Title: Your Imput is needed. Tell me what you think. Have we been burned before?
Post by: loril54 on November 15, 2007, 05:53:51 PM
I would like to ask you for your help. We need to show our love for our show. I have been posting now for over  6 months on the announcements about the TV Vote and been leaving it at that.  It is under can use some help.   You can even see the links at the bottom of my post, to the vote page and the general discussion.   We are just over 3000 away form being in the top 40.  Number 40  has decided to stop us.

What do you guys think of things like this?  Do you think that these things don't really mean anything?  If you have any thoughts or places to get the word out can you please tell me.  Thank you very much for your time. Please forgive me if I am putting this in the wrong spot.  But I wanted to find out what people think.

If you want to send me a personal message please do.

These polls could make a few people who read them take DS a bit more seriously.  I don't think it has huge PR value for us unless iDS is near the top, though, and there are too many cult shows now that that's unlikely.     I never expect anything I like to be popular, and I'm so much on the fringes of things that I don't think my vote counts for anything, not even politically.    If polls are a source of worry or stress, they're probably not worth it.  If you enjoy partricipating and aren't too frustrated by losing, it sounds worthwhile.

IMO, there's not much long-range point to it.  I can see it as something fun to do but in the end, no matter who is on top, the poll doesn't mean anything because people can vote pretty much as much as they want to vote.  When I worked for SciFi years ago, I know they take polls seriously when you can vote once, not several times a day.  It's not a poll to be taken seriously; if people enjoy voting several times a day on a poll, good for them.  I need more of a payoff before I would be willing to spend that kind of time and energy on something.

To paraphrase Miss Jean Brodie--for those who find this sort of thing important, this is the sort of thing that would be important to them.  *wry grin* I think these polls (they run them on sites all over the nets, don't they?)  are hotly followed by folks who spend a large part of their day socializing online.  Not at all to say that that's a bad thing--in these days of iPhones, people can be online while driving, working, paying bills AND having dinner with their friends.   [hall2_shocked]

I personally don't think DS will ever be acclaimed as one of the top ten TV shows--nor do I mourn that fact in any way.  I think if DS had the potential for that kind of acclaim, it would be far too generic for me to stay intrigued by it all these years.  I do think that it's interesting that as the years have gone by and the series hasn't been picked up by any other network, DS' visibility in pop culture has seemed to spike in the past year or two.  The fact that they included a scene from one of the shows in that high profile Augusten Burroughs thing last year, plus all the hoopla around the Depp project, certainly means it's very much out in public view.  Not bad for a show that hasn't been on the air for several years now.

OMG - G. used a smiley!  >:D

But seriously...amen Steve... ;) I am an avid a fan of DS as anyone out there, but frankly I had become disenchanted with these sorts of polls a long time ago. They don't seem to lead to anything concrete, and I just don't have the time (although I like to read over my DS writing groups when I can; fanfic is a nice diversion, for me.) Plus I have been extremely busy working towards graduating and a career as of late, and when I do come online and see the posts pushing and soliciting the same poll ad nauseum in my inbox, personally it annoys me more than anything. But then, that's just my opinion...everyone has a right to their own. If other people love these sorts of things, be my guest...whatever floats your boat.  [hall2_wink]

Take heart. I have been voting for abou a month now. I work on a computer so I am able to get 5 or 6 votes in a day. I have been doing it for fun and to help all those that are passionate about it. I would love to see DS in the top forty just because.....

I've always thought this poll was a waste of time.
But if the people playing it enjoy themselves, more power to them.
However Ray made some good points in favor of the poll.
If they bring new people to DS or remind people about DS
that is a good thing.
Title: Welcome Shamwicky and voting has it's benefits

Welcome Shamwicky to the forum and thanks for contributing your votes to Dark Shadows.

There are so many different ways to get Dark Shadows noticed by others; this voting is one way.  Another, of course, is writing to the networks to get Dark Shadows on TV again.  Also, buying the DVDs, watching them with friends and family and going to festivals.  Geez, those are all fun things to do and it keeps the stars of Dark Shadows coming back because they know we are still interested in them at actors and the show because of the entertainment.  The actors profit, the manufacturers profit and the fans profit.  It's all a good thing.  [hall2_cheesy]

Thanks for the warm welcome. I  am an "original" Dark Shadows fan. Strarted watching at age 8 during the 1795 storyline. I am going through a tough time in my life and getting back to Dark Shadows after almost 40 years has given me an escape.

I wish I knew about all the fanfest, etc. sooner. I thought I was the only one that was obssesed with the show as a kid!

It has been so much fun reading both books written by Lara Parker and remembering the old plotlines. Does anyone realize that you can watch episode 1-555 for free on guba.com.? It stops in the middle of the Adam plotline. I am going to purchase the next arc of episodes .

Favorite Charater: Josette  Favorite Hunk: Chris

Never thought Jonathan Frid was attractive as a child but now as a forty something woman I see what all the hoopla was about!

Your welcome Mr. G... I love Julia slapping that witch.  It couldn't happen to a nice person.  [hall2_wink]  I believe she had slapped several others, including Joe.  But I can't remember all of them. CRS

Shamwicky, I know you can get all the episodes, post-Barnabas, on DVD from online stores like www.deepdiscount.com or www.amazon.com or rent from Netflix!!  Eventually the earlier pre-Barnabas episodes will be available to the public.  Only the first 70 episodes are available at the online stories and definitely from MPI.com.
