Title: Craig Hamrick
Post by: Phoebe on September 24, 2006, 04:21:03 PM
To all my dear friends Craig Hamrick passed this morning. By his side was his husband Joe Salvatore. Peter and John and I were with him yesterday. I believe my dear friend is in the arms of his mentor Louis Edmonds and his cat Lucy. Craigs didn't want any flowers or fruit baskets sent to his house. He wished for donations to be sent to the ASPCA in his name. I called them and a fund is being set up for him I will have more information on this tomorrow.  May your Higher power bless you all for your kindness it means alot to Joe.

I am truly saddened to hear this, although I've been preparing myself for it ever since John posted he'd gone into hospice care--that usually spells the end.  I feel VERY fortunate to have met Craig and been able to call him 'friend' for 13 years!  We had some GREAT, funny times over the years and I will cherish them always, just as I will always cherish my memories of Dean.  I'm so glad that I was able to see Craig one last time at the Festival and spend a little time w/him, though I now realize it shouild have been more.  I'm also glad that I got to meet Joe in 2003 and get to know him a little.  He's a sweet, special man and I can't think of anyone I would have rather had be w/Craig than him.  My heart goes out to him now because although Craig's pain has ended, Joe's is just beginning.  Lastly I find it HIGHLY appropriate that Craig died on Louie's birthday!  What a wonderful present for Big Lou, to be w/Craig again.  It makes me feel a little better knowing that Craig is now w/Louis, Joel, Keith, Grayson et al...

P.S. Janet, I *did* get your message this morning and will call you this afternoon, have some urgent errands this morning.

I just read that it is Louie's Birthday. This news will mean alot to Joe since towards the end Craig keep talking about missing Louie. All day I will just keep thinking of all of them some place celebrating Louie's BD. I know if someone had told Craig that he would pass on this day he would find it a sign that he would go to a peaceful place filled with people that would love him. This news makes ke smile.

I also told Joe that today was louie's BD the first thing he said was "Shut up"!!  then he said that is all the sign I need to know he is having a major party up there. Bless you louie and I told Craig to tell Keith I said hello I believe he did. Wow, 365 days a year and he passes on this day, amazing. Makes you believe in something

I recall how kind Craig was to Louis, how much of a comfort and a help he was to Big Lou.
And Craig's kindness and understanding to me.

He will not be forgotten.

I'm sorry for your lost and Craig's family/friends' lost.  But what an honor for Craig and Louis to be together again.  I do think Soul planned it that way and a wonderful tribute to both men!!  One thing is for sure, Craig will not have any more suffering.  I believe he'll be in contact with his loved ones so watch your dreams and inner thoughts.  I'm not talking DS music here, I'm serious.  Once we shed our physical bodies we are freer then we've ever been.  Keep your minds and hearts open and Craig will find a way to communicate with his friends and family.

Peace.

Thank you guys this place has given me great comfort. What special people are here. Joe has read all your posts and knowing that Craig has touched so many people has made him feel better. I do want to say that I lost a friend from Ovarian Cancer three years ago. I told Craig how I feel she comes to me in my dreams he said if I can get to you I will. And he did, just passing on this day is a sign.

One way we can help keep the memory of Craig's work alive is to spread the word.

I just started a tribute thread to him at ClassicHorrorFilmBoard.com (click Final Farewells)

Whatever sites we all visit, let's let our fellow posters know about Craig and the wonderful work he did while he was here.

Craig Hamrick was one of the most generous and genuine people I knew...  He was my friend for over 12 years and I can't express how painful this is...I'm so angry...I don't understand the rhyme and reason to who lives and who dies.... Joe and Janet....I am here for you....now he's an angel....but then again....he always was.... I will miss you Craig....

I am very sad to learn of the death of my good friend Craig Hamrick today.  No matter how bad things were for him, he never complained.  He always had a great outlook on life, continued working until the end, he was a dedicated friend to all of us, and very dedicated to the memory of 'Dark Shadows' and preserving that.  His work in photography and in writing Dark Shadows books is a legacy, he did so much in his short 40 years.  I'm glad he is out of pain now, and with the angels, taking  his rightful place among them.  God Bless you Craig, we will love you and miss you always and forever.  Rick Hatch

It's heartbreaking, and so damn unfair.  Any news on funeral arrangements, etc?  Is there any contributions that we can make in his name?  When you think of all of the evildoers who walk on the face of the earth while good people like Craig leave us so soon, you wonder about life itself.  Still, we have to go on living to honor the Craigs of this world.  If reincarnation is indeed possible, we will be seeing the likes of him again- and that's something to hope about.

But for now as we grieve for our friend, a few words from Mr. Sheakespeare:

He was a man, take him for all in all,
I shall not look upon his like again.

Charles,

As Craig got his two cats from the NY ASPCA, his wishes were if anyone wanted to donate money to please donate to this wonderful organization in his name.  I'm told by Janet that they have set up a fund in Craigs name.

That is beautiful Charles I love it and it is so true. Craig's wishes were for no flowers to be sent and that he would like people to send a donation to the ASPCA were he and Joe adopted there cats. I am in touch with them and tomorrow a fund will be set up for Craig. I will post an address for them tomorrow.

Thank you

Diane and I extend our sympathy to Craig's friends, family and most especially to Joe. Our copy of "Big Lou" signed by both Craog and Louis will always remain a very cherished item. We are regular contributors to the ASPCA, part of each of my paychecks goes to them through the United Way. This is available through may payroll areas and is a great way to make a contribution to that special organization. Craig has been on our prayer list at church all along. Our prayers will continue for Joe, Phoebe and those close to Craig.  Who knows, perhaps Craig may surprise us should we be lucky to join him on the golden shore with his new biography of St Francis.

That is such a wonderful thought. His two cats were his babies. He had another baby when he lived in Kansas, Lucy, she welcomed Craig and took him to louie. That is what the books say.

I never met Craig in person, but I also want to extend my sincere condolences and sympathies to Craig's friends and loved ones. I've lived through a string of family crisis and terminal illnesses through the past 13 yrs, and at times it seems a bit too overwhelming to handle. And that the pain, a constant ache at times, will never end. But time and the love of friends (including some that I have come to know through these boards and others) have helped greatly. To quote one of my dear friends, "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die."
He will be missed, but his wonderful work and memory will live on...

I was offline all weekend and just heard this news today.  I am so very deeply sorry for Craig's loved ones.  I really do feel that it was not a coincidence that he passed over on Louis' birthday and that this should be taken as a positive, comforting sign that he's smiling and happy again.

I am sorry he left so soon but, relieved that Craig's battle is over and that he is now at peace.  It's hard for us to realize at times but, I really think that at some point, the only way we can be whole again is to move on to the next level - the ultimate healing so to speak.  I believe with all my heart that there is a better place and that he is now there.

Blessings to all.

I went to the fest this year and met Craig by sure luck. I saw him sitting at his table, and glanced at his nametag as I was walking past (my eyes were actually working that day!!) and I ran right up to my room and got my books of his for him to sign. Something told me to sit and talk with him a while, but I was too afraid I was going to miss something else, so I left after about 5 minutes. I wish I had've listened to my gut instinct.

I hope everyone he was close to will get through this and know that Craig is having a brandy with "Roger". Never too early to drink!

Cheers, Craig.

I wanted to thank everyone in this chat forum for their kind words about my partner, Craig Hamrick.  I hope that you understand how difficult this time is for me and for our families.

Having said that, I would ask that donations to any specific animal shelters be held until I've named the place of Craig's and my choice.  I am currently researching possibilities, and I intend to post the final choice by Wednesday of this week.  Other than to post that shelter information, I will not be responding to any other questions concerning Craig's passing or his memorial at this time.  Information about the memorial will be distributed when a date, time, and location have been set.

Thank you for your patience and understanding and your love for Craig.  I'm sure he is happy to know that he has touched so many people.

Perhaps one of the things that could be done in Craig's memory is for any of us 40 or over to get tested for colon cancer. I know I put off my test for 5 years, just because it seems so unpleasant. Today I scheduled it. I did not know him, but I somehow think he might like this idea. Just a thought...

If anything would make Craig do the dance of joy in the great beyond, this would, rainingwolf.   Cancer is an equal opportunity offender - young, old, smoker, non-smoker and everything and everyone in between - and there are tools we can use to do the very best we can to get screened/tested and take certain steps to protect ourselves.

You know, something else about Craig that I want to say which I find remarkable.  I want to do so without sounding snarky.  Craig was a guy who grew up loving the TV culture and shows like Dark Shadows, obviously.  He became a writer, editor and photographer and through his work found ways to meet performers he admired as a child.  In the Dark Shadows fandom, he became good friends with Louis Edmonds and wrote his biography, he met Nancy Barrett, produced her cabaret shows in New York and got her to attend the Dark Shadows Festivals, he encouraged Marie Wallace to write her memoir, designed and launched websites for Lara Parker, Diana Millay, Denise Nickerson and on it goes. Last year a big dream came true when Craig had some trivia questions published in the TV Guide!

Now, there are plenty of people for whom all this would make them feel pretty self-important.  Not Craig.  He saw his accomplishments as the result of hard work and being blessed - not an entitlement of any kind.  He relished fulfilling things he could only dream of as a youngster and maintained that childlike awe about it all rather than a sense of being jaded.   Craig was a grounded person and a kind, helpful person.   His "connections" never went to his head though it certainly could in many people and the "connections" were used to help make projects to ultimately benefit fans happen.  Sure, it was also a business to Craig since he was "in the business" but he went out of his way many times for fans to get them information, provide guidance and even encouragement.

Another friend of mine was (at the time) recently diagnosed as having cancer and had chemo to look forward to, and he was plenty scared.  I mentioned this to Craig and Craig told me to give his email addy to my friend and have my friend write to him.  The ensuing correspondence helped my friend a great deal.  Craig didn't have to do that and if anyone was tired of hearing about or dealing with cancer, it was Craig.  But he knew someone was scared and in the same situation he had been in during the initial stages of diagnosis.  He wanted to help.

That's the kind of person Craig was.

Nancy

How sweet of Craig's Joe to find the time to post here, I know things have got to be tough for him and Craig's other loved ones now?? I have a question, though, has any thought been given to setting up a memorial fund or how to do memorial donations on behalf of Craig to say the American Cancer Society or a colon cancer charity??  I was thinking that might be another nice thing to do, in keeping with those mentioning this has prompted them to get checked for colon cancer...

I love your name. I don't know what Joe has planned. I lost one of my best friends 3 years ago to Ovarian Cancer. And the greatest thing I could do for her was to get checked and when I did I found out I needed a hystrectomy. I had my colon tested a week ago also. It is always a wonderful thing to give to any fund.  Cancer has touched all our lives in some way. If you feel that is what you want to do then give, in the name of anyone that has touched your live that died from this horrible killer.

I had to go shopping today, High School reunion Saturday night. I am addicted to shopping, so I shopped for 2 hours and at the check out line it hit me like a brick. My friend Craig isn't here anymore. I miss him alot.

It's better than the alternative.  We women certainly do not enjoy the annual or bi-annual squish-squish-damn-that-hurts mammogram but it beats the hell out of getting breast cancer.

Dear Friends:

I am writing with the information for the organization that I have named as the recipient of any donations that people would like to make in remembrance of Craig Hamrick.  Craig and I adopted our first cat Buster in September 2003 from the Brooklyn Shelter and Adoption Center that is part of New York City Animal Care & Control, Inc.  I think it's only fitting that donations should go to this organization, as Buster (and later his brother Dusty) provided Craig with comfort and companionship during his illness, and both cats are now providing me with the same in the wake of Craig's recent passing.

Animal Care & Control is a nonprofit organization (501(c)(3)), and all donations are tax deductible in accordance with IRS guidelines.  Your contributions will help to:
* Care for and find loving homes for homeless pets
* Offer low-cost spay/neutering services for all adopted pets
* Rescue injured or abused animals
* Advocate on behalf of animal welfare

To make a contribution, please send your donation and indicate that it is in memory of CRAIG HAMRICK to the following address:

Development Department
New York City Animal Care & Control
11 Park Place, Suite 805
New York, NY 10007

Thank you in advance for helping to make a difference in the lives of animals here in New York City, and for helping to keep Craig's memory alive by contributing to a cause that he truly believed in.

With much warmth and thanks,

joe salvatore

I am glad Joe posted the memorial donation information for Craig, but ironically, a friend of mine was collecting for a worthwhile cancer charity her son was doing a fundraiser for, so I gave her more than I normally would in a sense in memory of Craig and everyone else I know who has been stricken by this awful disease, so I feel good about doing that...

Shadowgram has the wrong information posted in it. It isn't the ASPCA that donations should be sent to, it is the animal shelter Joe posted here.  Shadow gram dosen't always print the right information and maybe they should also wait to be contacted about things before they print them.

Rats: "This video has been removed by the user."  That's the message I got when I clicked the link at about 11:45 p.m. PDT.   ::)

Title: Gay TV News Show Notes Passing of Craig Hamrick
Post by: David on October 06, 2006, 04:42:02 PM
Gay USA, a gay/lesbian news show, has run for 20 years on Manhattan Neighborhood Network, NYC's community access channel.
Since 2003, the satellite channel Free Speech TV has carried the show into millions of homes in all 50 states.
Gay USA's audio can also be downloaded at iTunes.

On this week's show, Gay USA noted the passing of Craig Hamrick, whom they called a respected book editor and photographer. Dark Shadows Online was also mentioned in passing.

The episode will re~air tonite on Free Speech, channel 9415 on Dish Network.
I'll tape it & send it to Midnite so the video can be posted here.

That is so wonderful of them to do that for him. I haven't seen it and would love to. I don't get that channel.

Hey Janet:
it was only a 30 second mention, but if you/John/Joe want to get a tape of it, send me a PM.
I thought it was wonderful as well.
Craig sure did make an impact.

You can hear it, audio only, at iTunes.
My low tech sysrem will not allow me into iTunes.
Midnite checked the iTunes Gay USA page.
This show is not there yet, but it should be up soon.

How is Joe doing?

The audio is already online here (http://web.mac.com/depeche7/iWeb/Site/Podcast/DF9685C8-81A0-4A86-BE16-3A15CF123C0D.html). It's about halfway through the podcast.  :)

Ah, thank you, MsC!  It must've been archived right after I went to bed.   ::)

Quicktime is needed, btw.

P.S.  If you stick around for another minute or so of the podcast, you'll hear a Daily Show clip in which Jon Stewart riffs on an issue that's not unrelated to one raised in the current ShadowGram topic.

I just read at Craig's imdb page that the Feb 1980 issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland had been dedicated to him!
I never knew that!

It seems he was Forry Ackerman's volunteer assistant at a horror con & did a fabulous job.

Craig's legacy just grows & grows......

I hope John doesn't mind my stepping in and mentioning this since several folks were eager to see the video but the original link didn't work. You can find it here:

I stumbled across it while I was looking at DS vids on You Tube.

Gay South Florida, a Miami Herald blog by Steve Rothaus, did a piece on Craig Hamrick on October 4. It includes a few comments from Lara Parker.

When I exchanged emails with Craig in July, we talked a bit about his revised edition of "Barnabas & Co.". He said he hoped to have it out in September. Does anyone know the status of the book? I told him I'd buy it the second it came out, and I kinda want to keep that promise.

I really wanted to ask him about that at the fest but every time I saw him he had people surrounding him. I sure hope someone can get it to the press!

The post card type advertisement they were handing out at the fest regarding the updated version states that it is being published by iUniverse, and that it will be made available on Amazon.com after October 15, 2006, which was Sunday! So I'd look for it there, or visit iUniverse's website.

I hope you're able to find it.

I think, for obvious reasons, the book's publication will be delayed.  But my understanding is that someone will finish it for Craig, because he'd want it to be finished, just not sure by who or when.
