Title: Curse of the Crimson Altar/The Crimson Cult
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on September 06, 2016, 05:12:06 AM
I just noticed that the TV channel Comet is running The Crimson Cult right now or later this evening: 12am EST/PST | 11pm CST | 1am MST. It's a 1968 Barbara Steele film that's also known as Curse of the Crimson Altar (though it wasn't released in the US until 1970). It's sort of a trifecta of '60s horror because not only does it star BS, but it also stars Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee.

The film also has the distinction of being the last film to feature Boris Karloff that was released during his lifetime...

THE CRIMSON CULT is a major guilty pleasure of mine.  I have a DVD from the UK which is slightly censored and isn't the best quality, alas, but it did come with a great illustrated booklet about the filming.

Karloff got all the best lines and scenes.  Michael Gough had a funny role as a mentally compromised factotum.

Barbara Steele's role was almost just a cameo, but her costume was to die for.

her costume was to die for.

You could certainly say that!

I also loved how they used a kaleidoscope of BS for the main dream sequence:
