Title: Joel Crothers in EDGE OF NIGHT
Post by: Gothick on April 04, 2018, 02:12:53 AM
After I watched Marie--truly fabulous--in SOMERSET, youtube prompted me to watch this EDGE OF NIGHT blooper reel. Joel Crothers show up around the 2:20 mark, and there might be more of him on here.

According to the blurb, Michael Stroka plays a character named Quentin in this one. Director John Sedwick from DS was on board, too.

Stroka was the brother of the character Brandy Henderson, played by Designing Women favorite Dixie Carter.

[pointing-up]  Not only was his name Quentin but he was a psychiatrist, which came in handy when some sort of killer was seemingly always on the scene.

I loved Edge of Night since long before any of the DS stars were on it. Though I never got to see the last few years of it because both of the ABC affiliates in my area dropped it.  [snow_angry]  And unlike when the Boston affiliate dropped DS due to parents/church groups' pressure, none of the UHF stations decided to pick EoN up.  [snow_sad]

Robert Gerringer turns up towards the last days of Edge of Night, as Del Emerson. I don't remember if he had any scenes with Joel Crothers.

Joel mentions spending time chatting with Robert Gerringer in the Manhattan Shadows tape posted on Archive by the Doctor and K9.  I think he said Mr. Gerringer had no memory of their having worked together before.

Wow - and they played many scenes together on DS. I can't say I'd be too flattered if I'd done the same with him and he didn't remember me.

A fan on social media found this episode, which has a scene in which Joel and Donna Wandrey (who obviously did not overlap on DS) have an encounter. Date is 1980.

The same fan posted snapshots from Donna's recent appearance on LAW & ORDER: SVU, on May 2. I think it is a current TV show.

Donna looked great!

That was fun! I knew that Donna had appeared on Edge but i had no idea that she had worked with Joel. I'm a bit surprised that no one has brought this up at a festival.
Sharon Gabet is quite delicious as Raven. She is very active on Facebook and is very open to discussing her soap days with fans.
And it's just so bizarre to see Academy Award Winner Kim Hunter share scenes with pornstar Dennis Parker!

Uncle Roger, was Kim Hunter the "washed up actress" being interrogated by the police captain, who did indeed look a lot like a gay pornstar of the Seventies?

I don't think most fans care about this kind of thing any longer. Perhaps it was always a minority pursuit. I still get really excited whenever I find more scenes of Grayson on One Life to Live, and it was such a treat to see Humbert show up in another EDGE OF NIGHT episode.

That was Kim Hunter, Gothick. She was brought onto the show about a year earlier as an actress who was filming a grade Z horror movie called Mansion of the Damned. Another cast member of the movie was played by Farley Granger, who didn't stick around too long. I don't remember why her character had it in for Joel's character or for Deborah Saxon, played by future film star Frances Fisher but the part involved her masquerading as an elderly neighbor which required her to wear almost as much makeup as she did in Planet of the Apes.
Dennis Parker did quite a bit of porn in the 1970's. He may even have done some while he was doing Edge. Most of his porn work was done under the name Wade Nichols and is pretty easy to find on the internet. Most of it was gay but not at of it. Dennis' porn career wasn't unknown to his coworkers or the network. It wasn't unknown to certain members of the audience either.😉😉

That is fascinating, Uncle Roger.

Years ago, I loaned the DVD of DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS to a dear friend who is a few years older than myself. When he gave it back to me, he offered his opinion that Karlen could have done gay porn in the Seventies.

Here's an interesting article about Dennis Parker:

Kim Hunter is always a delight. I enjoyed seeing her in this.

Fascinating article, Gothick. Quite a time capsule of an era that most of us only heard about.

I'm glad that they used so many quotes from Sharon Gabet. Sharon is quite an interesting woman. She has a degree in nursing and is also a certified yoga instructor. She is pretty active on Facebook and has shared many hilarious stories about her soap days, especially regarding Lois Kibbee and Larkin Malloy. She speaks with great affection towards both Dennis and Joel.

I am glad you enjoyed the article. I have only read a bit of it. For anyone who cares (I doubt anyone other than you or I will look at it, but who knows), if you continue scrolling through the very long article, there are some Not Safe for the Workplace photos, mostly featuring naked Dennis Parker, who was a gorgeous man, but there's at least a little female nudity as well, I think.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about Sharon Gabet or the other actors you mentioned. The only soap operas I ever watched were DARK SHADOWS and STRANGE PARADISE. I'm on episode 165 of SP now, and have really been enjoying finally watching the last storyline which lasted the final 13 weeks of the show. I had seen most of it back in the 1990s thanks to a friend's kindness, but watched tapes out of order and in a rather spotty, undisciplined way.

Lois Kibbee was the niece of character actor Guy Kibbee. She did mostly theatre and soaps, though she appear in the movie Caddyshack. She has a slight connection to DS, in that she coauthored The Bennett Playbill. She had also worked with Joel on Somerset. Her character on Somerset was the mother of a character played by Christopher Pennock and was married to a character played by the actor who had played Bill Malloy.

The soap world is a small one and just a little bit incestuous.

I've always thought that the actor who played Mike Carr on EDGE appeared as an extra in the party scene in HODS.  At least it looks like him...

i used to love EON. it wasn't "supernatural" in any way but it had a darker, more sinister tone than other soaps.

like a lot of soaps in the late 70s/early 80s it got moved around and dropped by local "affiliates" making it harder and harder to find until it was eventually cancelled.

EON was one of my favorite soaps because I love a good mystery and EON had several over the years. I was really pissed when it was taken off in my area quite a while before it went off so I have no idea how the final few plots played or how things finally wrapped up.

MB, if you go to Sharon Rose Gabet's Facebook page, you'll find a lot of day by day postings regarding the last days of EON. Sharon and the late Larkin Malloy participated in the discussions. The show had changed headwriters and they were very frank about the stories being inferior to those that Henry Slesar came up with.
A few of the other actors chimed in as well. And there was fairly good behind the scenes dish as well.

I vaguely remember Lois being on during the Adam and Nicole storyline back in the Dark Shadows days...but I remember her more as Ted Knights wife in Caddyshack. She was a hoot.

Lois wrote for Edge of Night for a period. I believe that Slesar was the one who plotted long term story and Lois was one of several writers who turned out the daily scripts. She also wrote some scripts for the CBS soap Capitol when Slesar was the head writer there.
