Current Talk '04 II / Re: adam(the big louse)
« on: November 13, 2004, 07:29:03 AM »
I actually like the beginning of the Adam storyline. I just watched it all the way through for the first time since I first saw it on the Sci Fi Channel years ago. I feel really sorry for him in the beginning, and I thought that Barnabas and Julia handled it all very badly. Then there's the classic scenes between Adam and Willie (the chicken leg!). I thought Robert Rodan did a really good job and also thought that a lot of his scenes with Nancy Barrett were really sweet and sad. I think in the end that the storyline just went on for too long, and it did get tiring seeing Adam being a jerk and kidnapping Vicki too many times, although I stil always felt that Adam was completely justified in being a jerk--he was treated really badly by Barnabas and Julia, the two people who brought him to life. I do see though, as mentioned above, how the storyline really veered away from what the show had been like up until that point, and it really isn't as compelling, although Nicholas Blair is one of my favorite DS characters, and I really enjoyed Marie Wallace as Eve--she really seemed to enjoy the part! I guess one of the things I love about DS is that even when there's a storyline that I don't llike that much, there's always something else going on at the same time that makes it worth it. Right now I'm at the beginning of the Quentin's ghost storyline, and while Amy's high-pitched over-emoting really gets on my nerves (if she just didn't seem like she was yelling all of her lines!), I love the storyline with Chris/the werewolf and the last episodes with Joe Haskell (great work by Joel Crothers!).

« on: November 13, 2004, 07:03:19 AM »
Thanks so much for the link to that article--a very touching tribute! It's great that it came about in response to a message left on an answering machine (by a DS fan no doubt!). It answered a lot of questions that I'm sure we've all had for a long time. I'm not sure if this has been posted here, but Dark Shadows Journal Online has added another wonderful piece on Don written by someone who corresponded with him over the past 10 years, and there's also a picture that I assume was taken sometime during that time period. My mom has bipolar disorder, and whle she generally does pretty well, I know that she fights a constant battle with depression. As others have said, hopefully Don is now at peace. I, too, am glad that I'll always have his wonderful performances on DS to enjoy! Oh, I also agree with ClaudeNorth about the photo in the article--wow!

Current Talk '04 II / Re: Jonathan Frid Flubbing His Lines
« on: November 04, 2004, 06:21:44 AM »
I've always thought that a lot of the flubs made the characters seem more real to me, more natural. It does seem Jonathan Frid did it the most, but I've also never found him to be less than convincing. I think Connie may be on to something as far as JF seeming to flub his lines more with certain types of dialogue. A lot of his big scenes seem like monologues to me, like the one Gerard mentioned, and he just nails them. My favorite scene is when he tells Carolyn and Vicki the story of Josette's death! It's a huge piece of dialogue and he's so good.

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 II / Re: KLS on Dallas on SoapNet Today
« on: November 04, 2004, 05:57:54 AM »
I just started watching Dallas again on DVD and am looking forward to seeing Dennis Patrick on, I believe, the next season (they've just released the mini-series and Season 1). It's funny because I've been rediscovering a lot of old favorite tv series on DVD and so far I've seen Lara Parker on S.W.A.T., Thayer David on Starsky and Hutch, and Kathryn Lee Scott on Little House On The Prairie and Magnum P.I.!! I love how there's this sort of Dark Shadows connection for me! When I have time, I keep meaning to take some screen caps from the above shows to post for everyone.

I've been away from this board for awhile and just logged on and read this news--very sad!! Don has always been one of my favorites on DS too. Aside from the obvious reasons, he had something special about him and, of course, that wonderful voice! He will be greatly missed but, as others have said, always remembered!

Current Talk '04 I / Re:Dark Shadows: DVD or Video?
« on: April 17, 2004, 01:10:57 PM »
Others may know more about this, but I think I've heard that MPI will release the pre-Barnabas episodes on DVD after they finish the series. I would almost bet on it, since they must be making some money if they're up to set 12 already. I guess that would mean about 25-30 sets total to have the entire series. That's a lot of sets, but still so much better then having to buy the series of video--how many tapes is that? I'm amazed at how good the show looks on DVD and it seems to look better and better as the show progresses.

Current Talk '04 I / Re:Dark Shadows DVDs for Sale
« on: April 17, 2004, 01:02:31 PM »
I, too, buy most of my DVDs from Deep Discount DVD and have always been really pleased with their service. I've sometimes gotten pre-orders on the day before the actual release date, which has never happened when I've ordered from Amazon. DDD also sometimes has the DS sets priced below $40 when they're pre-orders. I really haven't been able to find a better price for these anywhere else.

Current Talk '04 I / Re:Angelique..why do people LIKE this woman?
« on: April 09, 2004, 01:26:54 PM »
I always ask myself why I don't hate Angelique because I know, as many have said here, that she is just EVIL! But for most of the reasons cited, I just can't help but love her. It's always exciting when Angelique shows up and, again like many have said, she really believes she's right. Then there are times when I find myself feeling sorry for her, at least a little, like during the Cassandra storyline and then later when she's under Nicholas' thumb. Crazy or not, in the end I always end up thinking she's just sad because she just can never let go of her love for Barnabas!

Current Talk '04 I / Re:But What About The REAL Dark Shadows?
« on: April 06, 2004, 04:39:31 AM »
Maybe I'm not qualified to say this since I don't watch very many new tv shows, but I just feel that there isn't a lot of creativity anymore. I know some people would laugh at a lot of the old shows that I love, but they just seem different to me. Yes, DS had all of the props falling apart, actors flubbing lines, etc. but it was imaginative!! Like many of the shows everyone's mentioned in the thread in the Calendar section. Then there's the fact that shows are shorter so we can be inundated with even more commercials and those annoying logos that stay on the screen the whole time you're watching something, and I won't even get started on how much they cut out of older shows in syndication...

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 I / Lara Parker on S.W.A.T.
« on: April 06, 2004, 04:23:49 AM »
I love 70s cop shows and bought the first season on DVD having never seen it before--it was really cheap. Anyway, I was watching an episode last night and all of a sudden there's Lara Parker! I've really only seen her on DS and in the DS movies, so I was so excited! I wish I knew how to do screen caps because she looked really beautiful. I'm wondering if she appears on the show again, as she played the girlfriend of one of the main characters and they both talked about getting married in the episode. It was funny too, because this episode not only had Lara but future sex symbols Farrah Fawcett and a red-headed Loni Anderson! Lara played a photographer/publicist covering a Miss American Beauty contest and, like I said, the girlfriend of one of the guys on the S.W.A.T team. I'm hoping she'll be in more of the episodes, although there's only a few left in the set.

How about American Gothic? I know it didn't last long and I don't remember if I even got to see all of it, but I remember liking it.  I've seen the kid from the show, Lucas Black, in several movies and always thought he was a really good young actor.

I've finally caught up to these episodes on DVD!! I've never seen these before and have to say that I'm really loving this storyline. I agree with all of the comments about Angelique making a really good vampire--very seductive. It's really strange seeing her in such a subserviant role under Nicholas, although I'm sure it won't be long until she hatches a scheme of her own. Then there's Willie. More and more in the last few months, I've started to think that Barnabas can be very cruel. He and Julia certainly handled the Adam situation all wrong, and Barnabas just shows absolutely no regard for Willie! It's an interesting aspect to Barnabas and Julia, who I usually see as sort of the heroes of the show. Love Nicholas, as always, and it is great to see Joe back in the spotlight. I know he leaves the show this year and I have a feeling this is all going to end badly for him. I'll be sorry to see him go--Is there a nicer, more well-adjusted person in Collinsport?

Current Talk '04 I / Re:But What About The REAL Dark Shadows?
« on: April 04, 2004, 05:27:19 AM »
I literally don't watch anything on tv anymore! I still have cable because I tape Gunsmoke on The Westerns Channel and Bewitched on TVland, but that's it. I know my priorities are completely not in order, but I buy a lot of tv shows on DVD. I just make up my own prime time viewing schedule. The few new shows I do like (24, Alias, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under) I've just decided to wait until they come out on DVD and then I'll either rent or buy them. That way I can watch them when I want, as many as I want, and best of all--no commercials! I've been buying all of the Dark Shadows sets, and Saturday night is Dark Shadows night. I'll check out the new DS, but I just don't get into too many new shows. I'm just more and more hopelessly drawn to old shows.
