The new year is going to bring with it a whole new version of SMF, the forum's system. We've mentioned a few times that we're still using SMF 1.1 but that SMF 2.0 has been released. Well, the time is finally coming when we're going to upgrade. And hopefully, if our host cooperates and we don't experience any downtime at that time, I'm planning to do the upgrade in the wee hours of January 1st.
I did a test upgrade with a copy of the forum on my own computer, and things went very smoothly. But that doesn't necessarily translate on the real forum because our host has slightly different server and MySQL software. However, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there won't be any problems.
Once the upgrade is complete, you'll notice several changes, including drop-down choices for many of the buttons in the main menu. But all of those types of changes are designed to make navigation of the forum easier.
Another change will be that the forum will have a new theme. The look will resemble the Midnight Storm Theme that we'd been using for the past few years, but there will be differences here and there - and you'll see that once it gets put in place and as I continue to tweak it once it's in place. For example, one of the planned changes will be random backgrounds rather than the static background we have been using of late featuring various characters from the original and '91 shows...

"Upgrades" usually make it harder for someone using "accessibility options" (for people with eye problems) to read or post. I hope that doesn't happen here. They often involve features requiring more memory than my computer has too, especially if movement is involved.

I don't think there should be any problems for you, Magnus. And there won't be any movement involved like things requiring Flash player, so there won't be anything requiring more memory. [santa_smiley]

I am at the point now where I have a knee-jerk reaction to "oh, ANOTHER upgrade???" particularly since some developers seem to roll them out every two to three months now.

The jump from SMF 1.1 to 2.0 is actually a major upgrade. The majority of changes won't be noticeable because they're internal. However, things like the drop-down windows in the main menu and how different areas of the forum look/are organized, particularly places like members' profiles, will definitely be noticeable. But I'm sure we'll all get used to everything before too long.
The forum's Help section will definitely be our friend. [santa_wink]

Well, this isn't the way the forum will look - this theme is temporary while I continue to tweak the new theme. However, many features are available in this temporary theme, so it won't hurt for anyone to look around. [santa_wink]

This new version of Midnight Storm is by no means complete - but it is at a point where at least it can debut. You'll notice a couple of spots where red shows up where it shouldn't be, and there's a light gray background in a few spots that makes things hard to read. Also, there are a few things that I think I'd like to see darker and a few others I'd like to see lighter. But all that will be be fixed after I get some sleep.
Also, the current random backgrounds are simply in place so that the random background feature will have something to work with until I have the chance to make the actual backgrounds. And currently there's a no background setting, so that's why the background will be blank from time to time until I change that.
And fear not, the various slideshows will return. But I need to rewrite the PHP routines to display them because the old routines worked with SMF 1.1 but not with SMF 2.0.
And finally, the spoiler feature will also return...
But for now, I'm off to take a nap. [8371]

Something strange for those with Accessibility Options on... the text is all squeezed into a narrow column on the right side, and everyone's profile information in each post is expanded to take up 2/3 of the screen! So far I doubt this will be a problem. A positive in all this seems to be that all the text seems to be all visible at once now, without moving back and forth across the screen...

As you've no doubt noticed, there have been a few more cosmetic changes (to places like the MessageIndex page for the boards (the topic titles and other info should be easier to read) and the Recent Posts listing (no more light gray background [santa_wink])). Plenty more to come. But one thing that I did want to point out is that you may have noticed that when you're posting a message and/or sending a PM, the textarea for typing no longer has a scroll bar. And the reason for that is that SMF, in their infinite wisdom, has removed scrolling in favor of a re-sizable textarea. If what you're typing starts to disappear, simply grab the bottom of the window and pull it down.

A few more cosmetic changes have been made - but the big change is that we have a spoiler feature again. It's different than our previous spoiler feature in SMF 1.1, though the way to read spoilers is pretty much self explanatory.
The button to look for in the BBC Code icons is this: (http://www.dsboards.com//SMF/Themes/midnight_storm_2/images/bbc/spoiler.gif)
And it's also possible to make a custom title for the spoiler. For example, coding a spoiler like this:
[spoiler=Example spoiler]spoiler text goes here.[/spoiler]
will look like this:
[spoiler=Example spoiler]spoiler text goes here.[/spoiler]
Truthfully, I don't really know why/when it would be necessary to use a custom title for a spoiler. But hey, whoever wrote the mod probably figured it might simply be a fun thing to include.
Also, the background of the Help section is no longer light gray, so the links to the various sections are now easy to see and click on should the need to do so arise.

I like the idea of a custom title for a spoiler. One could put in the spoiler title the storyline that's being mentioned, so the reader would have a better idea of whether or not he or she would want to look.

Well, as can be seen by the return of the Movies Quotes Slideshow to the BoardIndex page, I finally figured out how to rewrite one of the slideshow routines for SMF 2.0. And now that I have, hopefully the returns of the other slideshows won't be far behind. [santa_wink]

The slideshows are all back. And as you may have also noticed the Movies Quotes Slideshow and the '91 DS Series Slideshow have switched places, with the Movies Quotes Slideshow returning to the BoardIndex in anticipation of both films being released on DVD/Blu-ray later this year, and with the '91 DS Series Slideshow moving atop the Current Talk board because, well, seeing it only once is simply not enough. [santa_wink] (The only thing different is that the "Happy 20th Anniversary Year!" graphic is gone because it's no longer that show's 20th Anniversary year.)
Hopefully next January we'll introduce a Depp/DS Film Quotes Slideshow on the BoardIndex. But that's a year away, so let's not get ahead of ourselves. [santa_grin]

It has been work - but it's been fun, too. [santa_smiley] And as Midnite knows (because I've been giving her an earful (or should that be eyeful, as in reading rather than hearing) as getting everything up to speed has progressed), I'm learning all sorts of new things along the way. Things with PHP scripting and Web design that I never knew were even possible to do before this upgrade. So, who knows what I may do with all that new knowledge?! [santa_evil]

As you have probably noticed, the new random backgrounds are in place. And also, the forum now has random logos. The random logo feature, like the random backgrounds, has a blank option, so that's why from time to time the header will simply say "Dark Shadows Forums" rather than display a logo image.
More on all this tomorrow. But for now I'm quitting work on the system because I haven't even eaten dinner yet. [eat]

Hmmm, at first I found this very odd because I'd checked every way I could think of and everything was working fine. I even switched the buttons on my mouse so that the right button was primary and the left was secondary (which would be the way a left-handed person might set up their mouse) and everything still worked. But then it hit me - and it really should have hit me right away - I wondered if it was an Internet Explorer thing? So, I switched over from Linux to Windows 7, opened the forum with IE, and sure enough, all the BBC and Smileys buttons don't work (though in IE9 I'm not getting the copyright warning). So, I checked several other browsers and, of course, IE is the only one where it's happening. But then, I've made no secret that I think IE is a piece of, well, you know what, so it doesn't surprise me. [Blow_Up_IE]
The really odd thing to me is that this wasn't an issue with IE back when we were using SMF 1.1, so I don't know what it is about 2.0 that's causing it because the exact same Java Script copyright routine that we used in 1.1 is what's now in 2.0. But obviously there's some issue - and I'll try to get to the bottom of it...

I haven't gotten to the bottom of what's going on with IE and the BBC/Smileys buttons on the post form - but I have discovered something that makes the situation even stranger: all the smileys on the popup window (when you click the "more" link) DO work in IE. Apparently whatever is going on has to do specifically with the posting page and/or the BBC/Smileys routine on the posting page because otherwise the smileys on the popup window wouldn't work either.

Don't ask me how I did it, but the problem with the BBC/Smileys buttons and IE seems to be fixed. I mean I know what I did - but I have no idea why what I did fixed the problem. But then, I have no idea what caused the problem in the first place, so...

I am LOVING the aspect of the theme that includes screen captures from various episodes of the original series that ran during January. Love the shot of Grayson flipping out, and Liz clutching that deliciously tacky shopping bag where she's packin' that pistol agonizing whether or not to shoot Julia.

Excellent eye, Gothick. [snow_smiley] I was wondering if anyone would realize that all the captures in that background are from eps that originally ran in January of the various years DS was on. Actually, I picked two captures from each year and tried to get as many different actors in as possible within the limitations of what would show up well as part of the background.

I meant to get into all this on Saturday - but IE decided to have a problem with the BBC/Smileys buttons, so my explanation was delayed until today.
As Gothick has already surmised, the original series background is made up of captures taken from eps that originally ran in January. However, all the backgrounds are January themed in one way or another. The original movies background is made up of January captures taken from the Movies Quotes Slideshow, the '91 series background is made up of January captures taken from the '91 DS Series Slideshow, and the original series background is specifically made up of captures taken from both the 1990 Calendar Of Quotes Slideshow and what I like to think of as the This Date In DS History Slideshow (though we've never called it that). And, yes - each month there will be a new background in each category. But for now, here are the three current backgrounds:

It is always a delight to see your screenshots showing how these appear on your own computer. I can only get part of the "marginalia" as I could the side-strips to show on both my office and home computers. I know if I changed the settings I could make it work but I don't have the patience to fuss with the settings...

Blue is my favorite color. well that & Black, it's a bit of a tie really. but it still looks good. some of the sites i belong to when they do their upgrades the systems & the look pretty much look the same. which isn't how any site should look. i love how this isn't like that at all. great job.

I miss my profile page the way it used to be. [snow_cry] Will it ever come back? [snow_huh] I like the post times graph and I especially like being able to see all of my posts in one place. My profile page only shows a page where I can modify my profile. I can't see my profile page the way other members see it. [snow_undecided] Is it just on my computer or is everyone seeing their profile page this way? [snow_huh]

I was going to modify my last post, but I waited too long. I meant to say I miss the "statistics page" instead of "the graph page with my post times". All I see is a page where I can modify my profile. The other pages don't appear there. Is there a problem with it that will be fixed? I miss my old profile pages! [snow_cry]

All of that stuff is still easily available:
With the new display layout, look down at the bottom of the light gray box on the left which shows your username, avatar, etc. and click on the "Show Posts" link to see all your posts - and click on the "Show Stats" link to see your general stats, the posting activity by time" bar graph, and the most popular boards by posts and activity lists.
However the old display and the old way of accessing everything is still also available. If you click on the two arrow heads to the far right of the Profile Info/Modify Profile/Actions drop-down menus, everything will go back to the way it was in SMF 1.1. And this is true wherever you see those two arrow heads to the far right of any of the drop-down menus. [snow_smiley]

There are NO "Show Posts" and "Show Stats" links on my Profile Page. I don't have a "light gray box", it's a "blue box". All the links that I can click on are under "Modify Profile". They are: "Account Settings", "Forum Profile", "Look and Layout", "Notifications", "Personal Messaging", and "Buddies/Ignore List". (Of course, there is also another place I can click on, under "Actions" to "Delete this account" but I don't want to do that.) [snow_wink] There must be something wrong with my Profile Page. It seems to be "stuck" on the "Modify Profile" page. My regular Profile Page doesn't come up. Is there something you can do to fix it? I hope so...

At first I was very confused because Midnite and I can see your summary page when we go to your profile and we can also see our own summary pages when we go to our own profiles. But then it struck me that sometimes we can see things that regular members can't. I couldn't imagine why SMF would have created a new permission to allow or disallow members from seeing their own summary pages - but I was wrong because sure enough, when I just went to check the permissions for regular members, there is indeed a new permission in SMF 2.0 exactly like that. [snow_undecided] However, I've now set it so that everyone should be able to see their summary pages. [snow_smiley] And I'm sorry that checking permissions didn't occur to me earlier. Though who knows why a permission like that even needs setting in the first place?

Another photo theme for Jan.?? I am intrigued!
It wasn't really just for January because what I was alluding to is the forum logo/background for the Depp/DS film. Back then I was working on the forum logo, and I liked how it was turning out, but I was simply taking the fonts from the sign on Frid's dressing room door, the wrap party ticket, and the film crews' hoodies. They certainly make it seem as if the same fonts that were used for the original show will be used for the film - but once they began developing the posters (which one can only hope they are doing) who knows if that's what they'll go with or decide to go in a different direction. And I was also hoping to possibly get a better image of Collinwood to work with (rather than the fan photos which only provide the limited view of the outdoor set) and to possibly also get some screen captures from a trailer for the background. But as no poster/trailer has been forthcoming and probably won't be for possibly close to a month or more, I decided to give up waiting and to work with what we do have. After all, no one says I can't do another forum logo/background for the film somewhere down the road. [snow_wink]

It's actually possible to adjust a browser's display by using the CTRL key with either the + key or the - key. And the best thing is that it doesn't affect the way your browser displays any other Web sites that you might visit.

As I'm sure you've noticed, October has brought with it a Halloween Theme for the forum. And this year we have a new theme for Halloween because our old theme only worked with SMF 1.1 and we're now using SMF 2.0. And I can't take too much credit for the new version because I simply downloaded an exiting theme from SMF's Web site and made slight modifications (making a different logo, adding the DS slideshows, tweaking a few colors, etc.) to make it more DS friendly. Though perhaps when I get more time I might make a few more changes. [hall2_wink]
And anyone missing the Midnight Storm Theme need not fear that they're missing any October backgrounds for the original series, movies, or the the '91 DS because I won't be making any this year. In fact, anyone who might switch back to that theme (and you know who you are [hall2_wink]) will discover that the only background/logo that comes up is the one for the DS film in honor of the release of the DVD/Blu-ray this month. Well, unless their browser doesn't cooperate and they don't clear out their browsers cache - in which case they'll continue to see the outdated backgrounds for September. [hall2_grin]

I am just now noticing at the bottom of the "page" (I really don't know what else to call it). there are four links that read, respectively, "Home," "Button One," "Button Two," "Button Three."
I'm sure the significance of these was explained somewhere, but I missed it.
Do I dare to click any of them? What if one activates the dreaded "Forty Ninth Hexagram" application and I suddenly find myself in 1795 having tea with Reverend Trask????

I'm also guessing that the person who originally put together the Halloween Theme added those buttons so that knowledgeable admins could customize them. But I've never gotten around to doing that, and the only thing all three currently do is send one back to the forum's Home page, just like the extra Home link does. [hall2_smiley]

Sadly Halloween has disappeared into the mists for another year and with it the new Halloween Theme, so the forum has returned to the Midnight Storm Theme. And members will no doubt note that the only background and logo coming up is still just for the Depp/DS film. That's because I haven't had the chance to make new backgrounds for November for the original series, the original film (NoDS), and the '91 DS - but hopefully I'll get to that tomorrow. Yes, I love that scene, too - as well as the one between Julia and Nicholas from 1968. And, of course, how could I not include the infamous "Gloria" Winters blooper?! [hall2_grin]
And the NoDS background includes two of my absolute favorite Carlotta scenes. [hall2_wink]
(No matter how many times I see NoDS, I can never get over of the gall Carlotta displays when she tells Tracy that perhaps she doesn't belong. But that's a discussion for a NoDS topic...)

MB, if I'm remembering that Carlotta scene correctly, at the beginning of it Carlotta has just come in with fresh flowers for the vase in front of Angelique's portrait. That's a subtle touch that I love.
Perhaps Olivia can be glimpsed next month in the scene where Julia recalls having seen Olivia on stage in NYC, and we ponder the irony of such a poised actress as Grayson Hall feeding a line like that to "Olivia Corey." (but I'm not bitter)
The Carolyn/Burke shot is fab, too...

However, more than likely the font being used is off because none of us remember what the actual font used in the pilot's credits is. To clear the Firefox cache, bring up the Options menu, click on "Advanced," then click on "Network," and then in the "Cached Web Content" section click on the "Clear Now" button on the right.
To clear the Internet Explorer cache, bring up the Internet Options menu, on the "General" tab go down to "Browsing history" and click the "Delete..." button (don't worry because this won't actually delete anything yet), once the next page comes up be sure to uncheck the box next to anything you might not want to delete (like Passwords, History, Cookies, etc.) but make sure the "Temporary Internet files and website files" box is checked, and then click the "Delete" button on that page.
I'd have to look up how to clear the cache in other browsers like Google Chrome, Safari, etc. But I hope this helps. [ghost_smiley]

The original series' background for February includes Laura and David sitting at the fireplace (that is from Ep #162, which was originally shown on February 7, 1967) So, you're a month behind... [snow_sad]

There are other video clips on the Internet of Alec from The Principles of Lust as well as some of his other films. Honestly, I don't recall where they are now - but I'm sure with the right search terms they'll also come up on Google. And most were made around the time of the '04 pilot, give or take a few years...
I don't know if he's done anything nude lately because I don't pay as much attention to his film career as I might because so many of his film aren't even released in the US. Though in the past several years I do know that he's done loads of theater and TV, so I don't know if he's even had the time to do any films...
