This subject may have been already done before and if it has sorry about over looking it.
I was watching some of the DS episodes that involved Nicholas Blair and Julia Hoffman and I thought they would have made an interesting couple.
Not to say I wanted the Julia/Barnabas storyline to end now...
But it would have been kind of interesting to see Barnabas' reaction to someone luring her away from him.
In the scenes I saw Grayson Hall and Humbert Allen Astredo in... To me they had some interesting on screen chemistry.
I think they would have been interesting to watch together in a complex story that revolved around them.

An interesting love interest for Julia....
Mr. Quentin J. Collins.
I rest my case. (Not that I made a case, mind you)
;D
PS Actually, I can see lots of possibilities for Julia. Grayson seems to have had great chemistry with just about everyone IMHO.
-
If they would've really given Julia a serious love interest, I kind of like the idea of Roger and Julia...I'm not sure why.
-
Julia and Professor Stokes. Definitely. They're both brilliant. They're both interested in the supernatural (Julia from a scientific perpective and Stokes from an occult one), and after Barnabas, Stokes is probably her closest friend. I'm pretty sure Stokes felt more than friendship towards Julia.
~Penny Dreadful~
-
Actually, I think Stokes and Julia make a far better pairing than Barnabas and Julia. I think Barn has too much "baggage"...heck he has whole STEAMER trunks FULL of baggage.... Julia shouldn't have to deal with that. Plus, I think Barnabas takes her for granted sometimes. Stokes and Julia just strike me as a great couple.
-
I think Hall and Astredo had some definite zip in their scenes together. There's Roger. That could have worked, I think. I always feel a little disappointed that Julia and Jason never had any scenes together. That might have had some potential too.
-
unfortunatley they didn't seem to want to develop the julia character outside of barnabas.at first she opposes what b's up to,then she becomes his complete ally.but always within his context.
for heaven's sake she didn't even have her own house. :P
-
Professor Stokes and Julia would have made a very cute couple [book_study] [book2] although I believe no one was more in love with Julia than Barnabas no matter how much he tried to hide his feelings... [a2a3] on the other hand I could imagine Julia being swept off her feet by none other than Willie Loomis [love7]
-
Well, I'm normally an unapologetic ^-^ *B&J NUT* (I believe that Julia was in love with the B-man, and in the end he had feelings for her as well) but... if we must speculate... ;D

Never was a big Julia/Barnabas fan. It seems they were always trying to "romanticize" every Barnabas female relationship and I'm surprised they didn't have Mrs. Stoddard fall in love with him too. Was there any woman on the show not getting in on (mentally anyway) or "linked" with Barnabas in some manner? This constant Barnabas pairing turned me off to later Dark Shadows tapes.
But, steering off the subject....I would have gone more with a Dr. Woodard/Julia Hoffman romance. They were both doctors, I really liked the actor - Robert Gerringer [spoiler](I guess he got killed off by Barnabas though I don't have that tape).[/spoiler]It would have made perfect sense - romance while trying to help Barnabas ... and left Barnabas with Josette's memory or back to 1795.
-
Call me crazy but I think Julia would have been better off with a man younger than herself. I know a lot of us like the Julia/Barnabas scenario but that might be because we never got to see it and there was always that "thing" there.
But...after careful consideration, I think she would have ended up disappointed and gone searching for greener pastures.
Actually, I was looking at an episode or two with Chris Jennings and all I can say is, I think Julia REALLY wanted him. She can't seem to keep her hands off of him. Wish I had the Julia/Tom episodes and more Julia/Chris ones.
:-
Ya know, I dropped a hint this past December that it would be nice to have the DVD with the Tom the vampire episodes but no one around here (read the darling daughter) picked up on it. Maybe next time I shouldn't be so subtle. (Just hold a gun to her head....."Get me the Tom the vampire episodes or you can do your OWN laundry from now on!!!!")
-
I always also thought that Julia and either Nicholas or Roger would make an interesting couple.

Well Grayson and Don B did have some chemistry a la the Tom Jennings feasting episodes and right before the Leviathan stuff. . .when they come back from 1897--Chris & Julia get along chummily. . .I also thought though that if that Stage Diva hadn't returned. . Julia's offer to "help" Quentin with his amnesia could've gone a lot further than it did. . .
I know Julia was friends with Stokes and he might've felt more but i don't see them together too much--he's terribly fussy. Nicki Blair might've been fun . .and you know I don't really see Julia with Roger (also fussy and pompous) but I will say that when Louis was playing Joshua toward the end of 1795 and Grayson was Natalie in Natalie's last 2 eps--I was suprised by the 'chemistry' i suddenly felt those two had. .
Of course I always wanted the 1st Burke to return from South America alive and have those two mend one another's broken hearts'--

Please God, just send her a MAN! Any man! The poor girl must live in a perpetual state of sexual frustration! All this passion to give to Barnabas and the dope lusts after every barely legal cupcake who drifts his way. Stokes, Roger, Quentin, the Jennings Boys (loved that Heather!), I don't care. Any or all will do for this love-starved doctor! [coolbrows] [coolbrows] [coolbrows]

Connie, you're hip.
Heather, you're off the charts (and I love it).
Jennifer, sweet dreams of Don to you.
Julia was a passionate gal, and her lovelorn status at least gives way for great fan fiction and fantasy (smut or otherwise) for years to come.
-
Call me a hopeless romantic, but these pairings seem obvious to me:
Julia and "Hoffman" from parallel 1970.
Julia and the headless body of Judah Zachary.
Julia and the nameless guy Charles Delaware Tate made happen. He ought to have got him some, before getting shot.
Julia and centegenarian Tate in 1970. (Ditto.) That was one infectious laugh he had.
Julia and Quentin/Amanda's Mr. Death.
I'm full of great ideas like these.

Heather, I LOVE IT! :-*
I'm all for a Julia/Jennings Boys match-up. If ol' Barney could chase after every sweet young thing that crossed his path, then why shouldn't Julia have a couple of young hunks all to herself? In an homage to THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, I envision Julia running a small resort in Mexico, with Tom and Chris as her beach boys.

i mean really Chris (alive) and a wolfboy or Barnabas(dead)and i mean eveything is DEAD!

And Barnabas could serve the rum cocos. And the Iguana would just be a nickname for Julia's trusty...ahh...electronic bedside companion. >:D Anyway - precisely J-C, Connie, Sandor, jennifer, etc...why the hell not, ya know? ;D
Thanks guys...it was just something silly I whipped up to...brighten the day. :-*

Another excellent romantic interest for our fair Julia's hand would well have been that dashing young attorney Tony Peterson... a sweet and charming couple if ever there was one. [thumbleft] [thumbright]
-
They really should have given Julia a love interest, even if it was someone who wanted her, while she wasn't interested in him. I think that Chris would have been pretty hot to have around.
Misa
-
I think it would've taken a lot to distract her from Barnabas, but I agree, it would've been nice to see someone interested in her, if nothing else.
I thought the Tom and Julia side storyline was fun (because it was a more than welcome break from Adam and Nicholas Blair) , though Tom did absolutely nothing for me. He was a bit too rediculous, IMO.

Each girl he passes goes,

In the spirit of Magnus Trask's offerings, how about these offbeat pairings for Julia:
Julia and Sam Evans:
Sam falls for Julia, and decides he must lay off the booze long enough to paint her portrait. Julia eventually discovers Sam to be the bastard son of Charles Delaware Tate. Tate's magic has been passed on to Sam, so Julia will live eternally as long as her portrait remains intact. Meanwhile, Maggie has flashbacks of her potential step-mother hypnotizing her with what appears to be a Duncan yo-yo dipped in green glitter.
Julia and Phillip Todd:
Julia reveals her unquenchable thirst for acquiring antiques by secretly poisoning and killing Megan Todd, comforting Phillip after Megan's funeral, eventually marrying the widower, and then locking him in "the room" upstairs while she changes the shop's name to "Hoffman's Hideaway." Years later, she makes a mint selling the inventory on E-Bay.
Julia and Sky Rumson:
Angelique is spitting tacks when she finds her new hubby embroiled in a passionate affair with everyone's favorite redheaded doctor. Julia convinces Sky to gaslight Angelique, prompting the reformed witch to wind up in a strait-jacket at Wyndecliff, while Julia redecorates the Rumson home on Little Windward Island in Chinese Modern.
-
Oh Sandor, that was richer than a batch of pecan praline double-chocolate peanut butter laced brownies... LMAO! :-*
You guys are really on a roll with these offbeat ideas...love them all - keep 'em coming! ;D
-
A fascinating love interest for Barnabas would have been Ruth Buzzi as Gladys Ormphby. Whenever he'd get into one of his verbose, melancholy moods, she could have pounded some sense into him with her purse.

Heather, you are TOO much! [bigok] Those images are hysterical. And true. I always believed Barnabas would only realize how much Julia meant to him only when he risked losing her to another man. I always thought that Professor Stokes and Julia would have made a great couple.
-
Julia and Elliot would have had the perfect marriage of convenience. Both intelligent and well-educated, they would have shared a world of common interests: science, metaphysics, literature, the theatre, travel.......
But each would have found their pleasures.......elsewhere. ;)
-
But each would have found their pleasures.......elsewhere. ;)
Are you thinking they would've gone to their own separate (ahem) Greek islands?

I think that julia was perfect for barnabas
she already knew what was and she kept
it a secret because she cared about him
and he cared about her too, thats why
he never made her a vampire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
If they would've really given Julia a serious love interest, I kind of like the idea of Roger and Julia...I'm not sure why.
You're not the only one seeing them as a couple. Besides WereQ I mos def could see Roger. I don't know if it would last thought Rog has a crazy sense of humor. Remember when Vicki was trapped in that room and he was making noises and stuff. Dude was a trip.
-
Actually, I think Stokes and Julia make a far better pairing than Barnabas and Julia. I think Barn has too much "baggage"...heck he has whole STEAMER trunks FULL of baggage.... Julia shouldn't have to deal with that. Plus, I think Barnabas takes her for granted sometimes. Stokes and Julia just strike me as a great couple.
Now that would have been cool. Let Barnabas see how she feels for a while. He probably still wouldn't admit his feelings though.lol
-
I don't think the good professor would be a good match, because he wouldn't tolerate her keepling him in the dark all the time! He had the patience of a saint just to put up with the nonsense that came with stepping into her and Barnabas' messes.
Tom.....no. Maybe Julia enjoyed those midnight hickeys more than she pretended, but somehow I don't think she would have wanted to have spend eternity sucking blood instead of transfusing it. [hall2_grin]
Quentin....just can't see these two as an item. Can't put my finger on it, but I just can't.
Roger.....well, maybe.....heaven knows the poor guy could use a NORMAL woman for once. Of course he'd have to get rid of his usual "there's nothing supernatural going on around here!" attitude.
Chris....actually this doesn't sound bad to me. I really liked him and Julia during the Leviathan period when [spoiler]they were both on the outs with Barnabas, firmly under the Leviathan's control at first and cold as a block of ice![/spoiler]
Still.....the one man who I think Julia fit with like a glove is....you guess it BARNABAS COLLINS!!! [hall2_wink]
Is there any fan fic where Barnabas and Julia do get together? (Not talking about the Sam Hall story after the show ended).
-
This might be narrow minded, but I just can't see Julia with anyone other than Barnabas! IMHO, they should have gotten together. I don't believe Barnabas was as oblivious to Julia as he pretended. She is almost his equal in attitude and speaking her own opinions, and perhaps that scares him just a bit, being the old-fashioned person that he is, and acknowledging her as someone hehe loved was in a way giving her power over him, over his emotions and his outlook on the world in general. Being the modern woman she is, her attitude could slowly change his own opinions of life and his place in it, and Barnabas is reluctant to change, I believe it frightens him.
All right, there were plenty of times when Barnabas was insensative to Julia's feelings, and once they became friends all those other women he kept falling head over heels for made him oblivious to some things around him, Julia most especially.
So now I'm contradicting myself, LOL! I'm not sure I know what to make of their relationship, accept for the fact that they definitely belong together.

I loved Connie's (as yet unfinished, alas) novel in which Quentin and Julia were a couple. After reading it, I watched their scenes together again and I could definitely see the chem. Grayson and Selby were very fond of one another (as platonic friends) in RL and I think it shows onscreen.

Yes IluvBarnabas, check out this yahoogroup with all the great J/B fanfic. You can't go wrong, everything I've read there is great and they just keep coming, with all the challenges and on-going stories!!
I also agree with one poster's comment several pages back: Julia needed someone and since Barnabas wasn't looking her way, any of those gorgeous studs would do. That would certainly turn Barnabas' head. LOL
-
Julia and Professor Stokes. Definitely. They're both brilliant. They're both interested in the supernatural (Julia from a scientific perpective and Stokes from an occult one), and after Barnabas, Stokes is probably her closest friend. I'm pretty sure Stokes felt more than friendship towards Julia.
I think so too. I think the Professor carried a torch for her, but since he saw her feelings for Barnabas he never spoke of his own feelings.
I can't quite see her with Roger, though that would have been convenient, they lived in the same house and it would be natural for them to become first friends, and later the friendship deepens into love.
I've read fan fic that pairs her with Willie, but I can't see her with him, since they are very different. They did have one thing in common, for both of them their sun rose and sat on Barnabas.
It would have been nice for Julia to find someone since Mr. Barnabas Collins couldn't see her as anything more than a friend, all he wanted were the SYT's.

Yeah I guess so. Talk about a one sided relationship, yeah I guess it would be good for Barnabas but not good for Willie.
Alondra
-
Willie and Barnabas came from such disparate backgrounds, I can't imagine them ever overcoming them.
A well-educated man wants a man he can talk to about the things that interest him. What interests could Willie and Barnabas have shared? It could also have been difficult to overcome the fact that Barnabas was wealthy, and Willie was not. One man having to accept largess from another is not a comfortable way to live. Even the age difference could be a problem. If Willie wanted to pursue interests such as sports that Barnabas had no talent for or interest in, that would be another aspect of their lives that they could not share. I've known several couples where there was a large age difference, and only one that succeeded. But the elder one died and left the younger one lost and distraught, in the end, and I can't say I thought the whole arrangement worked well for either partner.
-
are you kidding? A man wants a good looking man with a nice round backside. . ooops I hang around Chelsea too much. . :-*
-
Willie would have been no more than a squeeze toy for theoretically gay Barnabas, as Willie is not the brightest, most worldly of humans. It all depends on whether he can take a licking and keep on ticking.
Back to Julia. Possible significant others: Diabolos. Researchers yearn to know the mysteries of life, and the Devil or his lackey, whoever the f that guy in Hell's waiting room was, might know a few. Plus he looked mucho cuddly to me.
Ms. Findlay. She looked an awful lot like Grayson, and what could be more flattering? Who wouldn't make love to him/herself, given the chance? Hands? Am I alone here?
Gordon Russell, second coachman or whatever, in the last episode. The sexual tension between him and Julia was hyperpalpable, don't you think, despite the fact that he lived almost a century before she was born, in another universe that you can't access, except by walking into some room in a mansion in Maine. He's not fooling anyone. He wants Julia. He vwants to drive her in a coach where love dare not speak its name, or something.
-

The one other sort of 'romance' that Julia had besides Tom Jennings was her period of being under the ghost of Gerard's power in 1995. I think the two of them could make a good couple - both being very pale with dark red hair, they would make a good couple if a James Storm character had showed up in the present.
-
Interesting how people interpret a dominant-submissive relationship as romantic.
-
Those Jennings brother pics are awesome!
Julia loves Barnabas so much it's hard to really picture her with anyone else.
Roger and Stokes both seem way too gay for Julia, but funny enough I wanted Joshua and Natalie to get togather at the end of 1795.
If I had to pick anyone else for Julia, Quentin seems to be the best match for her.
I do like Barnabas and Willie as a couple. The differences between them make them seem like an interesting pair, the rich sophisticated older man and his hot rough trade :)
I also think I may well be the only Quentin/Chris shipper in the world.
-
I also think I may well be the only Quentin/Chris shipper in the world.
You very well may be, since [spoiler]Quentin is Chris' great grandfather.[/spoiler]
-
Yeah, I know about the connection between Chris and Quentin but I still ship them anyways :)
Too bad they didn't interact more on the show.
-
I just can't see Julia and Barnbas with anyone but one another..... [easter_grin]
-
so, if [spoiler]Quentin is Chris's Great Grandfather,[/spoiler] then he was dating Carolyn, a relative?
the Jennings were too young for Julia (as was Maggie.) I stand by Elizabeth being a good lover for her. (of course, in those days, Barney couldn't even bite willie on the neck lest it be perceived as homoerotic, so i would imagine that Liz and Jules would not have even been thought of.
-
so, if [spoiler]Quentin is Chris's Great Grandfather,[/spoiler] then he was dating Carolyn, a relative?
Yes, his 3rd cousin. [spoiler]Carolyn's mother and Chris' mother (who, I'm assuming, was a Fillmore that married a man named Jennings) were 2nd cousins.[/spoiler]
BTW, this topic teaches how to add spoiler code to posts--
We Have A Working Spoiler Feature Again!!

So funny to see topics resuscitated after a few years but I also have commented before that Grayson and Louis as Joshua and Natalie seemed to have chemistry, from the moment they met and snarled at each all the way toward the end when they were both hearbroken from the loss of loved ones--it was an interestingly odd changed cuz Roger and Julia had no romantic chemistry IMO--they were like siblings.
-
Now that you mention that Julia99, I can see that fire between Joshua and Natalie...plus I am currently watching 1795! :) I am glad to see this topic resurrected. I love to rumage through old posts and resurrect them!! :)

Yes, I loved that novel too (and even the unfinished version seems to have disappeared off the net into the eternal ether [bawl]). And there's another one too, (don't have the URL on this computer, but its the same website as Cassie's Saga of Quentin Collins, so that might work for a google search), where Quentin and Julia start spending time together and things develop from there. Only the whole thing sends Barn into psychovampire mode, since he only wants her obsessively once she's interested in someone else.
Seen a few others too, here and there (some on Collins Library archives). There's also an absolutely Marvelous one by our cousin Julia99, which was on the Juliahoffman. com site.
If you think about it, it makes sense. Quentin's smart, his track record (if you leave out the AMANDA HARRIS anomaly) runs toward smart, outspoken women with backbones (which certainly describes Julia). In other words, he wouldn't be scared of Julia as Barnabas seems to be on some levels. He's grown up and developed empathy since 1897; he's a rascal, but not that much of a player anymore. That's not even counting the eye candy aspect. [laughing_devil] Bottom line is there's enough there to build on for a halfway decent writer to get a credible story or two or three out of it.
Other choices for me would be Professor Stokes (though I can also see him with Elizabeth, for similar reasons). I like the Dave Woodard backstory idea too. Early Burke and Early Julia would be a good matchup -- they were both motivated, ambitious, and not overburdened with scruples.
