Title: 1968
Post by: Maria_Merriweather on April 27, 2002, 03:21:46 PM
Finally on Monday we get back to 1968!  It seems strange now to think of all the events that were going on in the real world during the 1st airing of DS. 1968 was a turbulent year.  That year I was watching this as a 7th grader.  It is still my favorite escapist enjoyment.

Hello MM.....Welcome aboard!!

You're not alone in waiting for Mr. Loomis to return from his "attitude adjustment"!!  So am I.....and another poster named Carol.....and I know there are others...but I can't think of names this early in the morning.   ?!?

I was a 9th-grader in the spring of '68, with an older brother in Vietnam....turbulence is the perfect word for those times!!  I guess worrying about the tribulations of Willie Loomis WAS a good escape from the "real world". :)

You're going to love this forum.....sometimes we're serious, but most of the time we're NOT!  Some of us are down-right hilarious, but mostly, we're just nice folks who happen to be a bit ditzy over DS!  :o

Never hesitate to ask questions, by the way, because the Omnipotent Ones, Midnite and Mysterious Benefactor, know all,....and always share the answers!! ;)

Rainey

Thanks for the welcome Raineypark.  I have been lurking on this forum since January when I first got my computer.  I finally decided to jump in.  I love this board!   Midnite and MB do a great job.

What in the world took you so long to become a member, if you don't mind my asking?  Have you posted here before?  I've brought this up a couple of times on other threads....why do people read this stuff and not add their own 2 cents?  It's not like we're going to yell at you!!  [lghy]

I'm just glad another fan of Willie's showed up!  ;D

Raineypark, I've never posted on this board before--just
enjoyed reading the posts.  I don't really have an excuse--it just took me a while to make the decision.

I often think about what a turbulent time 1968 was. I glad I was only a child and didn't think it too scary that the world seem to be going to heck. I give my parents credit for holding it together during those times.

I was only 4 years old in the spring of 1968, so I remember only bits and pieces of that time period, Dark Shadows being one of them. My dad was in the Vietnam War before that, he was in the first part of it. Welcome MM! Glad you came out of the lurk mode and decided to join in. I hope others will do the same. I'm not a big fan of his but I do like Willie Loomis. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Harry Johnson at Collinwood. I like Willie Loomis the best of John Karlen's Dark Shadows roles, next would be Desmond Collins. I enjoy seeing John Karlen at the Dark Shadows Festival. He always has good things to say and he is funny! At a banquet, he was sitting right behind me at the other table, and his table was really going. They were the life of the party! Finally I leaned back and said to him, "You're having way too much fun!" He said to me, "Honey, that's just what I'm here for!" You gotta meet him in person.

I was in fifth grade when DS returned to 1968.  Every day, after school (Sr. Mary James was my teacher), I and my best friend would run to his house to watch DS.  We had the place to ourselves because both his parents worked, something exceedingly rare in those days.  They also left the house unlocked the whole day when no one was there, something else that was quite common back then but unheard of today, unless one wants his or her furniture removed without their permission.  So we would watch DS.  I so clearly remember the Adam storyline, especially

his abuduction of Carolyn.  When the show ended at three-thirty, I and my best friend would find his older brother's well-hidden stash of Playboy's and other porno and then hide ourselves in the closet and look the stuff over.  Of course, we never told Sr. Mary James about that.  I don't think she would've known what that was anyway.

Welcome Maria M!!  So glad you've joined in.

I kind of have mixed feelings about the return to 1968.  1795 is so good, and especially all that's been happening and the performances that we've been seeing in recent days.  I've just been "luxuriating" in it and it seems a shame for it to end.

I've told before that many years ago, one of our independent stations was showing it from the coming of Barnabas until way into 1795.  Then, they took it off.  They said it was the most requested show they had had, and so promised to bring it back soon.  Well, they never did.  I had always felt that they could have at least waited until the conclusion of 1795.

Well, when I did finally get to see that part, I discovered that there was a good bit more to happen in 1795 than I had anticipated, and that they weren't so close to the end afterall.

But then--remember the tense situation we left them in at the present day seance.  So, the instant this ends, there isn't a chance to feel even a moment's sense of completion, but we're immediately plunged into the follow-up and all is quite exciting for a while now.

Welcome Maria M! :) It's nice to have you here.
I was 7 years old in 1968 so I really don't remember way too much about what was happening back then. I do remember running home from school along with my three sisters just to watch DS!! Both my parents worked and my older sisters would invite their friends in as well to watch the show. We'd get out the chips and sit there just like we were at the movies, no one said a word & we were all mesmorized!  Im looking forward to seeing Willie's return also, along with a few others as well!  ;)

no, I am not a big fan of ice skating.  I looked through

Hi Daphne! WOW! You're still a "young um!" Hey, I think that's great that you enjoy the show so much! My youngest daughter is 16 and hasn't shown even a slight interest in it. Same goes for my older one as well!  It must be nice watching it for the first time! Sorry though, that you had to read a few spoilers. Most of us will put a "spoiler warning" on our messages, this way when you see that, you can just avoid reading that message. And don't fret about living in the past, believe me, the 60 & 70's weren't all that great. We use to say we wanted to live in the 50's. I guess no one is happy. Just live your life for today and be happy!  :)

At the last couple of Dark Shadows Festivals, I noticed there are a growing number of teenage fans. That's too bad Carol that your daughters don't enjoy Dark Shadows like you do. My daughter is going on 6 years old and she has been watching Dark Shadows since she was 2. Just today she said to me, "Mommy I want to watch Dark Shadows!" We put on the MPI tape, continuing where the Sci Fi Channel left off on Friday. I watched Dark Shadows with my Mom when I was her age and younger. It is neat having 3 generations of fans in the family. My Mom is coming next weekend for a visit, to be here for my birthday, and Mother's Day. During her visits, it's always fun when we watch Dark Shadows together. My daughter is right there with us watching just as I did at her age. My Mom has always been a Barnabas Collins fan. You all know who I love. My daughter likes the werewolf, lol!, also the child actors. She has her own little Dark Shadows collection of pictures from the show, and the Barnabas Collins board game from 1969. She makes grandma play it with her when she comes over. They put the skeletons together and take them in her closet and watch them glow in the dark. I'm lucky to have a Dark Shadows enthusiast like I was. She hopes to attend a Dark Shadows Festival someday. She's still a little too young. I stay in a chair in the Main Room for 5 hours at a time. If you leave your seat, forget it it's gone! Most of the time, the room is full, people are sittting on the floor in the front,  the walls are all lined with people, and there's a line of people at the microphone.  Daphne, having grown up with Dark Shadows, I can't imagine what it's like just getting into it now all these years later. My heart throb Craig Slocum died when I was 14 years old. At least I was on the earth while he was alive. The thought of not even being born, now that's scary, lol! I wonder who my daughter will fall for. You just might see her around someday, the up and coming!

Maria we just met a fan named Maaaaaria! Oh, sorry a little early for musical theater.  Welcome Maria and count me (another 7th grader circa 1968 [peace]) among the avid Willie watchers.  One of my favs (note old 16Mag lingo) of all the characters on DS (Willie 2 only of course) and Karlen was certainly one of the best actors on the show.  Sure do miss him when he's gone!  :'(

Hi Cheryl, That's great your little daughter watches the show along with you! Funny thing is, my 16 stayed home from school today because she wasn't feeling well, and ACTUALLY sat down and watched the show with me!! She kind of liked it, although, I doubt she'll become a big fan. ::) Anyway, My parents do enjoy the show (both are 80) and I tape it for them. Since they live right downstairs from me, I usually watch it along with them. They both love it!!  :)

LOL I'm obsessed with almost everything from the 60s and 70s. My friends, parents, relatives, etc..all think I'm insane *shrugs* LOL I don't mind. I try and avoid the spoilers, but the temptation is just toooo much somtimes! I read that Naomi committed suicide like....3 days b4 it happened in this book I have [KLS's Memory Book]. I was soooooo mad!!!  >:( LOL I've gotten some of my friends 2 watch it w me, but mostly they just watch ME watching it, and I'm, of course, bouncing up and down on my bed, screaming at the top of my lungs...."CAROLYN!!!!!! OOOOOOOO!!!! AHHHHHH BARNABUS NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHH NOOOOOOO EVIL!!!!!!! JULIA!!! AHHH!!!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE CAROLYN AND TONY! Eeeeeeeeeeeeee..." LMAO But I made my friend watch NODS and she got sooooo scared @ the end, she started screaming!!! It was sooooo so so funny!!! And I was just like, "OOOO EVIL ANGELIQUE! GRRRRR TAKING QUENTIN AWAY FROM DAPHNE! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR..." LOL

that's really kewl, tho, that so many teenagers are in2 it. I like it because it has such a ..... diverse ... story line, lol. LOL, it's also impossible 2 explain 2 someone w/o rambling for like 10 minutes. LOL Not that I need any help in the rambling department, which I'm doing now.....
