 09, 2003, 06:55:42 PM »
Maybe he was Flora's husband.  1841 PT is so different from regular 1841 that it is possible.

Abner was probably the son of another of Joshua's cousins.
