Title: Well - who knew that one day an aye-aye would be named after...
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on November 15, 2005, 09:22:41 AM
...our own beloved Angelique? But then, up until a few minutes ago, I had never even heard of an aye-aye.  [lghy]

An excerpt from Duke Primate Center welcomes Angelique (http://www.herald-sun.com/durham/4-668128.html):

Most of the center's 21 aye-ayes are named after characters with sinister or occult connotations; Angelique was a character in the "Dark Shadows" soap opera of the '60s, a "beautiful, evil witch," Gibson said. Such associations seem to come naturally to people upon seeing aye-ayes, who despite their nightmarish appearance are comparatively docile.

If you go to the main page of the site (http://www.herald-sun.com/), you can see a photo of Angelique. What a looker!  ;D

I think "Angelique" is too cute for words!!  Sort of like a stuffed animal designed by Edward Gorey!!  [lghy]

LOL!  That's awesome!  It's amusing that the names of all the aye ayes have "sinister or occult connotations."

"They could bite your finger off if they wanted to," Yoder said."...

Barnabas:  "Then of course, there's Angelique, who despite her relatively docile appearance, is a total nightmare."

Ben:  "Aye!  She'll bite your finger off if she wants to."

I did a search for aye-ayes and found the National Geographic site for kids. It has lots of info on them plus a video. The link to the page with the picture of baby Angelique must be on a different day, because I wasn't able to find the picture. I think the aye-ayes are kind of cute though, they are nocturnal lemusr.
