Title: Orange Plaid Sportsjacket sighting on CBS Sunday Morning
Post by: Pansity on August 10, 2008, 07:26:51 PM
I was minding my own business this morning, watching CBS Sunday Morning while I ate and did laundry. At the end of the show when they do the Bill Geist feature,my eyes got a shock.   [yikes]

The feature was on oddball sports which should have been in the Olympics, so as a departure point he was doing the intro from Chinatown in NYC.  What caught my eyeballs was what he was wearing in that pickup shot (and ONLY that pickup shot).

It was the twin brother of  Quentin's infamous eyespraining orange plaid sportsjacket from PT 1970.  [faint2]

Two scary points to ponder: I believe the news division wears their own clothes -- and I was told a long time ago that at one point  (80s and/or earlier) actors in contemporary soaps (esp.males) were asked to wear their own clothes too.

Alas, I've been looking on line and I can't find either a still or a vid of the infamous jacket's comeback to share.

Well, the first step in the jacket's amazing journey from Q to this modern sportscaster would have to be the abc dumpster.

GAK! We have to find it and burn it before it has a chance to copulate with other sports jackets and create little orange baby sportsjackets!

...In case you can't tell, I'm a little punchy tonight. [ghost_tongue2]

Wow, I wonder whether some families wiill be suing for residual psychic damage suffered from view that "toxic shock" orange monstrosity!

I mean, this pretty much blows Janet Jackson's breast RIGHT out of the water!

I am LOL over Magnus' comment about the ABC dumpster.  Maybe somebody rescued one of Cassandra's wigs and those awful sweaters they made poor Julia wear over her first months from there...

I don't think Janet's breast could be blown anywhere seeing as it doesn't move because it isn't real!! [ghost_wink]

On Topic: My eyes melted during PT.  I hollered over and over "For God sake this man is the master of Collinwood and this is the only coat he has??"  Don't get me rambling about the clothing department on DS.  GRRR......

My theory has been that it was somebody's bright  (?) idea to show that this was an alternate universe by having fashion be different.   I remember a lot of clashing colors in PT, and strange choices, such as Stokes's black shirt with a bow tie.

When they went from RT1840 to PT1841, the clothing colors got lighter.  Compared to the dark and sombre 1840RT, the colors practically look like pastels.   I remember a lot of blue and green together in both PT periods.

Mental image: wino with a black wig, ugly sweater, and orange sport coat staggering down the street.  Now how do we get to CBS 2008 from there...?

It was a deliberate choice to make the color schemes of 1970PT and 1841PT so radically different from Real Time. The bright, vibrant, bold colors and the often wild patterns in not just the clothes but in the decor of the houses are a false facade that attempts to mask the darkness at the heart of everything that's happening in PT. I've always thought it was an inspired stylistic choice.

Just to chime in that I LOVED the re-styling of the sets and look in PT 1970.  Quentin's orange jacket WAS a major faux-pas but did underline the character's emotional instability.  Alexalique's Peter Max dress puts me into a trance on the DVDs!

Don't get me wrong.  I loved the "LOOK" of the show during PT however, I was just incredibly sick of the damn jacket.  He was rich and he wore it over and over and over...and well you get the point.  It's like Eve and VampAngie who wore the same outfit over and over.
I actually was telling a friend the other day about how I like the "look"of the show in the later years best.

Thanks.  Thought so.  Presumably when you say something this way, you mean that it's confirmed by what makers of DS have said...

Indeed it is. Sy Tomashoff, Mostoller & Stanley Simmons and Mary McKinley-Haas have all commented on it at one time or another.

LOL Like 1897 Quentin wore (with the exception of the episode where we first met him) the SAME DAMN SUIT every day for a nearly year long storyline?  Must have had a closet full of them, all alike, to cover the ones bit the dust every full moon.... [Wolfie] Even if Edward didn't recognize the messed up face, and the height  -- how DID he miss THAT SUIT?

I seem to remember thinking that the werewolf was wearing a considerably darker suit than the one quentin wore all the time. Maybe the curse also changes the color of your suit somehow  [ghost_cheesy]. By the way, I'm almost certain that the werewolf was a good amount shorter than Quentin. I mean honestly, the guy they put in that werewolf suit was like 6 inches shorter than david selby, lol...

Yes you are correct Garth. I think it is mentioned in the POM press books that Alex Stevens (Stunt Double) was ALOT shorter than David Sebly or Don Briscoe!  [ghost_wink]

Not to mention the change in eye color.  Alex Stevens has brown eyes.  [ghost_grin]

Unless I'm mistaken, most canines have dark-colored eyes, so that can be forgiven. :P

LOL, I'd bet that's it.  And similarly, how he got the gig as the "falling baker" who was seen (but not heard) on early Sesame Streets:  [ghost_tongue2]

Hmm, I had to do some checking, and while the eye color of wolves ranges from pale yellow to amber or dark brown, apparently there are no blue-eyed adult wolves.  So you are correct that the change can be forgiven.  [thumbleft]

But you might owe all Siberian huskies an apology.  j/k  ;)

I've always been quite fond of huskies, so I'll have to make a formal apology at some point or another, that's correct.

Shot of Quentin turning into a wolf. Not only do his eyes change color, but his height - from a lanky six-foot-five changes to a short and stubby five-foot-four beastie. Now I ask you, how sci-fi can you get?
Title: Re: Orange Plaid Sportsjacket sighting on CBS Sunday Morning
Post by: MagnusTrask on August 20, 2008, 09:16:22 AM
A sig of mine elsewhere: "I hate sci-fi... I love science-fiction."   I never know what people mean anymore by these labels though.

Just once, I'd like to see one of those close-up transition face shots of Q turning into the werewolf, where just as Selby's face is fading out and the stuntman's face is fading in, we just see the top of the werewolf's head because he's so much shorter, and the camera has to do a quick pan downward to get his whole face in the shot.   Scary cello music blasting away the whole time, of course.

Fairly unrelated idea:  how 'bout a "merwolf", like a mermaid and a werewolf together?   Top half wolf bottom half fish?

CBS is planning a spinoff series for the jacket.  They've probably already taken some promotional photos of it.

Whose was it?  Grant Douglas'?  RT Quentin?  PT Quentin?

It was PT Quentin's and apparently the only jacket he owned!

I have me a hankerin' for a little blood-curdling horror.  Would someone with computer skills care to throw an image of the jacket up here?   I'm afraid I can't make it worth your while, but it'll be fun.

Now, now - that's not true. He wore others. Here are but a few:

There are already many captures with Quentin wearing it, but here's another:

From Ep #988:

And I still say it was a very fashionable jacket for the '70s - whether in PT or RT.  [ghost_smiley]  (Though personally I liked double-breasted better back then. I would have loved to have had that blue jacket from Ep #985.)

Okay.  He wore that one more times than not.  Or perhaps a day went on for two or three weeks? I have only watched PT once so I guess I am not a good judge. I have noticed after the FX and scary stuff came in the fashion budget went out the door.  IMHO.  All the cast seems to have many different clothes in the early eps in The Beginning Collectors series.

I suspect that the reason some people have the impression that's the only jacket Quentin wore was because when[spoiler]Quentin escaped from jail, he was wearing that jacket - and he continued to wear it the entire time he was on the lam. Who knows why Angelexis couldn't have gotten him some other clothes?  [ghost_huh]  Or at least a comb?!  [ghost_cheesy]  But she didn't...[/spoiler]

It's the same case with Adam and the green sweater. Some people think that's all he ever wore. But quite obviously it isn't. Though compared to PT Quentin, Adam definitely had a limited wardrobe for such a long running character.

Sorry to back track - but I wanted to point out that Quentin's ghost actually had a larger wardrobe than Quentin did in 1897.

arashi, I'm having real problems assimilating that observation into my brain.  The process goes something like this: "Hmm...he was walled up in that room...was there a sewing machine?...or was it he who was bricked up in that room?...did he roam the world buying clothes for seventy years until he had finally assembled an adequate wardrobe for haunting?...did he run into any ectoplasmic trouble trying on clothes?...did he buy a zoot suit?...or an orange plaid sportsjacket?...no, he can't have, or he'd have worn them...but...but...but...CTRL-ALT-DEL...Hmm...he was walled up in that room..."

What caught my eyeballs was what he was wearing in that pickup shot (and ONLY that pickup shot).

It was the twin brother of  Quentin's infamous eyespraining orange plaid sportsjacket from PT 1970.

At last, the segment has made it onto YouTube!  As Jeannie mentioned, the jacket, in all its ugly glory, can be seen during the intro and at the start of the segment:

Hmm, going to have to look next time I do a run through of that storyline.  What I DO remember (from having checked some things multiple times for fanfiction purposes) is that 1897 Quentin had two suits that looked to be the same, but one appeared more a dark charcoal, and the other the navy one we all remember (and Edward SHOULD have remembered in the jail cell.  After all how many guys in that town were six foot four with muttonchops and an expensive custom made suit?  Inquring minds want to know about this small town.....)

And thanks for the catch on the youtube clip, Midnight.  Nice to have digital evidence of this for all to peruse the weirdness of it all.
