Current Talk '07 II / Nicholas Blair's motivation
« on: September 08, 2007, 04:19:49 PM »
I've just gotten into Nicholas Blair's debut (a LOT of episodes given that I watched Dr.Lang's debut right after the Fest) and after 4-5 episodes am a little lost as to what he wanted initially.  It's  clear he's an agent of the Devil and Angelique sold her soul to him for another chance at destroying Barnabas but why exactly would he then come to Collinwood and help her out after Trask exorcises her?  It would make more sense to do nothing and claim her soul for eternity.  Unless he just likes causing trouble for the hell of it he's got nothing against Barnabas or anyone else.

One option might be that Nicholas is in love with her, or rather in love with her darker and evil side which he hopes to bring out (sort of a dark Pygmalion) to create the perfect mate for him.  But then he also falls for Maggie Evans, who is about as evil as a newborn.

So what the heck is up with Nicholas?

Very much so

I've been watching the revival series lately and regretting it ending after one season.  Anyone do any fan fiction on this series or a speculative season 2?  Links would be most appreciated, with a fine bottle of sherry and some sharp cheddar cheese to the winner

I always assumed the festivals were held in NY and LA due to the majority of the guests living in those areas (or some owning homes in both places) but some variety would be nice.  While I'm sure they'll never come to New England it does seem unfair that Chicago or Dallas or SOMEWHERE not on the coasts get a fest once.

I do agree that these sorts of conventions did some fresh blood (pun more or less intended) involved in the planning every now and again.

One idea I had was that instead of a skit, the 1988 stage production of the 1795 flashback be recreated with LP and KLS in character.

Lamb chop!  You mean the poor guy didn't even get the free meal the rest of us (well we paid $60 but not for the actual food REALLY) did.  Wow I would have thought all your expenses would be paid if you did a convention as a guest.

I wonder if someone ,just glancing at the headline of the item, wouldn't think Jonathan wasn't auctioning off the chance to have dinner with him and chat about Dark Shadows!  He could probably just earn a living (and lose his sanity) doing that if he really needed to.

The Arsenic script is a really neat item as I think I saw him do the show in Boston (I thought it was 88 but others have told me 87 is accurate) and he scared me quite a bit as a spry 8 year old.  I can only imagine the laughter if Jonathan's response to why he killed a man would have been "he said I had a face that looked like Barnabas Collins".

Oddly enough though Jonathan did look a bit like Karloff for the production I always felt.

What's funny about this is how many people just come and go through Dr. Lang's house.  Victoria, Elizabeth, Jeff, Julia and Barnabas all just come and go.  At no point does Elizabeth seem the slightest bit perturbed that cousin Barnabas is helping himself through a dead man's home at will.

I certainly wish Thayer David was in more episodes, he brings so much with so little to Professor Stokes.

I'm actually all the way up to 506 now, partly because the volume 8 I bought from MPI was missing Disc One (I called and they said they would mail a replacement, how reliable are they?) so I missed 493-502 but other than Sam nearly offing Angelique and more ripping off of James Whale doesn't look like I missed much.

My viewing will def slow down with my vacation being over today.

Well I think Julia staying on could be explained by Elizabeth liking her and letting her stay on. At some point Barnabas probably put in a good word as well.  It's just rather amusing that a dead man's house has people just coming and going.  I suppose it's JUST plausible that once he knew Cassandra was after him, Dr. Lang changed his will to make Barnabas the beneficiary.

The other thing I noticed is how unimportant Collinwood itself is becoming.  Far more action takes place in Dr. Lang's house or the Old House.

Willie Loomis return was a good moment but so far not much has been done with him.  It's a far cry from the days where he and Frid were in just about every other scene together.

TLATKLS?  I would assume KLS is Kathryn Leigh Scott

Oh yeah one further question - is it around this time that Alexandra Moltke starts to think about leaving? She really has very little to do in most of these episodes though her scene with JF where she think it's her fault he's leaving is nicely played.

I had a few questions about the Lang/Adam storyline era as I had never seen most of those episodes until buying the DVD's lately.

After Dr. Lang dies how do Barnabas and Julia keep coming to his house to conduct the experiment and chat?  Did he leave it to them in his will or something? It would seem to make more sense if they had transported the equipment into Barnabas' basement rather than leave things as they are.  The town seems to know he's dead as well.

It's hinted at, but how much do Professor Stokes and Cassandra know about each other?  He seems to know something about the portrait of Angelique and Cassandra was his student right?

Overall I have to say I have been thoroughly enjoying these episodes.  Could do with a bit more Carolyn, Roger and Elizabeth (or was Joan Bennett away) and little less Barnabas and Julia (The two best characters IMO but they are in nearly every scene for 25 episodes) but the double stories of Adam and the Dream Curse are well set up.

Sounds like we have our Collinsport Players skit for 2008!

This was pretty good stuff.  Sarah and Maggie were played to a T.

I have to say, editing the episodes is somewhat irritating to me.  So far the only thing I caught is the credits AFTER the cast were eliminated in one of the episodes right before Dr. Lang's death.  But taking out Bathia's prompter is virtually criminal!
