Title: Jewelry Part of the Plot
Post by: VAM on April 03, 2002, 03:08:23 AM
Seeing Josette with that ring made me recall other times in the DS Series when a piece of jewelry was important to the plot or storyline. Let's see how many you can remember.

Of course there is the case full of jewlery which was sealed in the basement wall, (Naomi's I think).

Naomi's necklace: This is what Willie was actually after when he accidentally discovered the secret mausoleum room. He had seen her wearing it in a book, and Mrs. Johnson filled his head with tales of a pirate having given it to her.

Josette's Earrings: Willie stole them from the hidden cache of jewels which Barnabas kept hidden - strangely enough - in the wall of his dungeon cell. Willie gave the earrings to Maggie anonymously. Joe was peeved.

Elizabeth's broach: Willie stole it from her, but Jason retrieved it and gave it back to her.

Julia's ring: in 1840 it saved her life when Barnabas saw it on the finger of Laszlo.

Maggie's ring:  After Maggie was kidnapped by Barnabus in the previous storyline, he stashed it in a candleholder in Willie's room so that the sherriff and Sam could find it, seemingly establishing that Willie had been the stalker/kidnapper.
Possible spoiler, but I've got to ask, after Willie was shot so many times outside Maggie's bedroom, and we saw him clinging to dear life in the hospital, were we to assume that he recovered and went to prison?

Julia's alleged heirloom pendant:  She used it on Maggie to make her forget about being kidnapped once Maggie's memory started to return.  Julia also used it unsuccessfully on David to keep him from snooping around the old house and from finding out the truth about Barnabus.

Yes, they patched poor Willie up and sent him off to Windcliffe (a conveniently located mental asylum) for some attitude adjustment. [crazd]

Prison would have been too complicated...how could they explain the release of a kidnapper after so short a period of time?

On the other hand, letting a CRAZY kidnapper out of a madhouse....why no one would question that at all! [twch2]

And just like everybody else who ever worked on this show 'He'll be baaaaack!'

Raineypark, who already has May 14th circled on her calendar!!  ;)

You're very welcome Shadows1....though I never thought I'd see the sentence "It all makes sense now" used in relation to ANYTHING having to do with Dark Shadows!! LOL [lghy]

Beth Chavez's ghost led Barnabas to discover the pentagram necklace buried with the child.

In 1897, Count Petofi gives Quentin a ring that later allows him to switch bodies with him.

How can all forget that big clunky medallion that Angelique gave Barnabas to wear during the duel with Jerimiah?  ::)                                                                                                                                                                SPOILER.......SPOILER......SPOILER........SPOILER........!!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Cassandra kept the poisen hidden in her ring that she used to give her then "husband" a nice long nap.                                                                                                                                                                              During the Adam storyline, Professor Stokes gave Barnabas an amulet that protected against witchcraft. Barnabas then gave the amulet to Dr. Lang to use for his own protection against witches.                                                                                                                                                                       Magda used a five point medallion to ward off being attacked by the werewolf during 1897.

There was Victoria Winter's charm bracelet. Also, there was that watch fob that Angelique used to try and identify if Gerard was possessed by Judah Zachery.

Isn't there a piece of jewelry used when Angelique threatens Quentin in 1897 to return with her to Collinwood instead of leaving to meet Amanda Harris at the train station?

Based on the way Magda clinked and clanked I would say Grayson pretty much cleaned out the DS costume jewelry stash just about every day during that storyline.  Our favorite gypsy queen probably had about 40 pounds of miscellaneous pieces jangling around at any given time! [king]

Maybe Magda (Grayson) was Mr. T's inspiration??

How could I have forgotten the Leviathans?  Megan Todd had a Naga locket.  All of the followers carried some form of the insignia to identify themselves. I think Bruno wore a ring, but Aristede carried a medallion until Quentin stole it to help his daughter Lenore.

Just thought of another one. Laura's locket. The one she was wearing around her neck,  that supposidly she was also wearing when she died in the Phoenix fire. ;)

Hi Cassandra,

haven't mentioned yet how much I love your handle.  Cassandra is my favorite Lara Parker character on the show, and one of my all time favorite DS characters, period.  I love her clothes, her wigs, her look, the way she swings wildly between smug complacency and rampant hysteria. She's such fun.

The 'five point medallion" Magda and Beth used to protect themselves from the werewolf attack is called a Pentagram.  It is very ancient.  Members of an ancient Greek society called the Pythagoreans (after the philosopher Pythagoras) first used it.  The standard explanation is that the five points of the star represent the 4 elements harmoniously interacting with human beings to produce a dynamic balance in the Universe.  There are several esoteric explanations behind the use of the five pointed star by modern day Pagans and Witches.  Unfortunately, a lot of people think of Satanism when they see the Pentagram.

Sorry for nattering on,

Steve

Hi Gothick, (Steve) Thanks for the info on the 5 point medallion.  :)  I have read up some on the subject because it does facinate me. I remember reading the myths also. It was the belief that if the star of the pentagram was pointing upwards, it was considered a good sign, therefore protecting you from harm. Facing downward, however, was considered to be a sign of satanism.                                                                           Glad you also like Cassandra. I thought she looked pretty cool in the black wig. She looked good in any hairstyle, but this was a nice change for her. ;)

In parallel time Roxanne used RT Julia's brooch to find out where PT Angelique had stashed her.  :)

Hi Cassandra, glad you share my appreciation of Cassandra Collins!  She's such a fun character.

As for the pentagram, you are correct that Satanists use the "upside down" star (2 points up, 3 down) because that is an ancient sign of the Horned God.  If you look at the star the right way, it resembles a goat's head with the "bottom" two points are upright.

Witches and Pagans today in certain traditions still use the "upside down" star when working with the Horned God or other Sacred Masculiine energies.  The association with Satan or the Devil is a perverted form of Christianity (i. e. Satanism) which has nothing to do with pagan traditions.  It is similar to the svastika which is a powerful symbol for goodness that was perverted by Hitler ... most now will not touch it, and that's a shame.

Didn't Will Shakespeare have a line about "the evil that  men do lives on after them ... the good is oft interred"?  Ah well.

This was a good topic.  I had forgotten how frequently jewellry figures in the plots of DS. There are many more instances not yet mentioned.  PT Angelique used Maggie's pearls to enchant her.  In 1897 our own Angelique used a "jewel of antiquity" in a spell to take over the mind of Gregory Trask.    Magda took a garnet brooch from Rachel Drummond to try and raise money to help her get out of Collinsport.  So many other instances.  Mrs. Stoddard in PT with her hatpins.
