Title: Spectre Toys at the Burbank Fest
Post by: Midnite on July 11, 2010, 04:22:24 AM
Spectre will have a very limited supply of Barnabas and Angelique figures to sell plus several prototypes on display.  See:

Spectre Toys to Haunt Dark Shadows Festival &  2010 San Diego Comic-Con (http://museummego.blogspot.com/2010/07/spectre-toys-to-haunt-dark-shadows.html)

The article also announces that Lara Parker will be signing at their Comic-Con booth on Saturday, July 24 from 3 to 4 p.m. (before the DS panel).

I went to the DS Fest on Saturday. As mentioned earlier, Spectre Toys had a booth in the dealers room with the Angelique and Barnabas action figures for $20.00 each. I bought the Barnabas figure. I didn't get the Angelique figure because it doesn't resemble her and it looks cheap.
Here's what Barney looks like in the package:

They also had some prototypes of the next line due in November. Subject to change.
I think they did a good job on Quentin and Willie, but Josette doesn't resemble Kathryn.
Neither does Adam, but it helps that he's wearing his green sweater.

Like I said, these are prototypes, so they might change.

Thanks so much for posting your photos!  [ghost_smiley]

but it helps that he's wearing his green sweater.

Indeed!  [b003]  (Poor Adam - all he ever wore was the gray sweater, the green sweater, the red plaid shirt, and pajamas...)

Quentin's eye's look like he's about to pass out.  [ghost_wink]  No doubt too much brandy.  [ghost_grin]

Barn looks as if he's been out on a bender.  Adam looks like a Ken doll that had an unfortunate encounter with a Mack truck.  Willie looks as if he's being played by one of the blokes from Thunderbirds are Go with a very mousey dye job. Quentin looks as if Magda just slipped him a mickey (either that, or Selby was reacting to some particularly preposterous line of dialogue Sam gave him).

Thanks so much for posting the pictures, Ronny!  [ghost_smiley]

Sadly, I'm alittle disappointed in the prototypes.. For starters,
- Quentin & Adam should really be taller than Josette & Willie
- Am I seeing wrong or did they give Josette blue eyes? And Willie brown ones?
- The men's clothes seem too baggy

That said, imo they did do a good job on Quentin's face & Josette's dress. And I still will probably end up buying them all, cept for Adam.

Well I personally am praying they don't do any of Grayson's characters... Adam seems an odd choice for the first release given that he was only on the show for a few months, and his storyline is so unpopular.  Maybe they didn't bother to find out what we actually like.

If they do a Grayson character, though, I'll live.  I've survived looking at the ghastly caricature of her in the Gold Key comics.  bleah.

I imagine that these prototypes were rushed into production for the fest.  They looks QUITE rough, so I would imagine a more refined final product.  Josette looks like a Moltke/Scott hybrid, which is interesting.  Adam needs the most work.  But, I LOVE the packaging.  Can't wait to get my Barnabas, Angelique, and Chris in the mail.

The Spectre Toys guy at the Fest said that they do plan to do Julia Hoffman, but the prototype didn't look right (no surprise) so they did not bring it along to the Fest. It is supposed to be ready around October (I think.) A couple of us told him that he should do Magda, and he liked the idea, so we'll see what happens. I think Magda might be easier to "get right" than Julia.  [ghost_wub]

Not to mention there would be no need of the football helmet for Magda.  [b003]

Considering how some of the prototypes that they did bring look, my mind boggles at how badly Julia must have turned out for them not to have brought her!  [scrdy]

A brief reference to DS figures at the upcoming SDCC. The writer said that the "older fans" can get their hands on them. Aren't there any new young DS fans who would also want these?

The new young DS fans are holding out for the Johnny Depp figure.   [ghost_wink]

But seriously, these probably will appeal mostly to us original DS fans.

Some of the prototypes have been improved since the Fest pics, namely Adam.  They still need some help, but they're getting there.

But who is the figure in front of the DS placard supposed to be?  Surely that is not Julia Hoffman...

In fact, I think it COULD be.  Get that doll over to Orhbach's immediately!

I like how the Quentin one seems to be rolling his eyes.  [ghost_rolleyes]

Barnabas needs some visine.

Poor Julia.  Would it had killed them to give the girl a little makeup, some jewery & a nice 3-piece jacket-shirt-skirt ensemble with matching gloves?!

Could it be David??

David's name wasn't among the prototypes that were going to be shown at Comic-Con - plus Julia's name is on the placard. Julia is the only character it could possibly be.  [ghost_smiley]

I remember once at a con I was talking to the guy who did the early Galactica comics for Marvel. I wanted to know why the characters did not look like the people on the show (actors). He said Marvel did not have likeness rights to the actors. They had to draw the characters without making them look exactly like the actors. I wonder if the company has the rights to the likenesses of Frid and Selby, but not the others. Quentin and Barnabas look like Frid and Selby, the rest are identifiable as characters...mostly, but not dead ringers for the actors.

"Julia," if that's supposed to be her, seems to have been derived from a still of Grayson as Pepe in "Satan in High Heels"!

And "Angelique" looks more like Samantha--the DS Samantha.

The Twilight Zone figures have real style about them.  I guess that's the assignment they give their artists who actually have talent.  Love the copy of the little devil box from that Shatner episode.

Grayson never wore anything like that, though.  With some color on the face and some Orhbach's fashions, it could work.

good god!

doctor julia hoffman in brown cotton pants? perish the thought!

I think the face is good, hair needs a bit of softening but Dr. Julia Hoffman never wore that outfit! egads!   [ghost_tongue] And the lack of accessories. . gloves, purse, watch, rings, broaches, earrings ...buckle shoes, Julia was all about the bling.

indeed!

doctor hoffman was nothing if not accessorized to the nth degree.

she should come with that colossal pocketbook,a bottle of sedatives and that hideous "heirloom" medallion.

If one takes a good look at the MPI music box or plates it's easy to think that Specte has no rights to the look of our DS charathers. Until MPI gets smart I'll settle for what I can get. Let's face it, if MPI would allow it most of us would be more than glad to pay big money for a REAL music box. You know, one with glass and metal.

The Julia doll looks more like Camille Paglia than Grayson Hall.  I was wondering if they were going to use rooted hair or molded plastic hair.  I guess her short 'do is a bit of a challenge, no matter what medium is used.

But, I agree -- Julia needs make-up, accessories, and either a dress or skirt suit with a lab coat over it.

That's on the right path Sara!  Maybe a little less pinkish lips--and i always note grayson had polished nails, how the heck did Julia have the time for a full manicure?

Got my werewolf Chris.  He is really cool, but the box is out of this world!  What a dream come true.  I hope that they fix what needs to be fixed for Series 2, because these have potential.

I totally agree! I like Barnabas, but I didn't even buy the Angelique figure because it doesn't do Lara Parker justice.
I had some free time, so I did some photo-shop work on a photo of the figure to show how it could have looked better.
First, change the shape of the eyebrows. She looks worried or constipated.
Give her some false eyelashes and a little blue eyeshadow.
Put some lipstick on her and--Voila!
Don't you think she looks better?

I don't think i'd pay my money for any of those.  they are horrible.

i've seen other "action" figures that are much much better likeness of the characters they are supposed to be.

what's with Josette's LONG face?  (Josette walks into the Blue Whale and orders a beer. Bartender brings her the beer and says, "why the long face.....?"

simply horrid.
