Title: Julia, the sly minx *Spoilers, darlings*
Post by: Heather on November 07, 2004, 07:21:51 AM
Hiya,

Okay, so I was watching some DS tapes to cheer me up today... why yes, this is indeed a daily occurance.  ::)  Anyway --  I've been going through the series  again and I'm up to the point where Julia, "the historian" {wink wink} has invaded the Collins household. A couple of interesting tidbits I hadn't given notice before:

I get a kick out of the scenes between Julia and Dr. D-W 2  (Dave Woodard #2...whatever ;)).
One thing that my made brows raise earlier this week was a scene between the pair right after Julia had found out that Barn is a vampire. Dave is visiting his friend to chat about Julia's mind-tripping patient, Maggie. Of course, everyone at this point thinks that Dave and Julia know eachother from college, but not medical school. Snort. JUlia, of course, is fiercely determined to keep her real "research" a big secret, even if it means lying to her friend...goddess forbid anything should get in her way, ya know. ;) Anyhoo - Julia and D-W 2 are in the collinwood drawing room...he's threatening to take Maggie out of her care, and so Julia is doing her best to dissade him of such thoughts. She starts acting like her hunch about the Collinses and her research is amounting to nothing; that there's nothing to report because her leads have poofed into thin air. She acts despondent, but then all of a sudden Julia makes a show of sitting down in a chair, crossing her long legs towards D-W 2's surprised eyes. And then she gives him this sort of coy, innocent look. Dave gets up from his seat, stands behind her and says: "Are you sure you're telling me the truth....is this just another move to distract me?"
And of course my warped imagination started going off into parts unknown from that second on... LOL.

Another scene that had me cackling - well, not anyone else in my house, just me -
is when Julia comes over to the Old House after Hypnotizing Maggie (this was right after the young lady had escaped from Wyndcliffe - Barn. was threatening to kill Maggie right away, but Julia convinced him to let her handle the girl). BTW, one thing I...dislike about the early B&J eps. is the way Barnabas acts. Although if I start playing armchair psychologist, I end up wanting to give him a swift firm kick and a hug at the same time - lol. However, Julia's scenes are just wicked...in this one, she definitely has her evil woman wig on. She waltzes right into the house, confidently explaining that everything is under control...that they have to trust each other or else. In the middle of their back-and-forth repartee, she snaps open her purse, pulls out a sleek cigarette holder, inserts her favorite brand, and then lights it using Barn's candleabra (LOL). From that point on, visions of Pepe were dancing in my head... she just puffs away, leaving the house with a trail of smoke in her wake. One unintentionally funny line occurs when Julia remarks that if Barn. doesn't cooperate, "I'll expose you." Barn's expression is priceless. he just sort of looks down - at what I'm not certain (well, I know what *I* was thinking - but since this is a family board and all... cough), and then he turns away, defeated. Julia just grins and walks out of the house.
I love revisiting these episodes. Its a nice diversion from...other things (sigh)...and you find precious gems every time!!  >:D

p.s. I have some other smileys to share...aren't they cute? sniff.

Oh, I love both those scenes you mentioned.  JUlia's scenes with Woodard and her coy, deliciously sly way of throwing him off track are too savory and demand repeated play whenever they hit the screen in this household.  As for that scene in the OH living room,  I just about die when Julia lights her ciggie from one of Barn's precious candlelabras.  The looks on both their faces are to LIVE for.

And there's still more to come!  Enjoy!

best, Steve

Nope - actually, you could have included two more.  ;)

And probably needless to say I LOVE this one: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/rosebud22/Blow_Up_IE_by_eStunt.gif)

Look for quite a few of them to be added to the forum's smileys set as soon as I get the chance.  :)

As for the Julia scenes that you mention, I'm with Gothick, they're some of the best moments ever on the show and I never tire of watching them.

Love that wig...of course, stills, don't do it justice. I've mentioned in the past that there was a gal in San Francisco that I used to see at a particular lunch spot that resembled Grayson as she appears in this period of the show. I always thought it to be too coincidental that this woman would arbitrarily pick this look. Never had the nerve to approach her about it. What fun it was though staring at her and thinking, "Grayson 67".

Great captures, JC. Lighting the cigarette off the candle...What a hoot! That whole scene was fab & rad.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the pics!  Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a gown to pick out.

Now, my DSFMS (Dark Shadows Faulty Memory Syndrome) is kicking in, so while I do recall this little comment by Barnabas, I can't recall if it was from the series or from one of the novels.  He makes mention to Julia of how he is not enamored by the way women in the 20th century were "liberated" or "emancipated" or something like that.  Obviously, he was use to the "weaker sex" variety of the eighteenth century, especially when they knew-their-place so-to-speak with regards to men.  And here's this woman doctor, on equal par with her male counterparts, telling him on occasion in her own bedside manner to shove it.  And it's not bad enough that she engages in the vice of tobacco like a man would, but she doesn't even have the where-to-all to go to the appropriate smoking salon to indulge, and uses his candelabrum, which means something to him, as if it were a Bic.  All she needed to do send him into apoplexy was to walk up to a 200-year-old vase, once the favorite of his dear mother, and flick ashes into it.

There was an odd fan made video spoof of the Julia-Barnabas relationship at the convention this year.

It goes like this:As usual, Barnabas rejects Julia and she goes off to get drunk at the Blue Whale, while there, she overhears a conversation with Joe, Burke, and Maggie (an clip of a scene from an early Barnabas episode) where Joe mentions the loss of blood of one of his uncle's cows.  This gives Julia an idea and she rushes off to the farm with a cow suit mooing when Baranabas appears to strike at one of the cows.  Julia tries to convince him she is a cow but  Barnabas is too stunned just flies off . The farmer then arrives, thinking that she really is a cow.

One guy played all the parts!

I think that must've been in a novel cuz on the show he chides her a week or so later for being a pushy modern woman and if modern men like it. . they can have it. . .he's not gonna . .

Okay, so I was watching some tapes again....
I just saw the epi. where Julia and Dave W. were having a little conversation in the Collinwood study. This is right after Willie was shot (ya know, when Maggie and Sam set up a trap for the 'mysterious' kidnapper). First of all, why they had to shoot him **5** times in the back with a shotgun I'll never know...don't even start me on the topic of hunting - I'll go off-topic REAL fast (LOL).  Anyhoo...I love the look on Julia's face when Dr. W suggests that she's staying on at Collinwood because of an romantic interest in Seƒ±or Collins. I wonder if this is when it first came into Julia's mind as well...
I wish I had some pics to illustrate this but...sigh...only have these episodes on tape. No tengo dinero mis amigos...    :P

I dont quite know when it popped into Grayson's head (a bit before i'm certain) but that is a good place to take the ball and run. . .then the execs soon caught onto what she was doing--and DS history was written.  I do love that scene too, the way she holds out her hands over the stacks of books "Daaaave, I can't just pack up and go---"  Then when she sits in the chair, uneasily squirming as he makes his insinuation---the 'cat who swallowed the canary' look on his face is pretty priceless too. . like he finally figured out something about the mysterious, brilliant Dr. Hoffman--

Another funny thing I noticed (well, at least to me)
When David had a dream warning him about Barnabas, he sees a mysterious faceless figure dangling a shiny medallion. Julia's wig and her shiny accessories take center stage that day - lol.

And during a scene in the Old House Drawing Room, Barnabas walks in and spies Julia engrossed in a text of some sort. He yells about her reading at a time like this (this was when Willie is in the hospital, supposedly on his deathbed). Anyhoo, She responds by saying something to the effect of: "well, you enjoy browsing through family albums; and I enjoy browsing through medical journals." That line itself was funny, considering Barn's...attitude during this time, but what I found even more intriguing was what Julia was leafing through -- it was a book alright, but what KIND of book is my question.  ;) There was one shot...Oh, I wish I had a picture...where you could see a bit of what was inside. All I can say is there was some cropped pictures running along the top of the pages, followed by some text. Now, that could've been anything -in theory- but my mind naturally strays to something a bit more...risque. Was Julia doing some extra top secret research for her...treatment...of Barnabas? LOL   Actually, that reminds me of a story on another list....  :-X   ;D   >:D
I love revisiting these episodes.  :-*

Jean-Claude, querido mio, what fabulous photos.  The first one looks as if Julia was *thrilled* to discover a copy of Lady Chatterley's Lover in Liz's Library (thinking of what Heather wrote above).  "AND it's ILLUSTRATED!" Dave looks less than thrilled with ALL of it.

Lady Chatterley's Lover!  Does that ever bring back memories from when I was young.  I wanted to buy it at the dime store so badly and read it. It took me an hour to get up the nerve to finally take it up to the counter to pay for it fearing all along someone would say that I was underaged. All the girls at school were reading Lady Chatterley's Lover and Peyton Place and the more daring were reading James Joyce.  My mother would've killed me if she only knew.

Now I don't know if I'm remembering this correctly or not. I read so many magazine articles over the years about DS's and its cast. That some times it is hard to remember correctly exactly what you read... But looking at those screencaptures brought back this thought of something I read.

But to get to the point... If I remember correctly... Jonathan Frid was trying to stop smoking and Grayson Hall's cigarette smoking on the set drove him nuts.

Because in Claude North's second post of reply #5 on November 9 2004. In the second screencapture. Jonathan is coveting that cigarette.

I'm sure Julia was thinking why don't you look at me like that.

I have a vague memory from looking at Dark Shadows a long time ago, when a local tv station was airing it before Scifi channel did, that while in character, in one scene on the show, Grayson as Julia did ask Jonathan as Barnabas if he wanted a cigarette.

Does anyone else remember seeing that particular scene? It may have been in these particular scenes. But can't remember, but I'm certain that did happen.

Well we've all laughed gleefully remembering the first scenes between Barnabas and Julia where Julia smokes freely and often . .even once lighting up a cigratte (in a black holder) with a candle at the Old House--she bends forward lights it and starts smoking in front of Barnabas then walks out with a sly look on her face--i don't recall in that dialogue that she asked him if he wanted one--but i think not.. . :o   After Julia became a heroine on the show--they inferred that she smoked--showing full ash trays or dying cigarettes--she was shown smoking only once more during the Dream Curse when she couldn't sleep--gosh i have too much arcane Julia info in my head now. . thanks guys--that's what i get for hanging out here for 4 years--

Back to Julia the sly minx...

In the middle of trying not to go nuts as I juggled some projects...I was watching some DS eps. again, of course!   ::)  ;D

Sculpting some naughty figures from my rubber eraser, I slapped down my drawing board and popped in a tape {for all you non-artistic types...they have these kneadable rubber erasers that are reusable time and again. Consistency is in between oh...play-doh and puddy. You can shape it to whatever form is needed so... well...
No - if I post a pic some of you might go blind...LOL. It started out like Barnabas' cane but morphed into some sort of phallic form... I wonder what Julia would say about that. lol  >:D}    Sorry - its been a looooong holiday.   ;D

Anyway...a couple of interesting things popped up in another scene between Julia and Dave W. (well, now its DW #3).
Dave has just visited with the etherial Sarah and is on a virtual rampage to find out the truth about her and all the unfortunate happenings around Collinsport. Julia finds him in the Collinwood study and starts questioning him. Julia tries to discourage his search, wondering why he'd be concerned with a little 'girl that left the scene' years ago (Julia musta had her city girl cap on for that sentence - LOL). Dave insists that she's a ghost...etc...

And then Dave lists all the unusual events surrounding Sarah's appearances, and the people who claimed to have seen her. When he brings up Sam Evans, Julia looks at him and says (I'm really paraphrasing here): "Sam Evans is an ARTIST... a very impressionable person. He'd been through a lot of emotional trauma lately...and he drinks quite a bit. Some people see pink elephants, he sees GHOSTS."
LOL  That cracked me up!

Remember kids - never trust anything those *artistic* types hear or see...    ::) ;D
Ohhhhhh...another one: Julia and Barnabas are in the Old House Drawing room, discussing what they'll do with Dave Woodard's...curiosity. Before Julia leaves to tallk to Dave, Barnabas says: "You recently made the comment that Dr. Woodard was the most brilliant student at your medical school. Well, I think you were being generous. He's the second most brilliant--" And Julia, turned away from him, smiles shyly and says: "Well, they never took me as seriously as they should have, because I'm a woman."  And he chimes in: "But that can be a mixed blessing, can't it my dear?"
Barnabas you evil, wicked flirt you...   ;)

If no one can verify it happened. Who knows I might have dreamed it.

But that thought of Julia asking Barnabas if he wanted a cigarette is just stuck as a vague memory in my head for some strange reason.

I remember it. I can't swear it was Barnabas she asked though.
