Title: <OT Dr. Faustus
Post by: Patti Feinberg on April 08, 2016, 08:42:45 PM
Barn, saying "The Letter 'M' Above the Doorway; his name is Mephistopholes" or whatever.
So, I googled this, and eventually, I'm on IMDb.
One of the listings is Doctor Faustus, 1967 with Richard Burton & Liz Taylor (never heard of this from them before).

Has anyone seen this rendering? Good/bad?

There are others listed, would anyone recommend one version over another?

Thanks,

Patti

I saw it on TV many, many years ago. I don't remember it as being very good. Burton chews a lot of scenery and is way over the top. Taylor fared somewhat better as Helen of Troy, largely because she has no dialogue. She wears some fairly bizarre outfits and seems to be painted silver at one point. It's an okay way to fill 90 minutes but I wouldn't buy it.

That's ok....while looking around, I also found:
The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus From the Quarto of 1604, a FREE ebook, which I had delivered to my phone.

Winner, winner,

Happy Weekend,

Patti

What's Quarto of 1604?

Well, I read Dr. Faustus, then watched the R. Burton movie.

There were a few things *out of order*, but, on other parts, I had my phone (w/Kindle book), and it was verbatim.

I just didn't understand the background; it was EXTREMELY reminiscent of a Vincent Price/EA Poe flick.

Wagoner is mentioned, but not Doc's other friend.

Mephistopilies is played brilliantly, IMHO.
