I've posted this several times already, but on this day I was watching something on our ABC affiliate and at the end there was this spooky commercial with spooky music about some show that would be airing next, and even though it was a perfect summer day - having my attention caught - I watched it.  And then the next day, and the next, for the following five years.

"My name is Victoria Winters. My journey is beginning. A journey that I hope will open the doors of life to me and link my past with my future." --Victoria Winters, June 27, 1966

Sixty years ago today, the face of daytime TV changed when ABC-TV premiered the first episode of Dark Shadows, a gothic soap opera about a young woman traveling to a remote house to be the governess of a troubled boy. We saw Victoria Winters for the very first time in the opening. She's sitting on a train, deep in thought, and we hear her voiceover narration that sets up the story for us. Little did anyone know that less than a year later, a new character would appear, a vampire, and the series would become a television legend. I discovered Dark Shadows a few months after the arrival of Barnabas Collins. I was seven years old. From that day forward until the series was canceled in 1971, I didn't miss a single episode. I credit Dark Shadows as one of the biggest influences on my future career in the entertainment industry. Happy 60th Birthday Dark Shadows!

Missed this anniversary by a few days . . . Sixty years is a long time and really something to reflect on . . . a different era and so many no longer with us from that time . . . Thanks to this forum for keeping discussions and information about this show alive for, what is it, almost half as long?

Those of us from the generation that watched DS when it first ran also share memories of the Bicentennial only a few years later. That, too, was so much a part of our lives in a way that the current 250 celebration does not begin to touch.
