Title: Netscape Q
Post by: Patti Feinberg on January 31, 2005, 09:54:43 PM
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! I'm back online at home.

Okay, instead of using (MB, cover your ears) IE, I'd like to go on through Netscape.

Went to netscapedotcom, don't see how to duh, make it be on my desktop, to just click to access the 'net.

Thanks,

Patti

You having trouble with IE?  ::)  Imagine that.  8)    [Blow_Up_IE]

I'm using Mozilla firefox and like it better than iE.  I also have Netscape on the computer as a backup.  It's good to have a backup in case one doesn't work with some sites.

Netscape 7.2 seems to have some issues with the SP2 update, so if anyone has SP2 installed, it might be better if you try Mozilla or Firefox.
(Netscape 7.2 for both Mac and Linux work fine - but no surprise there because they're not running on Windows.  ;))

Hmm, I didn't know that.  What sort of trouble does N7.2 have?  I have 7.02 so is that safe?   ??? :o :-

Install what?  Mozilla?  Just download it onto your hd, find it and double-click the setup program. It will install automatically.  This is with either program.  Mozilla you can find at http://www.mozilla.org

Oh, Netscape 7.2 is safe - certainly safer than using IE. But the SP2 update wreaks havoc with the way 7.2 works on many Web sites. For instance, in this post here Midnite detailed a few of the problems she suddenly had on the forum after installing the update:

...
As for SP2, after installing it, links on other sites sometimes wouldn't open ...

Go to www.netscape.com, scroll down to the "Downloads of the Day" section in the second column, click on the "Download Netscape 7.2" link, and follow all the instructions that are provided right there on their site.  :)

If you installed Netscape 7.2, that icon should already be on your desktop.  Check All Programs in your start menu to see if you did.

You mean browsers, and yes, we could if we chose to look for the information.  Why do you ask?

Well, I went to start/all programs, don't see netscape (even though I'm on through there...oh well, no icon). About the browsers MB, just an idle question.

Now, non-idle questions...since we're back on, my husband loaded Norton. I keep getting some of the same warnings/whatevers are trying to load; I click block, then, 10 secs. later, same message, and next day, etc. 4-5....kewl, just now, one popped up. Hope yo don't mind if I type it:
salm.ex is attempting to access the internet.
time, date,
Program c:/temp/salm.exe
Protocol TCP (Outbound)

does anyone know what this really means? (I have salm on in my freezer!)

Thanks,
Patti

salm.exe
What Is It?
180Search Assistant - salm.exe

What Does it Do?
180Search Assistant is generally installed by some other piece of spyware. This not only displays ads but logs your browsing habits to send back to 180! If you have this you most likely have several other programs that you need to uninstall.

Have someone who knows what they're doing go here (http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/394-p1.php) for instructions on how to get rid of it ASAP.

I'm not MB.  ;)  (My stars are a different color because I don't moderate this board.)

Patti, please humor me.  In the horizontal menu at the top of your browser, click Help, then select "About..." in the dropdown menu.  What does it say?

And did you, at any time, right click/delete the Netscape listing after you installed it?

Have someone who knows what they're doing go (URL) for instructions on how to get rid of it ASAP.

Spyware like this is really getting to be a pain in the butt, and sometimes even following these instructions won't completely eliminate the problem. The easiest way to avoid a lot of this crap is to use Firefox. If you want a good program for cleaning crap like this off your pc, I'd suggest Webroot's Spy Sweeper. (Unfortunately, for folks using Norton's Antivirus and Internet Security, they have been really crappy with detecting, preventing, and cleaning up spyware intrusions.)

Patti, if you're going to switch to a dialup service and decide to go with Earthlink, they have a version of Spy Sweeper included in their software.

Your browser was reprogrammed, but that's not something that can be done accidentally.

I asked someone else and was just shown how a hacker can do exactly what you're describing.  So that's a possibility.  It's also possible you dl'd a hacked version.  I don't know if a virus can do this, but they are certainly capable of changing files.

If someone got access to your computer, the answer to the above probably won't make a difference because that can be changed too.   :-

I can't say more than this because I'd be getting in over my head.  Except, please be careful!
