When I first glanced at this post, I thought Midnight was getting a 19 episode order. Then I clicked the link and see it is for 9 episodes. Oh well, 9 is better than none, which is what I thought it was going to be when it took NBC so long to decide on renewal.

I thought 9 was a strange number of eps. If they wanted a limited order, you'd think that at least they would have ordered 10 like so many other shows get. But with so many other shows in their arsenal, maybe NBC only has room for 9 eps? [idontknow]
At least moving it from summer to their fall schedule shows that they have confidence in it...

Saw episode 1 of the new season and thought it was pretty good. They wrapped up a loose end from the first season and seamlessly introduced 2 new characters who purchased the town's hotel. After initial skepticism, they proved to be legit and we're accepted by the group. Unfortunately, the premiere butted heads with the world series and took a pretty bad licking in the ratings. While even Hawaii Five 0 slipped from its usual, Midnight's ratings were awful. Would hate to see the Dark Shadows NBC timeslot claim another victim.

Chances are the Live +7 number will be better. The networks rely on them more than they do the Fast Overnights.And I suspect that could be the reason why the Web site where I normally see the Overnights didn't even bother to share them for Friday...

It really is a shame that the NBC Dark Shadows time slot claimed another victim. The ratings were identical 8 weeks in a row. Normally that is a good thing - or a pretty good thing, but they were really awful. The hoped for +7 ratings boost didn't materialize. The only week of +7 I saw showed some increase- but so did every other non sports show increase by an equal or greater amount. About the only big 3 network show Midnight ended up beating was Alex Baldwin. I do give NBC some cudos for giving it a 2nd season shot - but it really belongs on cable such as HBO where it's sister show True Blood flourished. I do hope it gets shopped somewhere. As for the timing, Merry Christmas to you too NBC [santa_angry]

The fascinating thing is the move to 8pm seemed like a bad idea but the show has gotten much better ratings at 8 than it did at 9. Who would have thought? And the fact that the ratings have gone up can't be a bad thing when they approach other networks for a possible pickup...

No, while the total audience number fluctuated somewhat (apparantly there is a small audience range between each tenth of a point) the actual rating never budged. It was .4 for 8 straight weeks both at 8pm and 9pm. Really bad. Hawaii Five-0 was typically twice that.

True, the demo has remained the same, but last week viewership rose 26 percent from the last 9pm overnight numbers - and this week it rose 37% from the last 9pm overnight numbers. Yes, the networks tend to look at the demo as the more important number, but viewership does count for something. I mean, even the TVLine Web site pointed out that this week's viewership was the show's season high overnight audience thusfar...

Not to keep beating a dead horse...but to put it in perspective. If a baseball players batting average is .100 and he gets it up to .137, that's a 37% increase - but it still stinks. Had there been real sizeable audience increases, the demo would have moved to .5 or better. Also keep in mind, Season 1 average demo was .7 and even then, it barely got a renewal. Don't get me wrong, I really like Midnight Texas and would love to see a season 3 but the numbers were terrible no matter how much spin is put on it.

I guess my point is it's better for viewership to go up rather than down. I've noticed that several shows have been seeing a steady decrease in viewership in the past few weeks. However, Midnight, Texas has been among the few that has seen an increase, so from that overall perspective the increase is more significant than it otherwise might be. And not to put too fine a point on it, TV Line would have hardly used this week's increase in viewership as its headline for their Friday overnight ratings article if the increase was completely insignificant.
