Title: Dark Shadows Documentary
Post by: Uncle Roger on September 16, 2016, 07:49:10 PM
In today's mail, I received a postcard from the Festival/MPI. Besides promoting the Hollywood event, it also had a blurb which stated "New Dark Shadows feature documentary coming soon". Nothing more. I don't recall hearing anything about this in Tarrytown, so this is certainly an intriguing development.

Definitely intriguing!

Especially considering the checkered track record Dark Shadows has had with documentaries.

Interesting.  I await further details.

Some of the videos at the Festival had a sub title. I don't remember what it was  now but "The House" was under that umbrella. I was pretty sure that meant that those things would appear on a video very soon. I'd just about given up hope that it was going to happen until now. I'm predicting "The House" will end up as a special feature on the documentary. It's probably fallen into the public domain by now.

I forgot to add the reason I jumped to that conclusion. One year the Festival had a bunch of videos on their schedule entitled "Bloopers and Treasures" and of course soon after that DVD was released.

I got a postcard yesterday selling a DS t-shirt; and it also mentions "Want access to never before seen DARK SHADOWS goodies and sensational offers?

Other side says "New DARK SHADOWS feature documentary coming soon".

So, I just went to the web address & signed up, but, there's nothing to see; nor is there any info on an upcoming documentary.

Many of us will remember, of course, the '91 documentary celebrating 25 years of DS on the Sci-Fi Channel.  It was incredible.  I have a DVD of it and watch it every once in awhile.  My favorite interview was with Nancy Barrett who auditioned for the role of Vicki.  She wasn't considered and was rather grateful because she considered the character - how shall we say? - too "milquetoast" but then was asked to read for the part of Carolyn.  She stated (paraphrasing):  "Here's this girl with too much money, too much hair and I thought, wow!"

Umm - the Sci-Fi Channel hadn't launched in '91.  [ghost_nowink]  It didn't launch until September of '92.

Could you be confusing what you have with something else?  [ghost_smiley]  Maybe MPI's 25th anniversary VHS/DVD?  Though, not having watched it in years, I don't honestly recall if NB makes that particular remark in that...

It sounds like it might be Casting Shadows. Nancy makes that statement about Carolyn in that documentary, though she may well have stated it elsewhere too.

It's on YouTube. Google Dark Shadows documentary and it's the first thing that comes up. It runs just under an hour.

She definitely makes the remark on one or maybe even more of the MPI tapes/DVDs.  [ghost_wink]

As for Casting Shadows, I don't know if I've ever seen it - though years ago I might have seen it at a Fest and don't remember... I'll definitely check it out on YouTube to see. Thanks for the heads up.  [ghost_smiley]

This was done by the NYC PBS station to promote their airing the episodes. It's the early days of the DS festivals, as a lot of it was filmed at the Gateway Hilton in Beautiful Downtown Newark. In addition to the actors, you can catch a glimpse of some longtime fans. The clips from the costume contest are classic.
The interview with Nancy Barrett was a big deal back then, since Nancy had yet to appear at a festival and wouldn't for several years.

Well, if I'd seen it before, for some reason I'd completely blocked it out of my mind, so more than likely today is the first time I've ever seen it. And watching it was quite the experience, from Frid's embracing attitude of the show (which just four years later would completely change due to the actions of a certain someone), to a certain someone else claiming to have a "good memory", to the repeated insistence of the host to refer to "Collinswood", to a really great interview with Clarice Blackburn, to a truly fantastic interview with Nancy Barrett, and to all the costume gala performances which were all a complete hoot and a half! Great fun for several reasons.

Apparently I'm in it for a second. Just a cameo. No dialogue. [ghost_cool]

I think, MB, that MPI made the documentary around '91, for the 25th anniversary, and was aired a year-or-two later on Sci-Fi when the network hit the airwaves.  I remember videotaping it and kept it for years until the DVD came out.  Again, I'm not sure of the date when it was made; it might've been a few years after the anniversary.

Oh, I thought this was the Current documentary we were talking about - which of course didn't surprise me, lol.

On YouTube, the first 2 things aren't DS; one is a trailer for "The Girl on the Train" (which I want to own), 2nd another commercials.

Since you said it's just under an hour, there's one, at 59:xx minutes, "Casting DS" from 1987?...?

And there's pt3 of 'bloopers'.

------------------------------------------------------------------

ok....just started watching it.

I've never heard Jonathan Frid speak...'normally' (if you catch my drift).

Just panning through....there's Miss Joan Bennett!!!!

Joan was an absolute trouper. I think it was at her first festival where she stayed signing autographs well after midnight, long after the other actors had left. She would not hear of disappointing anyone. And her signature never varied. An extremely classy lady.
