Title: Studio 54?
Post by: Brian on June 30, 2006, 03:08:17 AM
I'm watching a documentary (not a porn film!) called GAY SEX IN THE 70S.  Referenced halfway thru is a "former TV studio" that was transformed to the disco STUDIO 54.  Was this the old DS studios? does anyone know?

No, this wasn't the old DS studio.  Studio 54 was, I believe, on 42nd Street.  It's now the Roundabout Theater and was the home of the revival of CABARET from a few years ago.  I think the recent revival of THREEPENNY OPERA played there as well.

I believe the DS studio is on 53rd Street, and was the Red Zone nightclub for a while.

For the record, The Roundabout Theatre is located at 254 W. 54th St., and "The Three Penny Opera" closed this past Sunday.  ;)

Which makes sense...Studio 54 on 54th Street.

Just checked and the revival of CABARET originally played at the Henry Miller Theater/Kit Kat Klub on 43rd Street, which is where I must have seen it, before moving to Studio 54.  I was staying at the Marriott Marquis (it might have been during a Fest weekend) when I saw it and I remember leaving the hotel, heading towards 42nd Street, and happening to run into someone I know here in Philly.

Not that this means anything to anyone, but I'm relieved that my memory wasn't failing me...It's all I have going for me, you know... ;)

Growing old sucks doesn't it Claude?  LOL!  ;)  I'd forget my head if it was attached!   8)

Growing old may suck but it sure beats the alternative. I guess we're finding out what the Stones mean when they sing      What a Drag it is getting Old.  Happy 4th All, Elmont...

I went to the old studio once, back in '92.  Too bad I didn't get into fandom until 1990.  If I'd gotten in earlier I would have gone to that party at the Red Zone before whatever Fest that was ('88?).

Anyway, maybe I'll stroll down that way this August, see what's there now.  Anyone know?

Well, here's the real story.  Studio 54 was a TV studio, used primarily for What's My Line? during the 50s up to the early 60s, when it was moved to the Ed Sullivan Theater, now home to David Letterman.  It fell into disrepair until it was turned into a disco (THE disco) in 1977.  As to the DS studio at 433 W. 53rd Street, it is now home to The Montel Williams Show.

Actually, I believe the Roundabout Theatre refers to the company that puts on productions in the Studio 54 venue. They have several venues in NYC, including the American Airlines Theatre. They haven't renamed Studio 54. It still goes by that name in the company's publicity materials, including the poster for the recent production of Threepenny Opera.

It was the '89 Fest. And that party was an amazing experience. It was the first Fest event I ever attended, and it pretty much spoiled me because no subsequent Fest event has ever been able to equal it for me. A picture of me at the party is even in the Fest's Dark Shadows Festival Memory Book 1983-1993 - though, of course, I'll never tell (publicly, anyway) which person is me.  [b003]

The DS studio was the home to ABC's Ryan's Hope for that show's entire run.
A few Hope eps feature recognizable DS sets.

I remember Ryan's Hope, what a great show!  Delia was hilarious!   ;)

Ryan's Hope reruns air on SoapNet.
I managed to tape most of Nancy Barrett's month long
stint from 1976.

Donna Wandrey was on for a week in '78, and Lela Swift was their director.
