Post by: Nelson Collins on July 12, 2006, 04:51:29 PM
I think I may have asked this before...

Were holidays and birthdays ever acknowledged?

Were holidays and birthdays ever acknowledged?

Christmas is mentioned in the pre-Barnabas ep when
Laura comes to town, I think she tells someone (or maybe they ask her) she's in town "for the holdays" at the diner.
It's also mentioned during Leviathan, someone (Carolyn?) makes a comment about "early Christmas shopping at Brewster's".

David's is the only birthday I recall being mentioned
during 1897 when they do the 'flash-forward' to 1969 for his supposed last birthday party (it was someone's dream, Jamison's I think, or Julia's vision?  God my memory is just GONE!  I mean, I just watched BOTH these plotlines recently, you'd think I'd remember!
In one of the pre-Barnabas shows Carolyn mentions that kids used to call Liz a witch and play tricks on them on Halloween.  I think that was the only mention of Halloween on the show.

Yes, every day was Halloween in Collinsport until...

One day, Barnabas caught David as he was falling out of a tree, and saved David from breaking his leg, or his neck, or his something.

David, inspired, ran off and lit Julia's cigarette for her, and told her to Pay It Forward.

Julia went and hypnotized Mrs. Johnson so that she would never feel any back pain again, and told Mrs. Johnson to Pay It Forward.

Mrs. Johnson grumbled a lot, but dutifully took her life savings out of the Collinsport National Bank and gave them to Maggie Evans so Maggie could fulfill her lifelong dream of going to Paris.  She told Maggie, "Just Pay It Forward.  Don't ask me why."

Before she left for Paris, Maggie came across Sheriff Patterson, stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire, so she changed his tire for him.  [Why oh why does that sound like a euphemism for something else?]

And so on and so forth, until finally everybody in Collinsport had done a good deed for somebody else, and the next day....

IT SNOWED!  And it was November 1, and no supernatural events ever happened in Collinsport again.

In one of the pre-Barnabas shows Carolyn mentions that kids used to call Liz a witch and play tricks on them on Halloween.  I think that was the only mention of Halloween on the show.

And when asked by Madame Findlay if she'd ever seen a ghost, Amy answers that she once saw someone in a ghost costume on Halloween.  Uh huh.

As for other holidays:

Vicki told David that the first Christmas tree was in Maine.

Roger informs Liz that he came home during holidays from school so he knows more about her marriage to Paul than she thinks.

Frank Garner says that an old list of Collinwood servants' wages looks like a Christmas list for the Waldorf Astoria.

There are 3 references to Christmas at the time of Laura's arrival, seen in December, 1966.  In addition to the one BuzzH mentioned, Joe informs Maggie that he and Carolyn are no longer on each others' Christmas card lists.  And Maggie tells Laura that Roger could pull off the best Scrooge imitation that season.

Also, Charity lies that the brandy Magda smells on her breath is from brandy-filled chocolates that Judith received as a Christmas gift.  And we first saw this in July!

Also from Leviathans: Carolyn reminds David in the antique shop that Christmas and birthdays are coming up; David mentions to Carolyn that Brewster's is open late til Christmas, and that he's thinking about making a list.  It was Nov/Dec 1969.

Julia notices that a photo of Quentin from Christmastime in the 1890s is missing from its album.

PT Quentin received gloves as a Christmas present.

James Forsythe gave the lottery vase to Brutus as a Christmas gift, or something.   :-

Oh please! don't even get me started about that lottery vase...  We laugh EVERY time we see that thing... its just so ugly...  All the paint chipping off...  There was a much nicer urn/vase in the beginning (pre-Barnabus - 1st 10 episodes or so) in the drawing room over by the phone - they should have used that one instead...

Does anyone know the story behind the lottery vase - where it came from, why they used that particular vase, who has it now?

Please let us know!

Good day to you my cousins!

Probably Jim Pierson.  It will no doubt show up at one of the two auctions this Fest, LOL!   ;D

In the 1995 story line Carolyn says she's going to have a birthday party for Tad, and Barnabas finds a birthday card to Tad from Carie.

Arriving back in real time, Carolyn mentions having Quentin build a dollhouse for Carie for her birthday.
