Title: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on March 02, 2019, 10:22:51 PM
If you've noticed that the forum's time is off, that's because our host has done something to the time setting on the server the forum's system is stored on. I thought I'd adjusted for it, but then they did something else. But I suppose I'll get to the bottom of it sooner of later. But until then, who knows what time you're likely to see?  [snow_rolleyes]

That's good to know. Unfortunately, though, my time, which was fine when I went to bed last night, is now 7 hours ahead.  [snow_strange]

Just wait, MB, until daylight saving time hits!  Our forum might be off for seven years!

Actually, things look like they might be back to normal. I won't really know until 12am ET when most of the slideshows are scheduled to change...

What in heaven's name is going on now?!  [snow_strange]  I just noticed that most of the recent posts I made on the "Complete This Phrase / Fill In The Blank - 1841 Parallel Time" board have the correct time until they get to the last two! The 01:02:56pm ET post is correct, but then the next post I made regressed to 06:10:04am ET, followed by 06:14:01am ET. And what's even weirder is a post MagnusTrask just made a short while ago has the correct time of 01:36:15pm ET. The minutes and seconds appear to be correct, but intermittently the hours are fluctuating back and forth 7 hours!!

Is anyone else seeing this (or adjusted for your own time zone) on the BoardIndex page or the recent posts feature?!

Let's enjoy the ride!

I can't say I'm enjoying it because I have no idea what the hell is going on!!  [snow_mad]

Now I see that three of Uncle Roger's posts flashed-back. But then the time went back to normal for two posts he made afterward. And currently for me the forum says it's 11:34am ET!!

Uncle Roger just made a post with the correct time - but I'm still off by 7 hours.

It gets weirder and weirder...

Though we've always said the forum is haunted...

It's going to fascinating to see if the Robservations slideshows change at 7pm ET...

Forum time still good for me.

Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on March 04, 2019, 06:09:24 PM
That's beyond curious, dom - particularly when we're in the same time zone and the time settings in our profiles are exactly the same. But one thing I do know is that whatever the hell is going on, it's not just happening to me because I checked the database and the timestamps for the flashed-back posts have all been written into the database as 7 hours behind the time they were actually made, and I have no control over that. The database should and always has written timestamps as GMT.

Though all that being said, Uncle Roger is also in my time zone and while those three of his posts were off, as I said, his latest post has the correct time (on both the forum and in the database) while I was still 7 hours behind...

MB, I think you've stumbled upon a new DS plot for 2019.  Instead of PT (parallel time), there's TT (technology time).  Residents of Collinwood, when they turn on their computers or smartphones, start receiving messages, e-mails, texts and voice recordings out of time.

Have you tried unplugging your computer?  (Bad joke,  I know... )
Title: Re: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on March 05, 2019, 05:27:31 PM
There was a new development after midnight last night that was so unfathomable to me that I had to go to bed rather than even try to process it. While I was 7 hours behind on the forum while visiting it with my computer, for the fun of it I decided to check if I was also 7 hours behind using my phone. I wasn't - visiting with my phone had the correct time. I kept refreshing both the computer and the phone and the situation remained the same.  [snow_strange]

Now, logically that could make someone think that something about a computer and possibly even specifically my computer was at fault for the 7 hour difference and phones might be immune to whatever the problem is. But let's recall that Uncle Roger also had three flashed-back posts yesterday, so it's not just me. And what's even more significant than Uncle Roger having had them is that Uncle Roger doesn't post with a computer, he uses his phone. So much for any notion that it's only my computer and it doesn't happen with phones.  [snow_strange]

Thankfully, the time on both my phone and computer are fine so far today. But "so far" may be the operative words there. And even if things remain fine for me today, who's to say the problem won't pop up for someone else like it did for Uncle Roger yesterday...

Update: Now my computer AND my phone are off by 7 hours...
Title: Re: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on March 05, 2019, 12:12:50 PM
Here's another wrinkle to blow your mind. I just checked Who's online and the times for almost everyone who's here are all displaying correctly even though my time is off. And I say "almost" because there is one guest who, like me, is off by 7 hours, so at least I'm not alone in being flashed-back. But the main reason why the fact that most guests have the correct time should blow your mind is because the times for everyone else in Who's online should be filtered through my time, meaning, if my time is the hour of 1pm, I should see guest activity as some point during the hour of 1pm and the people on the West Coast, where it's now the hour of 10am should be seeing guest activity during the hour of 10am - but for me nearly all guests are showing correctly as the hour of 1pm even though my time is showing as the hour of 6am, through which I should be seeing them because my time is off.

This is all just mind boggling to me. Has the forum fallen down the rabbit hole with Alice?

Now my phone is fine - computer still 7 hours behind...

I think I need to go out to do some errands and just ignore all of this for a few hours...

Well, look what happened this morning - dom was flashed-back when he made a post in the "Safe and Secure" topic at 05:22:43am ET but it's listed as 10:22:43pm ET last night (which also happens to be earlier than the post that precedes it, the one I made at 11:18:00pm ET last night while my time was correct).
Uncle Roger and I welcome you to the club, dom!  [snow_smiley]

(And my time is still correct - let's see how long that lasts...)

Well, I see where it was Uncle Roger's turn to get flashed-back with starting his Marilyn Ross topic.

As you can tell from this post, my time is actually correct, which is a surprising change for this time of day because I've mostly been 7 hours off at this time.

Well, well - let's welcome another member of the flashed-back club! I see where a post on "Complete This Phrase / Fill In The Blank(s) - 1841 Parallel Time" that was made by MagnusTrask at 04:01:21pm ET was posted while he was flashed-back to 09:01:21am ET. This begs the questions: 1) Do you live in the Northeast, Magnus? 2) Do you live on the East Coast? or 3) Do you live in Central, Mountain, or Western time zones? Your profile seems to indicate you live somewhere in the Central Time Zone. But sometimes people don't have the time set correctly in their profiles, so I can't alsways rely on that. But if that is true, so much for my theory that only people on the East Coast are affected by whatever the hell is happening...

Now I see where Gothick has joined the club. He made a post at 11:28:41am ET that was flashed-back to 04:28:41am ET. And when it comes to Gothick, he's also a Northeasterner - though Magnus' flashed-back posts seem to have dispelled the East Coast/Northeast theory...

Here's another thing that's interesting. After I just discovered that I'm currently flashed-back on my computer, I went into the members' list just to see if anyone I clicked on might also be flashed-back and having clicked on at least thirty members, I discovered that everyone I clicked on was. So, apparently we can all be susceptible at times, which is the first thing that makes any sense. Though what doesn't make sense is when I checked with my phone, I wasn't flashed-back, nor were any of the members I'd previously checked in the members' list, though we all remained flashed-back on my computer...

 [pointing-up]  Could be!!  [snow_wink]

I continue to be totally fascinated when it comes to how I can be flashed-back on one device while I'm not on another device. Currently I'm flashed-back on my phone, but quite obviously I'm not here. The system should work identically on all devices at the same time - especially when it comes to the same account - but since the beginning of this month the same account can act completely differently on different devices...

The past few days I hadn't been paying attention so I missed that Midnite has joined the club. Her 12:12:13am (ET on the 21st, 09:12:13pm PT on the 20th) shows up as 05:12:13pm ET on the 20th - and her 12:26:26am (ET on the 21st, 09:26:26pm PT on the 20th) shows up as 05:26:26pm ET on the 20th.
Welcome aboard Flashed-back Time, Midnite!!  [easter_grin]

And I also noticed that yesterday I switched back and forth from normal time to flashed-back time and back to normal time in the same posting period. I went from 04:57:59pm ET to 10:19:45am ET to 05:22:33 ET while I was posting on the "Calendar Events / Announcements '19 I" board. It's the first time that's ever happened to me...

I think this "curse" is spreading to us cousins.  Let me tell you a story that happened a week ago.

To make sure I don't lose  or misplace them, I always place my house keys in my right, front pocket.  Always.  Always.  Always.  I don't deviate.  The only time they are removed is on Sunday when I do laundry.  They go into a kitchen drawer on a hook until they go into another pair of pants.  This hasn't changed in decades.  When I unlock my door, before I even open it, I put the keys back in my right, front pocket.

So, a week ago, I'm subbing and my keys are in my right front pocket all day long.  I get home and reach in for them and they're gone.  I turn out all the pockets I have, on my jeans and my coat.  Regarding the latter, I pull out my mittens and sunglasses and turn the lining inside out.  I check everything, including my lunch bag.  The keys are gone.  I got to my neighbors to use their cellphone (I don't have one - call me untrendy) and call a friend who has an extra set.  He shows up, drops them off and takes off.  The key doesn't work.  I call him again from my neighbors' cellphone and get his voicemail.  While I wait, my hands get cold.  I reach into my pockets for my mittens and there, on top of one are my keys.  I had pulled the mittens out earlier, as I said, and nothing else was in that pocket.  When I go back into my house I check my voicemails on my landline; no messages,  But when I check caller ID, during the time I was locked out of my house........I had called myself two times.

Explanations, anyone?

Gerard

Gerard, it's not unheard of for scammers to clone your own phone number to your caller id. It's happened to me a couple of times over the years. So, as long as you didn't leave yourself a message, I think things should be okay.
Title: Re: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Gerard on March 24, 2019, 12:12:35 AM
Several friends have told me about that scam, Uncle Roger, and told me not to pick up if I see me calling myself.  But that never happened before, only while I was locked out of my house while my keys vanished and then reappeared.  Like MB said, cue the Twilight Zone music.

Quick question, MB.  When do you update the OS as-aired-on-this-date-'66-'71 slideshow?  Where I live, it was always at 6:00 p.m. CST.  Now it seems to update at various times.  Is this a result of the curse, or do you update it now at a different time?

Title: Re: ** Forum Time **

It's always at the same time. But if when someone visits the forum they're experiencing flashed-back time, the captures they see are all wrong because the captures are still from the previous day's eps - and the captures probably don't match up with the captions because those have probably changed at the right real time. The whole situation can be a pain in the you know where.

What, MB, can we make to break this curse/  Can we pass on the shadow creature?  What?  The updating of the daily episodes does not appear at its normal time.  Those who control the internet are obviously evil.  We must deal with them.  Anyone knows who anyone who can do a painting?

What I still find crazy is that time can be normal on my computer but not on my phone or vice versa. As you can see from the timestamp on this post, I'm currently flashed-back on my computer, so when I go to Robservations I'm still seeing Willie and Sam from April 12th's Ep #207...

Not sure if this is what you've been talking about, as this would be more of a "flash forward"!  I just posted something at 1:21 a.m. (possibly 1:19 when the actual post went through) and I notice that it's listed as TODAY at 6:19 p.m.!!!!
Title: Re: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Josette on June 09, 2019, 11:27:14 PM
And the same thing just happened with my above post reporting it, and more than likely will happen to this one, too.  I presently have 1:27 AM Eastern.
Title: Re: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on June 10, 2019, 04:42:16 PM
I wasn't around at the time, so I can't know what happened. But given that the forum is currently showing your posts as having been made "yesterday," I would have to say that you were flashed-back. Plus the timestamp code in the database also shows that your three posts were made 7 hours before their actual time: at 06:19:41 PM on June 9th rather than 01:18:41AM on June 10, at 06:25:06 PM on June 9th rather than 01:25:061AM on June 10, and at 06:27:14 PM on June 9th rather than 01:27:14AM on June 10. And being stamped 7 hours before the actual time of a post is exactly how the weird flashed-back phenomenon has been working.
Title: Re: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Josette on June 11, 2019, 02:41:28 AM
The whole thing is very weird, but while they now show up as being posted 7 hours earlier than they were, the initial listing was 17 hours in the future, which was REALLY weird!!

There was a while there when the forum wasn't doing it and I hoped that perhaps it had passed. But flashed-back time has been back in full force the last few weeks - sometimes even lasting for hours for some members. Who knows?! I can't think of any reason why it should be happening...
Title: Re: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on August 11, 2019, 05:18:36 PM
I hadn't noticed any flashed-back posts since July 29. But just to be sure I just went through the database and it's true that there haven't been any. Can we believe that maybe the phenomenon is gone? Well, I've thought so in the past only to have it return. But maybe, just maybe, it has because this is the longest period of time it has gone without happening...
Title: Re: ** Forum Time **
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on March 08, 2020, 01:55:35 PM
The time is acting differently than it normally has with this host once we get to Daylight Savings Time. That could be because we're on a different server since switching to a new plan. Though I doubt that's it because things worked the same just yesterday when it was still Standard Time. So perhaps our host has done something differently. In the past the server we were hosted on was located in Arizona, which doesn't participate in DST. But perhaps this year the server's own time is set up differently for DST. I suppose we'll see. But if the forum's time is showing up correctly for everyone, I suppose I won't worry about it. For me it's showing up fine on both my PC and my phone...

Everything seems to be working correctly. Even the Robservations slideshows changed on time as they should have. I had some worries about that because of changes to support of the code that runs them (the computer language it's written in is a newer version on the new server we're on and it handles Daylight Savings Time differently) - but they worked...
