Title: OT: Alert for Donna McKechnie Fans
Post by: Gothick on August 06, 2008, 07:13:20 PM
Dear Fans,

I'm not really a worshipper at the Shrine of Donna, but those in New England might want to consider seeing her in this production being staged in Waltham, Mass.:

Broadway legend, Donna McKechnie, is Lucille in Nanette!
(To order tickets Call 781-891-5600 and mention code TMNANETTE)

Broadway legend, Donna McKechnie,
is Lucille in
No, No, Nanette!

Tony Winning Best Actress in colorful 20's song and dance extravaganza!

Broadway's own, Donna McKechnie, headlines as Lucille in the joyous "I Want To Be Happy" musical!

Vincent Youmans' "Nanette" serves up plenty of comedy, romantic misunderstandings, 1920's Manhattan, breezy
Atlantic City, sea side fun, bathing beauties and even - "Tea for Two!"

Watch for Donna's song and dance turns in "Too Many Rings Around Rosie" and the delightfully syncopated Castle
Walk choreography of "You Can Dance With Any Girl!"

Featuring: Jessica Greeley as Nanette, Mary Jane Houdina as Sue, Waltham Mayor Jeanette McCarthy as Pauline, Jerry
Walker as Jimmy, Russell Rhodes as Billy and Jason Michael Butler as Tom.

Directed by Robert J. Eagle - Choreographed by Eileen Grace

Professional sets-costumes! Full pit orchestra! Air conditioned! Plenty of free parking!

cheers, G.

I just copied-and-pasted the copy from the theatre's office.  As I said, I'm not really a fan, although I've heard she is a very nice lady and still a phenomenal dancer.

Actually, Donna McKechnie is considered a Broadway "legend," right up there with Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon, Bernadette Peters, et al.  No, she has never been a "star" in films or TV, but to the national theatre community (of which I am a part), Donna is indeed a Broadway icon, aka legend!!  If you haven't already done so, please read her wonderful autobiography, "Time Steps: My Musical Comedy Life" for a better understanding of this true Broadway "legend."

Brian (who has been in the "biz" for nearly 30 years).

Donna has also won a Tony award. She was outstanding lead actress in a musical for A CHORUS LINE waaaay back in 1976. You can even see her acceptance speech on youtube and it is very exciting to hear the cheers and bravos when her name is announced. Donna, by the way, beat both Gwen Verdon AND Chita Rivera for the Tony that year. Donna also was a sensation in the original productions of PROMISES, PROMISES and COMPANY. I agree that her autobiography is well worth reading.

Here's the link to the column online:  Yes, yes, she'll take the dress (http://www.boston.com/ae/celebrity/articles/2008/08/11/from_98_degrees_to_hottest_girl/). No photo online, though, so people will just have to imagine the lashes.  [ghost_grin]

gothick,

this is about as off-topic as can be but i figured you might get a kick out of this tidbit.

in the book "superstar in a housedress" you tipped me off to there is a passage about how jackie curtis and candy darling showed up at auditions for a busby berkeley production of "no,no,nanette" in 1970...in drag no less!

jackie was in bright orange pancake makeup, his hair tied up in a turban made of torn nylon stockings,an army jacket and ripped black tights.needless to say she did not get a part.

MSC, clearly, Jackie was a GENIUS far in advance of his own time!

I do hope you have been able to see the YouTube clip of Jackie performing "I enjoy being a girl."  Truly priceless material!

Jackie should have been on DS!  He could have started up where Hannah Stokes left off!

yes.

the recent talk of 'leona eltridge'(and her questionable gender)in another topic made me think she would have been the prefect role for one of the three warhol "girlettes"...and jackie would have been perfect!
