Sad to report his death. A terrible loss for all Dark Shadows fans.

I'm sorry to hear that. For the past few days, I've been watching the early episodes when he first assumed the role of Burke and was just wondering about him. And now he's gone. :'(
-
:'( I'm very sad to hear that.
-
Very sad, indeed. He took on a difficult assignment, becoming the "new" Burke Devlin. His style was completely different from Mitch Ryan's. Ryan's portrayal was more gruff and aggressive; George's more subdued. Some didn't like the transition, especially in the beginning, but most undoubtedly got use to it. However, because of George's more tranquil approach, I think he was a better choice to play Jeremiah, making the character far more sympathetic and thus the circumstances around what happened to Jeremiah more tragic. I couldn't picture Jeremiah and Barnabas being brother-like relatives, with deep affection for each other, if Ryan had played the part. It would seem that their relationship would had to have been more antagonistic.

that is sad news.there are fewer and fewer of the original actors around today. :'(
i too was resistant to a "new" burke devlin when mitch ryan first left the show.i thought he was so identifiable with the role.mr.george put his own spin on it that grew on me.i've often wondered how,or if,mitch would have played jeremiah.if it wasn't for the change in actor perhaps that whole part of the story might have been told differently.and if neither actor had left i wonder what would have become of the character after 1795?the show's plotting changed so greatly during this time i can't picture burke involved in any of the storylines.
-
How sad! I was so hoping he could attend a Fest and meet some of his many fans. :'(
My goodness, I did a double take when I saw his friend's name. But DS' Frank Schofield wasn't a local actor.

Unexpected and very sad news, I had no idea Anthony George was at such an advanced age, he appeared to be much younger.
Not many cared for his portrayal of the "new" Burke although as Jeremiah he was superb.
I can only hope that his life was filled with everything that made him happy... for he has surely left his memory on so many people.

From Stuart site Dark Shadows Journal Online:

* Anthony George: 1921-2005
We were sad to learn of the death of actor ANTHONY GEORGE, who played Burke
Devlin on Dark Shadows. The Binghamton Press &
Sun Bulletin reports that Anthony died on March 16 of a lung condition in
a California hospital. He was 84 years old.
Anthony joined the cast of Dark Shadows in 1967, taking over the role of
Burke Devlin from Mitchell Ryan. He remained on the
show for the next six months, also playing Jeremiah Collins during the 1795
sequence. Visit the site to read obituary

Also, I think he'd be well past 83 by now. And if I'm not mistaken, he died some time ago...
Sad news about Anthony George.
-
Sad.
While I liked Mitch Ryan as Burke, Anthony George worked for me as Burke as well (admittedly a less rough around the edges version of Burke), and I liked his performance as Jeremiah.
-
another great asset to DS gone. He will be missed.
-
Your collage is a beautiful tribute to Anthony George. He will be missed. I really thought he was a fine actor and asset to the show. He really did shine as Jeremiah Collins.

For some reason, when I try to access the obituary, I get an error message. Would it be possible for someone to post the text on the board?
-
I wrote too soon. I was able to access the story.
For anyone else having trouble, you need to click the link for "News" that's on the error page, scroll down, and click the link for Saturday's news. Scroll down that page, and you'll find the link for the article. For whatever reason, I guess the website does not allow linking directly to articles.
-
Thank you for posting the instructions to access Saturday's news. Hopefully this will work, too:

The other link worked all day, I swear. :) They must move articles to the archives after 24 hours.

This is a beautiful collage of AG. WOW!!

I am sorry to hear of the death of Anthony George. :'( I recently saw his first episodes on DS on my tapes. It is weird to see him in the role of Burke Devlin, but I'm sure I will get used to seeing him as I watch more episodes.
It has been YEARS since I saw those episodes. I am waiting to receive the first two DS DVD sets which I ordered last week from deepdiscountdvd.com. ::)
Yes, I agree - that was a GREAT collage! :D Gee, Frank Schofield is still alive, at 83 years old. I did not know that. :)
I also remember Anthony George for his excellent job in his role as Dr. Will Vernon on "One Life to Live". I always thought he was younger - I was surprised to see his age recently when I checked iMDB. He lived a good long life. May he rest in peace. [angl]

Hi,
This is my first post as a member. I was moved to post by the passing Anthony George. It strikes me that we have lost two very important and dear DS actors this year. Time is fleeting and we all need to enjoy every minute of life including cherishing the DS actors we have. I can't wait for the festival and the opportunity to see and appreciate those who have given us so much joy. May Don Briscoe and Anthony George feel all of our love and know the impact they have all made.
-
Hi everyone Anthony George lived here locally in Endicott, NY and i don't live too
far from there at all. He will be missed alot.
Love Anne :'(

This obit was posted late yesterday on a message board. Take from it what you will...

I love the photo of AG. Thanks, Kosmo! :)
This one is brief; it's 3/4 down the page of Entertainment obituaries for March, 2005:
http://www.einsiders.com/features/columns/mar05obituaries.php
It doesn't mention The Untouchables or Checkmate.
Welcome, dsgal1979!

Oh my gosh! My apologies, Stuart. I was hesitant about it because I'm not familiar with the board or the poster, but I didn't recognize it as plagiarized. The link has been removed, and Vera's biography of Anthony George can be accessed through the DS Journal Online (http://www.collinwood.net).
So that makes the photo suspicious too, but it was pretty easy to find because it's the first image that comes up on Google; it's here:

-
No worries Midnite :)
-
Thanks, dear.
The scifilm.org webmaster has since added "From:" followed by a direct link to the biography page on your Journal site.
It would've been nice if the hyperlink had replaced the text in the post instead of following it, but at least it's something. :-

I'm so sad to hear this news. Although Mitch Ryan was wonderful as Burke, I thought Anthony George's scenes with Vicki were much better. He just portrayed Burke as a more sensitive, understanding man, the type of man that Vicki would fall in love with. Sorry but I just can't picture Mitch Ryan's Burke and Vicki being in love. Anthony George had some really good scenes with Jonathan Frid. I thought he worked particulary well with David Henesey, Joan Bennett and Louis Edmonds.
-
Anthony George had some really good scenes with Jonathan Frid.
Frid wrote about about working with AG on his website and expressed only high praise for him. The 3 scenes he described as having given him the happiest memories are all, ironically, opposite him. It's in his intro to Essay #10, accessible through the home page of www.jonathanfrid.com under Tony George's picture. Thanks, Nancy!

Anthony George, 84; Starred in 'Checkmate,' 'Untouchables' (http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-passings27.2mar27,1,4930390.story?coll=la-news-obituaries)
[Free] registration is required. DS is NOT mentioned, yet "The Ten Commandments" is. [angrb]
The print edition includes a photo not seen on the website (not that I can find, anyway). The writeup in the paper also appears next to the obituary for actor Jason Evers, best known in "The Brain That Wouldn't Die," which was filmed in Tarrytown. Of course, that last bit of DS-related trivia didn't make it into the Times either.

The photo was added to the site. :)
There's another published mention of his passing-- in the [new] April 8th ed. of Entertainment Weekly, the news + notes section, p. 19:
"DEATHS ... TV actor Anthony George (The Untouchables), 84, of lung disease, March 16, in L.A."

This is the obit from Variety
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This article was updated on Wednesday, March 30, 2005
Actor Anthony George died March 16 in Newport Beach, Calif. of complications from emphysema. He was 84.
Born Ottavio George in Endicott, N.Y., George began his acting career for Fo, appearing in films including "Where the Sidewalk Engds," "Under My Skin" and "You Never Can Tell."
He starred with Rosalind Russell in the General Electric Theater TV production "The Night Goes On," and went on to appear in TV shows including "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Sea Hunt" and "Death Valley Days."
He had a recurring role as agent Cam Allison in "The Untouchables" and as Don Corey on "Checkmate."
George also toured the country in the musical "Funny Girl" as Fanny Brice's husband.
Moving back to television, he appeared on "Dark Shadows" for two years and then played Dr. Tony Vincente in "Search for Tomorrow" from 1970 to 1975 and Dr. Will Vernon in "One Life to Live" from 1977 to 1984.
He is survived by his partner Robert Watson, two brothers and a sister.
WOW!! I did not know he was gay!! ??? But, come to think of it -- those scenes when Burke kissed Vicki seemed to me to be a little insincere and awkward. I guess it didn't help that Burke had just smoked a cigarette before they kissed. ::) Eww!! Cigarette Breath! :o
The man was an actor....he should have been able to kiss Lassie with passion if that's what the director wanted. What has his sexual orientation got to do with it?
Oh, I'm sorry if I offended you, Raineypark. [signerror] I just thought I was making light of the situation. He WAS a very good actor, [clap] and his sexual orientation indeed has NOTHING to do with it! ;)
I have been watching those episodes lately, and noticed the smoking. I know I used to hate "smoker's breath" when I kissed someone who smoked. ::) I certainly am glad my husband does NOT smoke!! :D
My thoughts exactley. Sexual orientation should have nothing to do performance in any sense. Though I take no offense to other opinions. I actually thought he was kinda sexy and liked his sexual stuff (if you can call it that for daytime 60'ish live TV)
Anthony George had a nice, dignified and gentle quality and that's why I'm peeved Jeremiah was so dehumanized when he came the "ghost of Jeremiah". The character deserved better.
I thought this, too. The writers seemed to hint at a budding romance between Vicki and Jeremiah. They had several good scenes together. Jeremiah's role seemed to have been sped up and eliminated.
-
I wouldn't have minded seeing a Victoria/Jeremiah romance had George stayed on DS (I would've enjoyed that far more than Peter and Victoria).
I agree about Jeremiah's ghost.
I received permission to share this website. The woman created a wonderful tribute to Anthony George with a video:
and then find:
"A Time for Us"
a tribute to Anthony George (Burke Devlin/Jeremiah Collins)
Glad you enjoyed the Quentin vid as well. Thanks for changing the font color, didn't realize it was going to post on a blue background. :)
Melanie!! Welcome to the board! [wave] I'm glad you found this board. You do great work. Keep it up, it can only get better. ;D
-
I agree with Rainey about an actor's sexual orientation. That should have nothing at all to do with love scenes. I think that on DS, the problem between Tony and Alexandra Moltke was Ms. Moltke's inexperience with doing love scenes. Tony and Mary Stuart on Search for Tomorrow kept things steamy in Henderson for five years.
-
We should be thankful for Mr. George for taking over the role of Burke after Mitch Ryan's drinking got the better of him. (The good news is that Mr. Ryan licked his alcoholism in the 70s, and has had a stellar career since) True, his characterization of Burke may not have been as intense as Ryan's but he did a credible job and created the role of Jeremiah Collins on his own. I don't care who he slept with, I only cared that he gave a good performance!
-
Anthony George was my favorite actor-period. I followed his performances from DS to Search for Tomorrow to One Life To Live. I think that he was even more talented than he was given credit for.
It is always a difficult job to replace another actor who was identified by that role.
-
I had missed this thread. I am sadden to hear such a good actor has passed.
