There has been some comment that "Jane Eyre" influenced DS storylines. Today's photo (7-15-05) on the Forum's homepage made me wonder if "Agnes Grey" by Anne Bronte influenced the early episodes. It's the story of a young woman who wants to go out in the world and earn a living for herself as well as help her poor family. She takes a position with a rich family as governess, only to find the children are horribly behaved and almost impossible to teach. >:D This reminded me of Vicky's relationship with David. I wonder if the writers were influenced by "Agnes Grey" as well as "Jane Eyre". [book2]

Interesting, I haven't read "Agnes Grey," but it could just be the rather general Gothic atmosphere that seems familiar. Although the situation you describe does sound like it has some specific similarities to DS too. Later in the storyline, DS definitely borrows from "The Turn of the Screw", with the troublesome children, ghosts, and the governess.
I don't remember all the "Jane Eyre" parallels other than the mad wife hidden away who sets fire to something. If I'm remembering that correctly, it's definitely straight out of "Jane Eyre."
