Title: Most Valuble Item?
Post by: Ricky101 on February 03, 2004, 01:02:09 AM
What's the most valuble DS collectible or item you own?
Mine are my DVDs.

That's easy.....my lock of Barnabas "Jonathan Frid" Collins hair.  I have it framed and it's hanging on my kitchen wall.

Besides the dvd's and a few assorted videos, I have Jonathan Frid's autograph from the DS Fan Club I joined back in '68 or '69. There was also a 45 rpm record from JF as part of the fan club. I still have that.  I used to have the complete DS bubblegum card set, the one with DS scenes on one side and a slice of a giant Barnabas puzzle on the back. I believe it was from the bubblegum wrappers that I sent off for an imitation Barnabas ring. I saw that ring somewhere in the house not too many years ago, along with a few of those bubblegum cards. I still have a Dancing Lady knife like Aristede had (I think I sent off for that from a  Johnson-Smith catalogue, anyone recall those?). I don't recall if the catalogue actually mentioned DS when it was selling those knives. I either lost, sold, gave away or tossed out a lot of DS items, especially DS related magazines and the Marilyn Ross novels. To think I once thought DS would be forgotten for all time.
What was I thinking?!?!

Hmm....
I don't really own any "collectibles" so to speak - used to have a bunch of stuff (including Frid's autograph), but it's long gone.  Only thing that seems to have survived is the DS record album.  lol
My most treasured items that I guess would qualify as DS-related are my autographed copies of David Selby's two poetry books.  But since they're inscribed to me, they wouldn't be of value to anyone else.

 ;D

PS  TERRY -- how on earth did you end up with a lock of JF's hair????   :o

Well, of collectibles, I have quite a few of the Marilyn Ross novels, the Dark Shadows game (the fangs are the only missing items), the original soundtrack album, the 45 of Quentin's theme, the adds for both movies clipped out of the local paper, and some of the comic books.  Of course, now I have many of the newer items, like the CD soundtracks and the various Pomegranate books.  Of more contemporary value, I have the autographs I collected from several of the stars (including and especially TLATKLS!) whilst I spend a few hours at the last festival, and the reissue of Josette's Music Box (the container also autographed by TLATKLS!).

My most cherished DS related collectable would be the autographed 8X10 photo of Joan Bennett my friend Jay gave to me several years ago. I never had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Bennett, so it is very special to me.

Craig Slocum's DS scripts, one has his name penciled on it.

The only DS related "things" I ever owned were a handful of the paperbacks, and a "Barnabas" ring....none of which I still have, and none of which I miss in the least.

The one thing I DO treasure.....the memory of a  :-* on the cheek from John Karlen outside a theatre door....and that will always be with me.  ;)

That would be my signed and numbered limited edition self-portrait of Diana Millay who apparently believes that she resembles a Barbie doll.

Oops. Sorry. I thought you were asking about my most laughable DS item.  >:D

My most valuable items are probably the drawings of DS characters I've done and had the stars autograph.

Connie, about 15 years ago my cousin and I were going to Maine to see Stephen Kings mansion, and we stopped in NYC to stay with my cousin friend overnight.  While there we were looking at her "stuff" and there was Jonathan Frids hair.  "Oh yeah" she said "He gave his hair to a few people, I was one of them."  I was flabergasted(?)  "Do you want it?"  Being no fool, I said yes.  The rest is history and on my kitchen wall.

 ;D Great topic!
I'm an avid collector of DS and classic horror film memorabilia. Sometime I'll have to post a pic of my "Forry Ackerman" basement ,[frankie]
I painted the walls stone grey to resemble the Old House basement.
DS wise, my most "valuable" items would probably be
1.) The cards-I have a complete set of the original pink cards, the green cards, the recent orange cards, and the color photo cards, although I lack the signed Dan Curtis card, I do have the signed Selby, KLS, and Roger Davis cards.
2.) I have about a 1/3 of the Gold Key Dark Shadows comics, including a # 1.
3.) My wife has a complete set of the old paperbacks, including the cookbook and all the novels. [read]
4.) I have the original one sheet (standard theatre size)
posters for HODS and NODS, (style 1 on each). I paid about $75 for HODS about 10 years ago and I've seen it go up a lot since then. I have the complete lobby card set for HODS and most for NODS. I hope to complete that set one day.
5.) Most valubale to me personally is a 1968 cast photo, the one they are standing on the stairs in, signed by John Karlen, KLS, Nancy Barrett, Lara Parker, Jonathan Frid and Louis. (Bless his soul). I wouldn't part with it for anything, although I'd keep missing Robert Rodan at shows and wish i could get him to sign it as well.
Sincerely, no bragging, I'm just proud of what I've collected.
PS One day, I plan on adding a skeleton in Trask like clothes in a unused closet, and put something that resemebles a partially bricked up wall in front.   ;)

Terry,  [wave]

I wonder how he came to be giving his hair to people.  lol
Do you have a picture of this framed masterpiece???  We'd REALLY like to see what JF's hair looks like framed and on someone's wall!

Ya know, if I were to frame anything even remotely related to David Selby and put it on the kitchen wall, I'd be served with papers within the week.

Hey!!!!!!   [ideay]

Currently i have 163 of the Marilyn Ross novels with 2 of the paperback box's,  (i started collecting DS in 1976). when the novels could be found and bought for 25 cents each.  I used to buy and sell on the DS collectiable classifieds (DSCC).  the rarest DS items i have are the Angelique ghost doll from NODS,  30+ of the sunday comic strips from Los Angeles and the Barnabas Collins glow in the dark poster by western publishing.

Mine is Josette's music box & theme that I just purchased at last year's recent festival.

That's quite an impressive collection you got there Coteriemc.  Must have taken you years to collect all of this.  I never even realized that they had Sunday comic strips of DS.   Very nice!

Me too! Prior to the advent of the internet, Sue Ellen Wilson's DSCC was a great venue to buy & sell DS Collectibles, as well as meet new DS friends. Those were great times  :)

I think mine would be the costumes my mom(not a DS fan at all!) made for me.  It was the only way I could get her to even come close to watching the show with me.  And the costumes she made always looked just like the ones on the show.

Hello Cassandra, yes it has taken me a long time to aquire my collection, i regret letting some of it go like a couple of original scripts and my josettes music box (which did not have it's lid). i guess there was a big warehouse find on the music box's back in early 1990's, all without lids!!!. Gary over at shadowland in PA made duplicates for 15.00. so if you have the original 1970 box. hold on to it. MPI is re-releasing the box on feb 17, supposedly...they keep pushing back the date.  -robert

Hello Crazyjenny & Bobubas, now thats a name i remember...sue ellen wilson, do you keep in touch with her?  if so, how is she doing?  i think i still have some of her old "for sale" newsletters around here and i know i have a DS collectors guide up-date that she and craig hamrick put out back in 92. it's like 18 pages long and came  stapled together.  look forward to talking more with you about the "old" times. -robert

I highly value most of my DS items. The Ross novels are a sentimental fave because of my memories of collecting them during my youth. I don't think I've read more than one or two. The same (sentimental appeal) applies to the few 16 magazines I have featuring the "DS Gang", as they were sometimes noted on the cover. I love my DS books printed by Pom. Press (KLS's publishing co.). I buy books for the pictures (I'm not a reader by any stretch of the imagination) so the DS PP books are priceless to me personally. The original vinyl DS lp is also a prized possession. I (think I) have all the DS music CDs as well, and really treasure them.

The DS collectable that is the biggest part of my daily life is my one DS pink bordered trading card. It is of a shot taken during my fave part of the series and features two of my all-time favorite characters. I had it laminated and carry it in my wallet.

It was given to me by a fellow DS fan at the Vegas Fest. This was the Fest that introduced me (flesh and blood) to my core group of DS pals who have become dear personal friends. Besides that fabulous memory, viewing the card also brings back that "rush" I got as a kid with anything DS. Every time I open my wallet I take a peek at it and smile. Sometimes that comes in very handy, particularly during the course of a long hard crummy day.

Of course I treasure my set of MPI tapes. My faves being the "Collector's Series", which features the pre-Barn episodes. If I could only keep one DS collectable, it would be the collector's Series, hands down. These volumes I will take to the grave. I eagerly await their release to DVD.

I have a few other items but they don't mean that much to me, though I am more than thrilled to own them.

dom

Dom,  same as you,  when it comes to the paperback books,  hands down they are my favorite.  dosen't matter if the covers are torn, worn or water damaged, i'd never part with them.  (http://www.military.com/UserImages/118354)  by the way, though it's not laminated,  i do carry a picture of Angelique in my wallet.  i heard that was a very cool DS  festival held at the MGM Grand. i stay there often when visiting relatives.

[shockeyes]  <=== Man with View Master

Hey, one of the very coolest  8)  DS collectibles ever were the View Master reels, issued from 3-D pictures taken during the Adam storyline. I got mine in either an Easter basket or Christmas stocking in 1969. They run anywhere from $50 to $100 depending on the dealer. Great depth in the pictures. You will see Barnabas, Maggie, Adam, Eve, Nicholas, Roger, Liz, Peter Bradford, Joe and more. Great shots of Collinwood with that "Wax Museum" atmosphere. The reel still work on the current viewers.

I guess my favourite item is one of the original studio plans (from an early 1897 episode), which I have framed above my desk.  I bought it in one of the festival charity auctions and it always makes me smile, having a little piece of DS hanging on the wall.

Elsewhere, I have a car license plate from the 1991 series, along with one of Barbara Steele's Julia blouses, which hangs in my wardrobe, probably to the alarm of any prying eyes ;)

Well, all that really matters is, does it FIT you well.   ;D

Can you imagine having one of Grayson's blouses she wore on the show??   :o
Ah....there was a time when I would have been able to fit into one of her blouses.  Those days are long gone.   :P

Well. . .i have things that i cherish. .my Julia t-shirts (- the best one, er. the Carlotta t-shirt, i'm sure my Mom stole it), my Grayson Hall mousepad with a scan of her autographed photo on the couch with her dog, Thing -- but the most personal item, i guess is the post card which i showed elsewhere here the other day, the Peter Turgeon oil painting.  He painted the silly picture and then sent this postcard to his cousin, Mimi.. .my friend who gave it to me when she discovered via IMDB just a few months ago that Peter (Bunny) worked with Grayson on DS. . .so i have this memorabilia of the least favorite-and destined to die Dr. Woodard:

I love that postcard, Julia99.  It is an illustration of the Great Eastern, a mammoth ocean liner constructed by Isambard Brunel in 1859.  (I'm a real maritime fanatic, both as historian and collector.)  Almost 700 feet long, powered by sails, enormous paddle-wheels and a propellor, she was originally designed to carry 5,000 First and Second Class passengers in very opulent accommodations (sofas in the staterooms were convertible to bathtubs!) from England to India, her size allowing for so much coal to be carried in her bunkers that she needed to stop only once along the way.  She never made one trip to India, instead being used to ferry passengers across the Atlantic.  Despite her size and luxury, incredible for the 1860's, she was a failure; very few would sail in her, ironically intimidated by her grandeur.  One passenger who appreciated her was Jules Verne, who wrote several stories concerning a massive ship based on the Great Eastern.  After several seasons of money-losing passenger crossings, she was withdrawn from service, her magnificent interiors removed and replaced by holds filled with the first transatlantic cable to connect the two continents telegraphically.  She was then eventually scrapped and forgotten, a ship a half-century ahead of her time.

MOST VALUABLE ITEMS - in reality:
1. My JULIA HOFFMAN coffee mug & T-shirts
2. My DON BRISCOE mouse pad
3. My Milton Bradley DARK SHADOWS GAME from '69 (everything's there but the original fangs, darn it)
