Title: Barna/guin
Post by: Gothick on March 13, 2016, 08:50:22 PM
Fans,

Today a friend and I took a jaunt to Salem, Mass.  It was a brief trip but we stopped in Harrison's, a huge comic book store which is one of the very few in the area with a good selection of horror film fan mags available.  Anyhow, I was waiting for my friend to pay for his purchases and happened to see what I initially thought was a large Barnabas Collins action figure.  It turned out to be the Penguin from a TV series called Gotham which I think depicts the childhood life of Bruce Wayne.

I haven't seen the series (I think it was canceled sometime ago?), but the figure was tall, in a dark vaguely Edwardian looking suit, with dark pointy bangs and a face whose modeling sort of suggested Jonathan Frid.  In fact, he looked more like Frid than some of the official DS merchandise I have seen does.  He was holding an umbrella with the handle up and at first, I had to do a double-take because I thought I was seeing a wolf's-head cane!

It might have been just my imagination, but it made enough of an impression on me to write about it here.

No it's not your imagination because I've also often thought that the Penguin's look on Gotham shares more than a passing resemblance to Barnabas.  [nodassent]  In fact, I've often wanted to post certain photos of the Penguin that I've come across because in them he looks so uncannily like Barnabas, but I've just never gotten around to it...

(And Gotham is definitely still on.  [easter_smiley])

Thanks, Mysterioso Darling!  It's a relief to know I'm not losing my mind.

... ... ... Am I???

cheers, G.

*emerges from the dark shadows*

Dear Gothick and MB - I immediately thought the same thing when I first saw Pengy on 'Gotham!' I wonder if it was intentional.

Interesting, Penny!  I wonder if this Penguin has been known to utter such lines as:  "You have betrayed me!"  Or: "You MUST!"  Or:  "Tonight must go nothing wrong!"

curious DS fans are curious.

Ha! He should also combine his Barnaguin with the Burgess Meredith version. "You have betrayed me! Waugh! Waugh! Waugh!"

Regarding Penguin's hair looking like it was possibly inspired by Barnabangs: Last night's episode of Gotham had a line spoken by character Barbara Gordon to Penguin referencing his "disco Vampire hair". I immediately thought of this thread.

How funny!  [snow_cheesy]  So maybe they really did go for some sort of Barnabas look...
