Title: Who Watches Orig. Series....
Post by: Patti Feinberg on April 24, 2013, 01:02:57 AM
My daughter, who has a lap-top, subscribes to NetFlix.
I asked her if one could watch the original DS series; she checked.
It looks like it starts at ep. 160. It's in ?4? part installments and when I had her put the mouse near each listing, it didn't look like it was necessarily in chronological order.
Does anyone watch the original series via NetFlix?

Thanks,

Patti

Ep. 160 is earlier than when I started (very occasionally) watching. They began with the arrival of Barnabas, which is somewhat later. Sounds like you've got the Phoenix story too. I don't know how far they go up to, though.

Thankfully, I do not watch via Netflix.  I actually haven't watched the show regularly in a very long time. I have all the discs and I tell myself that when I retire, I will finally watch the whole thing from episode one to the end (which I never have done, ever).  This of course is presuming that the discs will play on whatever is available to the typical citizen by the time I retire (if THAT ever happens).

Episode 160 could mean the *actual* 160, or 160 counting forward from Barn's release (which was really episode 207? somewhere around there).  But I don't think anyone now is using the old "let's count Barn's release as episode 1" numbering system.

Actually, Steve, when I saw *ep 160*, I assumed they were in fact doing the "Lets Pretend DS didn't start BEFORE Barn..."
(Just another case of FDSMS or whatever we used to call it!!)

Yup, Patti, it's called that:  FDSMS (Faulty Dark Shadows Memory Syndrome).  I think I might've been the one to coin the phrase!  But I'm not sure.  I've had plenty of that.  For years, after watching the original, I thought the Quentin-haunting story happened because the spook who prowled Collinwood in early '69 was not actually Quentin, but Quentin's "body" possessed by Petofi.

If I remember the postings around here correctly, Netflix used to carry the entire DVD collection but then suddenly cut back for some unknown reason.  :-\  And more than a year ago a group of fans tried starting a Facebook campaign to get them to restock the entire series again. But considering the info Patti is sharing with us, apparently that went nowhere.

Given the tons of DVDs Netflix stocks, one can't imagine that cutting back less than 100 discs can really save them much space, so who knows what the reason is?  [idontknow]

Netflix has 160 eps starting with 210 and ending in the first week of 1795, essentially all of early Barnabas.

Hi MB, I almost wonder if DS was a victim of its own success on Netflix.  There were a lot of reports of the discs breaking--this was back before streaming became as common as it is now.  I think if they want to stream they have to go through WorldVision and the cost of their rates are up the wazoo.

I think in general Netflix doesn't work all that well with cult TV shows.  I don't know how it is with Star Trek--from what I understand, those are being streamed all over the place now, though.
