Victoria Winters is my choice. I felt she had a special repoire with David. She had a hard time with him in the beginning, and after a not so good start, the two of them became very close. I liked how she risked her own neck in order to save him from his terrible & evil mother.  >:(  I also felt she had the patience of a saint. He treated her so badly at first, locking her in the west wing, trying to scare her half to death,etc...  And still, she was there for him. They also had a special onscreen bond together as well.  :)

I have to vote for Victoria Winters.  Having persevered through David's initial behavior towards her, and eventually winning him over, she deserves an award!

Victoria Winters also gets my vote. Like others have mentioned, David really gave her a hard time. Most people probably would've quit, but not Victoria. And then she even made a strong bond with him. I remember when I first tuned in she didn't want to leave David alone because he needed her. She also faced some stuff from the other Collins originally though that went away very fast. She's the only Timetraveling governess I know of, other then Daphne Harridge, but Daphne was dead when she was in current time. And didn't Victoria stand up to Burke back in the Mitchell Ryan days over his thing with the Collins?

Daphne, Maggie, & Rachel Drummond I haven't seen as governesses yet, but I don't think my mind will change. Having a future Charlie's Angel as governess must've been cool though.  ;)

Well, it's obvious who I would vote for.  Of course, Rachel Drummond would come in a very close second.  She so reminds me of my first obvious vote.

I guess I'm another Vicki vote.  I havn't seen any episodes past this point, but I get the feeling that the show is done taking the whole governess thing seriously.  I think someone mentioned that Vicki and David didnt even have any more scenes together some time ago.  As stated, her resume is quite impressive, and, hey, shes Vicki.

"You've got to believe me!"

That's right TLATKLS played two of the characters nominated  ;)-Talk about having the advantage... ::)

Before the arrival of Barnabas, she gets my vote.  She's the only one who actually ever seemed to teach.  As the others have posted; Vicki did her best to connect with her charge and help him.  After Barnabas, and I think the kids would have had a better chance of learning anything by trying to sleep with a book under their pillows  ;)

Maggie Evans--the woman was a waitress for God's sake.  I don't care if she had some college classes; I can't believe she had a degree and if my kid or nephew was destined to inherit a large fortune and business, I would not be entrusting his education to someone like her.  Sorry, Ringo and the other members of the TLATKLS club ::)

Daphne Harridge--well, she never actually seemed to do anything.  She came to the job with quite a different agenda and her motivations aside, that hardly qualifies her :)  If the kids liked her, it was probably because she never had them actually studying.

Hortense Smiley and Phyllis Wick--don't remember Hortense and as for Phyllis, not enough data.

Rachel Drummond--let me put it this way.  She's a definite contender for Worst Governess of the Year.  Not sure what criteria Vam had in mind, but I'm guessing a brain is one of them.   ;D

Vicki is the only one of all of them who ever behaved like a governess, so she gets my vote.  I do feel sorry for Rachel whenever I watch those episodes.  I think she was a nice enough girl, but to describe her as uninformed would be a charitable act.  I know I would have packed my bags the first time Judith had that "little talk" about how "all hell breaks loose here every night, but we DON'T say anything about it!"

Vam, you're a librarian too??? We should start a club!

Best,

Steve

Yes, I am a librarian and the idea of a club is neat.
We can call it "Shadows in the Stacks" or "Books and Bats"-What do you think?

Well, I'm not really a librarian, just a bib assistant--I do provisional records (all encoding level a) when I'm not migrating stuff out of OCLC, RLIN etc. and most of my time is spent doing orders and receipts.  So I'll be in the servants' quarters, obviously.

I bet there's a slew of biblio-related workers here, though, and it would be fun to have an honorary association.  I kind of like Shadows in the stacks.  It sounds appropriately ominous.

Cheers,

Steve

There is also HappyBat and Luciaphil (a future librarian). If there are others out there, please do speak up.

SHADOWS IN THE STACKS is a great name for the librarians amongst us. I'm at LAPL in Los Angeles (Literature and Fiction Dept. of course). Where are you?

Bette
PS: to keep in line with the topic, I'll vote for Vicky for Governess of the Year

Great job you have Bette. I am an Approval Plan Manager for a large book distributor on the East Coast. I select health/science books for hospitals and medical school  library collections according to their profile. However, I have worked in every type of library  (academic,  public, and special)during my career. I specialized  in reference service. I enjoy helping people find information.

Bette darling, How could I have forgotten that you are also working amongst the stacks (or the ref room, to be more accurate)???  I guess it's because you were so regal and charming when I met you, I think of you more in a job like "Mistress of Collinwood" than "Ruler of the Ref Room"!

Anybody else here ever find those OCLC records for some of the MPI videos?  I guess some might consider them not worthy of mention, but I think they're a hoot!

Victoria Winters also gets my vote!  She had to put up with the demon seed child and was largely responsible for turning him into a rather likeable kid.  Had I been VW, I would have run out to buy duct tape to keep this kid strapped to his chair...and that is why I could never be a teacher.  Oh, woo.
It is no small wonder to find out that Vam, Gothick, HappyBat, Luciaphil, and Bette are librarians.  Some of the smartest postings come from the "Shadows in the Stack" gang!  When you read the postings, you get a sense of what the people must be like.  I very much look forward to meeting you all and as many other site members as I can.  Thank you for making this site my most very favorite website.

I'm not sure any of them  actually worked as a governess they were all too busy elsewhere but I pick Maggie Evans only because i wanted to be her(not Marcia Brady) when i was a teen and loved her groovy outfits the best I did like Vicki's hair though so it was a close one 8)

Thanks for the compliment Steve, but I really feel more like Mrs. Johnson, just trying to keep the place running while everyone else goes on about their sometimes crazy business.  ;D

Sounds like an interesting job. We have started to use a sort of profiling in ordering for our subject departments. I do have to agree though that helping people find information is the most rewarding part of the job. Since my department has the books on TV I get especially excited when people ask about Dark Shadows books or other info, and believe it or not, after all this time people do still ask.  :)

Did both of the recent novels (Lara's and Mark's) have good circulation statistics? Just curious....

Vicki Winters hands down. She was so cool with, "the little monster" even when he was at his worst.

Now from the construction workers perspective, she was the kind of lady that makes me wish I could go back to school and learn all those things that I couldnt appreciate then!

I'll let it go there.

Lara's book did not have a huge circulation considering how many people there are in LA. Unfortunately Mark's book was barcoded as "generic paperback" so there is no way of gathering circulation stats on it.  :-/

Steve,

You intrigue me.  Almost enough to make me explore OCLC in the lab tomorrow.
