Just parking this link here--it may come in handy.  Hope it proves to be irrelevant to your purchase.  Congratulations!

Thanks for passing that along, Gothick, because a few topics for very suspicious offers for the boxed set have been posted over the years. One was even eventually shown to be comprised of copies of the eps made from the Sct-Fi showings!  [haironend]  How they thought they could get away with THAT is too hard to even fathom!!

Oh man, I hope it's legit.

(It does read 2nd edition, or something; it says it DOESN'T come w/signed postcard from J. Frid).

But, it mentions 'white ribbon' to hold it open? (In the coffin dom.)

It's never been opened (still in shrink); and, the seller is in USA.

"Of all the gin joints in all the world..." or, in my case, WHY HASN'T IT GONE THROUGH??????????????????????????????? COMPLETELY OCDing about this; ebay lists it as I bought it, PayPal lists it as I've bought it, but ANY other time, I'd have gotten an email on my gmail account, and, it would've shown on my bank. (Again, completely OCDing.)

I have NEVER seen DS from ep 1-122X.

I'M GONNA FIND WALDO, aka HARVEY KEITEL.

I'm going to savor the 'extras'.

(What you don't know....when I buy a TV series, which I love to own, I'll watch it just a little at a time, until the next season.) Actually, the only one I can say that I've done this is "True Detective". I wouldn't let myself get to the last 2-3 eps of the first season until I purchased it on Amazon.

Thanks for this venting....expect installments.

BTW, how would I know BEFORE I open it, if it were a 'phony'? Any tell-tale signs?

Patti

Hi Patti, there's a video link in the post above that is supposed to show what the fake set looked like when the guy unwrapped it.

One thing that it is always advisable to do is to test drive at least five of the discs, randomly chosen from around the set.  It will be blatantly obvious if the episodes are from the Sci Fi broadcasts because the quality will be poor and you will see the logo in the corner of the screen.  I think the article details some other telltale signs of a forged set.

I hope it is above board and, above all, that your discs arrive on schedule!  I think eBay has a protocol for reporting malpractice--the eBay version of the Better Business Bureau that we used to have long ago.

Best wishes,

Steve

Yeah, what Gothick said, Patti! You don't even have to unwrap it to know it's bogus! Unmless the crook upgraded his game. Got my fingers crossed for ya!
Title: I Heard, I Obeyed, and, uh, yeah well...
Post by: Patti Feinberg on August 07, 2016, 03:57:04 AM
I definitely listened to warnings here, and watched the link.

So, I went on to my ebay, and just asked the seller, WHO ACCEPTED MY MONEY 4 DAYS AGO.

(I clicked on the 'send chat to my email'). This is the exact copy of what I asked:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can you please tell me the barcode# on the back?

I'm hearing that 'shrink wrapped' sets are counterfeits.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, I go to work, and at 2:30, wonder if he's working on a weekend.

HE CANCELED MY ORDER.

Then, I had the delight of attempting to contact a person at ebay (odds are comparable to winning the Pick 4 lottery in your state).

It got escalated because I was $F$(*(^& LIVID.

With good reason. This was not a bid; he had NINE for sale (hmmm).

So, I was attempting to tell the senior rep that the $$$ wouldn't be back in my checking account until like Mon-Tues (weekend), when, thank God, she said it went back into my PayPal account. (There was another ONE which I had seen, about $20 more than the first, which, now was $35 more.)

So, I don't care what it is, as long as it's the whole series.

I was outraged, sad, mad, gloomy, bitchy, sad, sad, sad, sad, and probably other things.

I'm semi-holding my breath until IF the other one comes.

Patti

dom is a prophet

PS...so, this new guy accepted my offer...what if he decides no??? If someone accepts your money for a good or service, don't they NEED to have my okay to decline? It's not like I was talking back & forth with him, I clicked on the Buy Now. How come he gets to accept, take my money, then, since I dared to have a brain & ask, just dump me???? ebay said they'll put a mark on him.....seriously though, he was in US, don't I have rights?

I think you had a lucky escape.  Apart from the fact that the goods are bootlegs, according to some of the reports, there are usually a few defective discs (which might skip or refuse to play properly).  That can be really frustrating when you're looking forward to a specific episode and it turns out you don't really have what you thought you had.

The cheapest I've ever heard anyone getting a for-real coffin set for is around $190 I think.  They're currently selling for around $399 on Amazon.

Good luck!

b) DIVE IN...WATCH WHATEVER I WANT

c) be a smart cookie and start from the beginning

d) ignore my own advice

It's a shame that Watching Project for earlier eps are on Current Talk '15 1.

Congratulations, Patti!!  You're going to have SO much fun with this!  I've been working through the coffin set myself, and and currently somewhere near the end of 1970PT.  Put my watching on hold for a bit to watch a couple other series (including Orphan Black -- wow, what an interesting show).

I started with episode 1, in 2012 soon after the Depp movie came out.  My viewing during the original run started with Laura's last day, right before the Barnabas storyline started.  What struck me about the first year of DS was how much it influenced the movie, in subtle but significant ways.

My own suggestion to you would be to go through it sequentially from the beginning, but that's just the way I am.  Ends and beginnings of storylines overlap, and sometimes interconnect.  But just enjoy it whatever way is best for you!

Why is that a shame?  [hdscrt]  If you'd like to add your own thoughts for those eps, you can definitely still post there and people will certainly read them.  [nodassent]

Except for the first week of eps (which I saw at the '89 Fest), I never saw the pre-Barn eps until they were on Sci-Fi. I'd always been led to believe that they were so different from the post-Barn eps and in many ways were quite boring. But I couldn't have been more fascinated when I watched because I found them far from boring and I was amazed at how so many elements of the show that actually continued throughout were introduced and developed in the pre-Barn era - not to mention how several characters were written so much better. I would totally agree that watching from the beginning would be the best way to go because having all the info from those eps totally enriches what's to come.

Exactly! When people say the storyline of the film is nothing like the original series I always scratch my head and wonder if we've seen two totally different films because I see so much of the original series in the film...

(God yes! I love Orphan Black - and I'm currently watching Season 4 on DVD. It's great how they've gone back to the beginning to explain so much about Beth's character while still moving the storyline forward.)

KMR...yes...when Burke was meeting up w/Strack, then Joe, the outside of the Collinsport Inn was VERY similar to the movie.

I was telling my daughter earlier that Barnabas doesn't come around til ep 166 (IIRC).

I can't wait to see the Laura storyline again!

Laura's arrival is one of my all-time fave DS moments - classic soap stuff.

A couple of months ago I watched from 1995-the end of 1840.  I wanted to see this storyline play out on it's own and I noticed the pace had gotten considerably slower by this time like in the first year of the series and the supernatural was slowly being phased out.  By 1840 it's almost like a regular soap opera with supernatural elements sprinkled around it.

I didn't feel like watching PT 1841.

I haven't seen this in a while, but, I remember this is true.

NO Barnabas, no 'witchy' Ang....typical sibling rivalry..

But, it's a BLAST.

I'm watching stuff that I've never seen...these early eps.

Those early shows are so fab.  So nuanced and rich in character writing.

I particularly love any scene involving Liz and Miss Winters.

Those early episodes are almost a parallel DS timeline... Whenever I watch those I'm reminded of those few Twilight Zones that were shot on video. The burn-in video flash of 60's era black-and-white is so lovely. I only saw those about 6 years ago for the first time.

[spoiler]I remember being blown away when the ghost of Josette shows up!!  [ghost_smiley][/spoiler]
