Title: Has DS ever influenced what YOU wear?
Post by: AndreDuPres on February 25, 2006, 06:15:20 PM
I was reading that groovy Sebastian Shaw thread and was wondering if anyone here styled him or herself in the fashions of DS.  I confess I have...no, I didn't buy myself a pair of leather pants or a hideous fur coat, but I did get an ascot recently.

I always admired young David Collins' Nehru jacket (he was sporting it around '68, right around the time stepmama Cassandra showed up) and if I ever see one in a thrift store (that fits me), I'll snatch it up.

Don't know if this counts, but I used to wear a Barnabas ring on the appropriate finger.  Actually, I had 2 of them; the cheap plastic one looked almost identical to his, and the other one was a more expensive one with a flat, lighter-colored black stone.

As I alluded to earlier, I piecked out my last 3 or 4 suits with influence by DS. I got a kind of olive toned suit that matched the colors of one of Barnabas/Frid's suits, a houndstooth sport jacket that I thought was very Roger/Burke, and a two blue/gray shaded suits, because I like the colors on Quentin. The later suit was cut a bit like Barnabas's three button suits that have a tighter lapel cut. I realy liked the way Barnabas's suits looked on the show. If I could find one of those silvery gentleman's dressing gowns, I know Diane would be delighted.
When I was a kid, I had a sweater vest that matched exactly one of David Collins, as well as his haircut for my middle school years as well. [happy5]

I have to admit that I went searching for a house coat (Smoking Jacket) like one that Barnabus wears.  It is burgandy velvet with a black lapel and cuffs.  I finally found one on eBay about a year ago.  It is EXACTLY like the one he wears.  I just love it!  It makes me feel all giddy inside to think - "Who knows... it might just be THE jacket..."

I also check eBay on a regular basis for "Orbach's" items and have been known to buy a few things, such as a fluffy hat and a few scarves...  All in fun...

Please! Every time I go to Goodwill, I look for "Roger Collins" Houndstooth or tweed numbers, I own the Barnabas Cane, have owned the Timco ring, I also own a real British inverness jacket, but its more Sherlock Holmes than BC! 8)  I have stayed away from the "Furs by Sebastian" look, however, 'coz the older GIRLS in our school used to wear those back in the day.  And , yes, I admit it, I sometimes scan eBay for "Fashions by Ohrbach's" - The Guy Stuff! (Okay, so I am a little intrigued by lime green frocks and old shocking paisleys, too.) ;D

Oh big time. I can't say any one particular outfit inspired me, just the general era. Not so much anymore, but BIG time a while ago. Though watching these episodes on DVD has really made me want to go shopping in some thrift stores....

Once, when I was 15, I dressed up like Angelique the vampire for Halloween.  I had really long blonde hair and a trip to the sewing machine once or twice, did the white dress.   [_witch_]

Red fingernails, a white pallor face, red lips and some teeth of course, and I was ready to go. [zoom]

I didn't go around getting candy, I just went around scaring kids...it was quite a night.

I know my brother was scared of me...but at 6, he was scared of everything.  He dressed up like a pirate that year.  He was my first 'victim'.

Just as costuming for the most part - I managed to get myself a long, thin white empire-style long-sleeved gown that called to my attention Josette, plus another empire-style black gown with puffed sleeves that I bought for costuming simply because I could see some early 19th century Gothy Collins family lady wearing it.

But I love those layered skirts, vests, blouses, and gypsy bling that Magda wore.  I have some of those elements that I wear out on occasion.   ;D

Wow, thanks, I hadn't even noticed that!  Now I've just got to work my way up to becoming a Senior Poster!  Oh, and about my new ascot:  it's got a nice blue, paisley print design, perfect for DS.  Ha, I'll feel like Roger while wearing it.  Didn't the ghost of Damian Edwards wear one, too?

Congrats AndreDuPres...and yes, Damian Edwards was also wearing one.

Barnabas had one too to hide Angelique's handiwork.

I'm sure you'll look dashing in your ascot, AndreDuPres.  But don't let it out of your sight as Bruno and Desmond did.  ;)

I think I threw out all my headbands after a surfeit of the episodes where seemingly every single DS female character was wearing one or had a bow...

Julia must've been in the past or at Wyndecliffe that day . . .no headbands for the medical professionals. . .

Now, now - we all know that you secretly LOVE all the bows that Vicki and others wear over the course of the show and the only reason you profess to hate them is because you don't want us to suspect the truth.  [bow]  Isn't it about time you finally give up the pretense and admit the truth?

vicki sort of loses the bow after 1795.

she then frequently wears her hair in a ponytail or down completely.this saddened me. :'(

I had two Empire-wasted "granny gowns".  Dressed as Pansy Faye on Halloween 1969 in one of my grandma's old ball gowns and some other junk I threw together.  My best purchase of the period I still have and use--- big black wool cape with a tasselled hood (very warm, one little mothhole.)  I used it once at some DS event but it was too hot, and too heavy to pack for DSFs.  I also had my hair up a lot in imitation of the 1800's episodes, though mostly in braids since my hair can't keep a curl to save my life. [gorgeous]

I think old DS stuff is magically appearing at our local GoodWill. As "haunters" of GW stores know, they usually have a 'vintage clothing" rack.  Mostly old disco dresses, bridesmaid atrocities, and leisure suits, but once I saw Maggie's old quilted skirt (too small for me, or I'd have bought it, as it was in very good condition and looked comfortable as well) and an olive-drab 2-pc. women's suit a'la Julia's typical garb (ditto.)

I bought some few old neckties at the faith home, that inspired some DS wardrobes, I got one plaid hunting jacket, it's blue, also I got some few dress shirts. Plain-front pants, plaid shirts (just similar to a la Sam Evans), knit ties, old records, I used to have few sportcoats, suits that out of my size. Now I got one blue blazer (just like Quentin Collins in PT, and pre-1840, not the plaid jackets). Dress shoes, sweathers, even when I watched the 1795 episodes, I have my hairstyle looked like Lt. Nathan Forbes. Also I have one b&w hounstooth pants, dark-grey pants, etc.

Gotta love fashion and KLS' sexy minishirts that she knows how to show her legs!

Once a bunch of us were in Newport hanging out at the Black Pearl (aka The Blue Whale) and Seaview and in one of the shops on the wharf we saw a green tweed suit that I SWEAR looked like the one Julia wore on the show!

I don't wear anything from DS myself, but it is pretty entertaining watching the show with my mother - who's REALLY into clothes - and listening to her tell about how popular certain styles were back in the '60s.  Like that thick, quilt style dress that Maggie wore ocassionally, some of Cassandra's lime green dresses, etc.

There was a teacher at my high school who wore those quilt skirts, circa 1970.

Actually, she was so tiny the skirt pretty much wore her!  ::)
