I am so excited about this lineup! I didn't think Jonathan Frid would go to another festival after last year. Of course, last year's was so heartwarming, and I was so grateful to be able to finally see him since I'd never attended the festivals he'd participated in years ago. It should be a fun time for all of us, and I can't wait.  [snow_grin]

Interesting that Selby's name isn't listed yet. Considering that this is Quentin's 40th Anniversary year, it would be a real shame if he doesn't attend...

He might be working on his HBO show and can't be with us that weekend.

I like that they're trying to start the banquet earlier than they used it.  It always seemed to end so late and made it hard for everyone who had early flights the next day to enjoy one last night with friends.

Please, what is this "lost 1968 script"?
Title: Re: Shadowgram Update #181
Post by: adamsgirl on February 23, 2008, 12:42:00 AM
According to The Dark Shadows Almanac, there were four preliminary scripts from 1968 that were never produced. The book says, though, that some of the material in those scripts was utilized in the actual produced episodes. In order, they were episodes 628 through 631. All took place during the Adam/Eve storyline wherein Angelique was a vampire. As for which episode will be re-enacted during the festival, we'll have to see. I'm assuming these are the episodes they're talking about.

All took place during the Adam/Eve storyline
That explains why they were lost.  [snow_wink]

This is great news! [clap2] Yes, indeed, it would be a shame if David Selby couldn't attend, especially since it Quentin's 40th Anniversary year. [sadg] But, it's great that Jonathan Frid will be there! [cheer]

I watched The Governor and J. J. frequently but must have missed Miss Bennett's appearance on it. Of course, I last saw it IN 1970, so ...

Regarding these untaped scripts: another reason why they weren't used may have to do with the offscreen pregnancy of Alexandra Moltke.  These episodes were right around the time Alexandra left the show in November 1968.  Her last show was #627 which aired 11/19/68.  The character of 'Eve" had been killed in the previous episode, and we last see Alexandra's Vicki on the Collinwood stairs with Julia Hoffman discussing the murder.   From what we know of the unused scripts, they also cover Eve's murder and the introduction of Chris and Amy.  However, it seems that the events in the finished shows seemed accelerated compared to the synopses to the unused scripts as shown in The Dark Shadows Almanac

I think that since Alexandra's demand to given release from her contact due to her pregnancy must have forced the writers to do quick rewrites to 'speed up' to storyline to get rid of eithetr the actress or the character (perhaps both!).  As Betsy Durkin has revealed recently, her hiring as Alexandra's replacement was rather quick- Curtis was desperate for an actress who could do the part at a moment's notice.  The fact that two episodes were taped out of sequence and held back until a replacement was found for Alexandra proves this.  Betsy Durkin first appears in Show# 630 which was taped on 11/19 (ironically, the very day Alexandra's last show aired on ABC), and was aired only three days later!  Meanwhile, Shows# 631 and 632 had already been taped BEFORE  #630, so the production staff was determined to keep the show going while a replacement for Alexandra was sought.  True, Betsy really didn't resemble Alexandra, but given the circumstances, she did the best she could, and in appreciation of her appearances at recent DS Festivals, I'd like to say 'thanks'.

Unfortunately, unless I win a lottery or find out I'm related to the Trumps, I won't be at LA this summer.  I wish the actors best of luck in acting out a 'lost' episode.

I caught Joan's appearanceon the Governor and JJ.  She played a character named Joan Darlene Delaney and wore the outfit that she wore on the HODS poster.  Joan DD operated the Harbor Hill House, I think.  It wasn't a restaurant, though.  It was a bordello!

Hmmm...no mention of the rumored 2008 DVD release of HODS and NODS, which was mentioned as the "theme" (along with the possible Depp version of DS) of the 2008 gathering, although there is a segment devoted to the NODS restoration.  This could be taken any number of ways.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
Title: Re: Shadowgram Update #181
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on February 24, 2008, 09:16:15 PM
I'm just happy that there's even going to be a segment on the restoration because that probably means that it's still alive in some form and the initial reports that Warner's only plan is to issue the 97 minute print were possibly premature. Any segment that has the word "highlights" in it can't be all bad...

Yep.  After finding out Jonathan was going to make the trek again this year, I went from deciding that I could not make it to Burbank to making my plane and hotel reservations in less than 24 hours (once my wife gave the o.k.  [snow_wink] )

Charles, I hate to hear that you will not be able to make it.  I was hoping you would be able to figure out a way.  I guess I'll have to find someone else to hang out with this year.  I'll take plenty of pics and send you a copy.  May be Suzanne will make it and that'll give me one person I already know.

Joan Bennett as a Madam ... WOW!  That, I would love to see.  Maybe this show will be one of the vintage series up for DVD release later this year. I know I'm excited about VCI's plans to release Honey West.

I hope that there can finally be a screening this year of Grayson Hall's Playtex commercial to placate members of Her Legion.  I know that there must be a copy of it on one of the 1970 DS Master tapes because they contain all the commercials, and the spot was aired more than once during DS.

They'd better plan to repeat the commercial at least once because you know there will be screaming, stampeding in the aisles, etc. as soon as it starts!

All in all, it sounds like a fun Festival.  AND, it's all happening in Beautiful Downtown Burbank!  Will Ernestine be on the phone lines reminding us that somebody or other is "omnipotent"?

cheers, G.

HELLO EVERYBODY - HOTEL UPDATE!!!

The rate that DS has secured for us is $139.00/night.  However, if you are staying for four nights (like me, I'm getting there the 17th and checking out the 21st) then you can get a special 4-night rate through the internet website for only $126.75/night.  So going through the website, provided you are going to do a four night stay, is less expensive than the DS rate.

The Days Inn listed in Shadow gram you can get now for $80.45/night.  It appears to be about 14 blocks away from the Marriot so it would be a good walk for some and a cab ride for those who have difficulty walking.  I did not check out the other hotel's rates listed in Shadowgram but distance-wise they seem to be the same or farther than Days Inn.  I considered the Days Inn but do not know how safe the area is at night and really don't want to have to walk that far back to my room that late at night.

I really am stunned that Jonathan is going all the way to CA for this summer's Fest, good for him!! I am so glad I got to Tarrytown last summer as West Coast Fests are realy pretty much out of the question for me.

So at least Jonathan will be able to see John Karlen this year, for those of us who were sorry JK did not come to Tarrytown.

Does anyone know if Jonathan will be participating in the 1968 episode reinactment?? THAT would be neat, and would probably what a lack the other onstage reinactments have been for us fans of his.

If it's one of the 1968 eps that we're thinking of, and if Frid were to appear, it would have to be as a character other than Barnabas because Barn doesn't appear in any of the four episodes.

With RD supposedly not attending, Frid could play Jeff Clark. Now THAT would be a sight to see!

I was severely on the fence about going to this fest, but after the recent news I'm swayed to one side more than the other. Only problem is that I've got to find someone to go with me, because Mother won't do plane travel. And it's just no fun going alone. Not to mention the fact that I wanted to go on a European cruise this summer as well, and the fest is right in the middle of my cruise I wanted to book! Dammnit! lol

I second that - I went alone to the Tarrytown fest in '04.  Except for some business trips years ago, I don't travel alone either.  I admit I was a little hesitant but I really had a great time.  I had a chance to say hello to several people from the board and also enjoyed some rare solitude (especially enjoyed wandering around the Lyndhurst estate and being able to come and go as I pleased.)  So go ahead - get a room with big king sized bed, kick back and relax, order room service if the mood strikes you...but, don't miss out on this one because it sounds like it's going to be great!

Oh, I don't know, Brandon - I frequently travel alone to events/functions no one else  I know has any interest in and I have managed to enjoy myself quite a bit.  Put your name or screen name on your badge in big letters and I bet you will get stopped by people on this board who will introduce themselves to you.

I went to Ireland by myself when I was 22 years old for two weeks and had the time of my life. I met plenty of other people I wound up hanging out with.

Thanks to those who have reassured that traveling alone is just fine! I'm sure it it, but I've never done it before. But, I guess you've got to take the leap sometime or another! Hey Brandon,

Don't know if you are looking for someone to hang with, hold places in line, save chairs during the events and such but I will be there alone too (my wife is not into DS).  I met Charles Ellis in Tarrytown in August and we hung out together during the weekend and had a blast.  And it was great to have someone hold place in the long lines with the waiting times for bathroom trips, etc.

Let me know if you are interested.

This is a good line up. Diane and I may reconsider sitting this year out after all. Flying to LA from Virginia is well, not as much fun these days but what i really missed about last year's show is seeing Jonathan and John Karlen together.

BTW, I know Jonathan does not plan on being in the 1968 recreation, but wouldn't he make a fine Nicholas Blair  [snow_wink]

Hope everyone is doing well.

I still think it would be a real shame if he can't attend. But if he can't, at least it would be because he has so much going on in his career, and that's certainly never a bad thing.
