Title: August 7 - - Grayson Remembered
Post by: Julia99 on August 08, 2002, 06:56:58 AM
I meant to post a note earlier (since Steve seems MIA). .August 7th is the anniversary of Grayson's passing.  Light a candle or something. . I'm gonna have a vodka tonic myself.

Grayson Hall did a great job on Dark Shadows. I like the scenes with Julia and Barnabas. I have an autographed 8x10 of Grayson Hall. I hope she is at peace, and having a good time in the hereafter. David Ford also passed away on August 7th, so did Isabella Hoopes, in different years though. I saw it in the Dark Shadows Almanac 30th Anniversary Tribute.

:'(I just wanted to say that we lost a great lady on August 7, 1985.  She quickly became one of my favorites when she tried so hard to make our poor Barnabas walk in daylight.  And to stay by his side even though he loved so many other woman.  Wished she had at some point  told Barnabas that the she loved him.  The imagination can run wild thinking of how that would have worked.
I have seen her in several other movies, but I will always like her best in my favorite TV show.
Rest in peace Grayson you are truly missed.

Ya know, I never knew of Grayson's passing until a couple of months later.  Read it in a magazine.  I was SO saddened.  What a wonderful woman.

I'll always treasure the day I actually got to see her in the flesh.  (No...she was completely dressed).  LOL    Ahem...

Let's drink to Grayson!   [beer]

love

Ah, yes!  Grayson Hall.  DS' very own diva.  How odd, really, that she should end up on a soap opera, especially after her performance in "Night of the Iguana" in which she more than held her own in scenes with such heavyweights as Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, and Deborah Kerr.  Clearly, Hollywood didn't know what to do with her, although the Academy had the good sense to nominate her for TNOTI.

It's such a shame that she passed away when she did.  DS fandom was just beginning to take off in 1985, and one can only imagine what her contributions to the Fests would have been like.  Although, I think it's safe to assume she would have stolen the show every time!

Regards,

John

Probably more like shaking her head and laughing her ass off.

David Selby said he often thought she had sort of a "wicked" laugh.
(Just thought I'd throw that in there).   ;D

She will always be my favorite actress from DS!  What an interesting lady she was outside of the show too.  I heard an interview of hers in which she displayed intelligence and wit and I found myself glued to every word.  It is sad that she died so young.  I can only imagine the contributions she would have made to DS fandom at the fests as the other poster had talked about. Fortunately for us, a lot of fans keep her memory alive by writing fan fiction.  So many writers seem to have captured her spirit so aptly.

Some might say that we need to let DS go and move on.  But, why should we?  We care about the characters so much, I imagine it will be a life long passion for many of us.

With her sense of humor, I think her reaction might have been similar to William Shatner's "Will you people get a life?!"

Would love to have had the opportunity to shake her hand...

For me, Grayson WAS DS. I would not still be watching the show after all this time if not for her portrayal of Julia, Natalie, Magda and Hoffman. And it's because of Grayson that I have made so many wonderful friends who also appreciate this very much under-appreciated actress.

And I'm sure MrsJ. is right. I think Grayson would have thought we were all nuts!  :)

I was thinking of Grayson off and on throughout the day yesterday, so it was gratifying to log on here and see this space--thank you again, Julia darling.

One thing that is little known about Grayson in the world of fandom (or so it would seem) is how very kind and giving she so often was to Dark Shadows fans.  Robert Finnocchio's memoir of the time he spent with her (available on the beautiful Remembering Grayson website maintained by Nancy and Lynn) is typical of how much she enjoyed spending time with fans and getting to know them as people.  I have heard of cases of her telling fans they could call her collect.  I also heard a story about her calling a child long distance in Maryland to wish the little girl a happy birthday because she had received a note in which the child said hearing from "Julia" would make her day complete.

Grayson was definitely a bohemian.  She lived life to the fullest and she had no time for bullsh&t.  I've seen a video of a Fest held a year or two after her death in which Bob Costello (I think it was him) described her, with deepest affection, as "a gutsy broad."  He was smiling widely as he spoke about her.

Underneath the colorful wardrobe (we all loved the Bulgarian peasant widow look, accessorized with leather bomber jacket), the fabulous laughter and the booming asides, she had a vulnerable side which only her closest friends were allowed to see.  This did come out in her acting.  If you watch closely in certain scenes, you'll see what DS director Henry Kaplan referred to as her remarkable inner stillness.

Still missing that most fabulous of redheads....

I'm so glad we all had a space to post our thoughts and reflections. . .I think Grayson would've thought we were absurd but I'm sure she would've enjoy a Cosmo with me and my pals last night as I made sure we all toasted her!

And thanks Midnite for making the picture available to post within the original message. ..

Gosh Steve are you talking "in general" here or is there a picture of Grayson in a peasant "look" with a bomber jacket?  I'd pay $$ to see that .. .
