Title: Forum Style Question

I know I should know this one...but..on a given board, left side, there's a silver/grayish 'piece of paper', and left of that, an item: sometimes, it's a 'manilla folder', other times, another grayish ?thing?.

It doesn't look like it's per views, so, why the differential?

The icons in that first column are described at the bottom of every board. The ones in the second column are the Message icons that are selectable every time you make a new post.
