Title: A Nearby "Collinwood"
Post by: Josette on May 13, 2025, 06:28:07 AM
On Facebook I came across a post from a local TV station news about a mansion in the vicinity that’s for sale for almost $4 million.  Part of it looks a bit like Collinwood.  I don’t know if I can post pictures here, but they call it Castle Bristlecone, so Google it and you’ll see.

In the comments on the post, one person said: “It’s the Collinwood of SW PA!”  (No one reacted to that.)

And when looking it up, I came across an article which said, “Castle Bristlecone was inspired, in part, by Seaview Terrace, also known as the Carey Mansion in Newport, R.I., and design elements are pulled from British and French architecture in the Châteauesque style.”

So, it really is “our” Collinwood!

It also looks like Collinwood from the '12 movie, where the tower was in the center of the house.

With the exceptions of the part that connects the left side of the house to the right side, chimneys in different spots or missing altogether, and windows in places where there either are none or ones of a different type, it's very much like Seaview Terrace.

Thanks for sharing, Josette.  [easter_smiley]

Oh my gosh, you aren't kidding, Josette! Did you say that this house is near where you live? Were you aware of it before? I wonder what they mean about it having been "inspired" by Seaview Terrace  -- what was the architect's connection with Seaview and how did he (assuming "he") know about Seaview Terrace? Assuming this was the front of the house, it's strangely reversed (terrace in front) from Seaview.

(As an aside of interest to no one - I recently discovered a family connection to Pennsylvania, which was a total surprise - a previously unknown great-grandfather found via research plus DNA matching with descendants.)

M.B. will you ever explain your comment about how the MPI snow globe Collinwood so significantly departs from the actual mansion?

Philippe, No, I had never heard of it.  It's a distance from me in an area I'm not too familiar with.  But it's in the same county, so it's not too far.  I looked it up to see just where it is, and I have been on some of the major roads nearby.  I'm hoping at some point to drive by.
