Title: Episode #714
Post by: Ian on March 21, 2006, 08:29:47 AM
It was the first episode I ever saw, and what a doozy to see, eh? No wonder why I was instantly hooked! All the actors were right at the top of their game in this. I especially adored Joan Bennett's performance in this particular episode. :)

i agree it was an awsome episode.when the four 1897 collins siblings are together it's a real blast.

another episode featured in yesterday's slide show #191 when the fishing shack goes up in flames is another personal favorite.it was one of those episodes that gave me goosebumps.i read somewhere that that was one of the hardest scenes ever on the show to film.something about it requiring a three camera set-up or something to that affect.

#714 set the tone for some of the most scintillating writing on DS.  At this point, each episode took on the tone of a well written one-act play.  The theatricality and pacing of the dialogue was superior, entertaining, and extremely relevant to the story.  The pacing of DS definately was outstripping the other soaps of the day, which tended to plod along at a glacial pace.  Sure, this pacing was established in '68 to some degree, but the wit and intelligence of the dialogue was reaching its peak with early 1897 for sure.  I remember being very impressed, even as a youngster.

My tapes begin with
Tim Shaw saving the kids from the fire.
How much of 1897 am I missing?   A percentage would be appreciated.

That would be episode #736. Well...1897 starts at #701, and it ends at #885. Therefore....19%. :)

Thanks Ian.   Somehow I was hoping there was far more of 1897 I have yet to see, like half, maybe.   Anyone, where does the point come where the end was intended to be originally, where they then decided to extend it?

I agree.

The famous will scene is one of the best in the show in terms of characters and their interactions. It was pure gold.
