Title: favorite "moment"
Post by: michael c on August 01, 2004, 04:26:39 PM
what is your favorite d.s."moment"?the moment on the show that really gave you goosebumps?mine is the seance that led to the 1795 story.i watched it again friday night.there are so many layers to it.the hostility between barnabas and julia is intense.then the business with barnabas and carolyn dirty-dealing the whole thing, with carolyn pretending to go into the trance and speak for sarah.then dear vicki, who was uninvolved in all the trickery, goes into the trance and is sent back in time.those few minutes are my favorite "moment".

p.s. some of you may have already answered this question on another board. ;)

The firery demise of Nicholas Blair in the woods while a smiling Barnabas watches on in glee.......then the following moment when Barnabas goes back and shares the great news with Dr. Julia.....all seems well in Collinwood at that moment.....it was uplifting to see both of them giddy with knowing the Diabalos had taken Blair back into the underworld...... :P

I wasn't sure why Barnabas was the "good" person at that point and Nicholas Blaire the total baddy. I mean, Nicholas Blaire did fall in love with Maggie and was showing signs of humanity (he certainly wasn't any match for totally evil Angelique). And it was long before that Barnabas was asking for Peter Bradford's head on the monster -and it was just after Barnabas inadvertently caused the blindness of the artist Sam Evans by asking him to paint an aging Angelique. Barnabas' expression was like ..."oh well"  anything and everyone (except Vickie) is expendable in order to protect MYSELF. Not the best story-line for Barnabas fans. He was kinda of a jerk then.

When Nathan Forbes waits for Barnabas with a crossbow... and when Barnabas comes through the door, fires. Barnabas appears stricken, but then defiantly pulls out the bolt and menacingly growls, "You didn't get my heart, Lieutenant. You didn't get my heart."

I originally saw that at a friend's house before I ever got to watch the show regularly as a kid, so it was sort of a stand-alone ES moment -- and for me, a defining one.

The moment when Vickie meets Barnabas and little Sarah in the 1795 flash back... standing outside the first Collinwood, that later became the Old House.  At that moment I could see how much Barnabas loved his little sister.

I have several favorite moments.  Probably the first moment where I realized how great the show is was when Rev. Trask was presenting his testimony against Victoria at her witchcraft trial.  His eyes rolled, his voice boomed, and he seemed every bit the crazed fanatic. It was riveting.
I also love how, in 1897, Kitty Soames, who is Josette's reincarnation, flies at Angelique and tries to strangle her upon their first meeting.  I always saw it as retribution for the evils that Angelique had committed against her in the past.

From the Leviathan storyline: Angelique's shock when she discovers that her husband Sky's best buddy is her hated enemy Nicholas Blair, and the subsequent fall-out as she is forced to use her magic again in order to keep Sky from destroying her are also very highly charged moments.

The scene in 1970 where Tad and Carrie take possession of David and Hallie at Rose Cottage is very chilling.  The kids are so resigned to the fact that they will soon cease to exist; they just sit opposite each other, say goodbye, and await the inevitable.
Many more moments stand out in my mind.  Those are just a few of the best.

My all-time favorite moment is when Barnabas takes Sarah's flute, shakes it at her, and says, "I hope you like playing 'London Bridge' on the moon, 'cause that's where you're going! Ho ho, bang....ZOOM."

Yep, that's my all-time favorite moment. ;)
My favorite scene was during the 1795 storyline when Barnabas shoots Angelique and she then places the vampire curse on him!  The whole scene was just so intense, fake bat & all!
My first defining moment was the end of the first episode I ever watched when DS was first shown in syndication.

Money obsessed Willie (who almost looked crazed by his grave robbing) and the look on his face as he opened B's coffin and then the look on his face as the hand rose up and grabbed Willie by the throat!  I was hooked immediately!

My next was (as mscbryk already commented) the seance leading up to Vicki's trip to the 1795.  I was in Daffy Duck mode, literally jumping up and down with glee, and running to tell my mother about it!!

One of my favorite moments is when Liz finally spills the beans just as she's about to marry Jason.

It would be hard to pick a most favorite scene, but one of the most funny has to be Willies Dream Curse. I know its supposed to be a horrible dream, but ole Willie must think he is going for the emmy...The wild faces, the extreme gestures of his hands and arms, its a bit over the top to say the least.. On one of the door frames, as he is closing the door, nearly topples over, and you can see him holding onto it. That last door with the wolf head  lol   as he screams, he is not even looking at the wolf, but directly into the camera, you can see him looking 90 degrees to the right just before his close up...Only on DS!!    :o

i just thought of another one...when liz confronts laura at the cottage.laura vows that if she decides to take david "no power on earth" would stop her.when liz asks her what she means laura warns her that she'll find out and that she'll be very sorry she tried to interfere with her plans.when liz gets back to collinwood she finds out laura doesn't make idle threats. :o

*When Vickie rescues David from the blazing inferno (and Laura) in 1967...what a climax!  ;D

*The day when the family has to evacuate Collinwood and traipse over to the Old House (right before 1897). The way the camera panned across the empty rooms in Collinwood, playing Quentin's theme in the background...then showing the handsome devil himself laughing his etherial keister off---powerful  and spooky.   :D

*Oh--any and all Barnabas and/or Julia scenes too (especially the rare moments when he comes to HER rescue instead of the SYT's ["sweet young things" for you layfolk...chuckle]). In fact, one of my eccentric wishes is to have a tape in my possession with nothing BUT B&J scenes on it. Well, just for variety's sake, it could also be a tape with J&B scenes and some splashes of Julia interacting with her 'other' men too (chortle).  Sigh--I can dream, can't I?   ;)

I know, I'm a nut.  ::)   ;D  LOL

I don't have a specific favorite moment as I'm just now watching it all on DVD (I think it must have felt v. different for those watching it when it really was new), but there are a few moments I really enjoyed watching:

David was at Barn's house and Willie was getting all fidgity and nervous.  He finally managed to talk David into leaving but Barnabas called out for David to wait and said he'd walk him back to the big house.  Then Barn turned to Willie, with one heck of a wickedly wolfish grin, and said something to the effect of "We don't want the boy walking alone in the dark, do we?" So funny - he really tortured poor Willie.

A sweeter moment was when they were having their fancy dress party.  Barn took a look at Liz, who looked v. regal as usual, and nearly blurted out that she looked just like his mother.  He looked so vulnerable at that moment -- as if he were just about to run into her arms for a hug.  Poor mama's boy.

A beautifully shot scene, also featuring Barnabas (I like him a lot) was one of the times he snuck into Victoria's bedroom and debated biting her.  It looked so creepy and most gothic.  The grainy b&w film kind of added to the whole thing.

The special effects horror scenes don't really do as much for me as the creepy character scenes.

Another favorite moment is during the dream curse when Vickie would suffer having the dream over and again rather than pass it on to Barnabas... then without warning Julia SLAPS! Casandra who before that had a very smug smile on her face I believe...  priceless!  ;)

Any scene where Julia slaps someone ...The Cassandra scene GOSC pointed out and when Julia slaps Joe . . and then when Joe's going nuts at the jail and Julia whips out that big ole hypo. . . .yeah that' s fun. . .Of course i like the plaintive love lorn scene between B&J just after they left PT and Barnabas' survival of the silver bullet in 1995 and Julia's emotional breakdown. . .

I have so many favorite moments that I've posted on this board but since I just finished tape 43 of 1795 and since it's outstanding I'll focus on it. In the basement of the old house Joshua finds out his son is not dead and has become a vampire. Usually JF and Thayer David are my fav duo but Louis Edmonds outdoes himself. I give him full credit for those exciting scenes. They may have made fun of them years later but at the time Louis Edmonds was completely "there" - one of the few times I felt sorry for Joshua- stalling Nathan Forbes, placating and protecting Naomi, trying to do "what's best" for Millicent - Joshua is a marvel of action and responsiblity. And his look of pain, anger and sorrow at what Barnabas has become is genuinely affecting. A great DS moment.

I agree with Heather, that Vickie's rescue of David from the burning shack was the momonet I got hooked on the show. Although I had been watching for a while, from then on I was committed! I was about David's age at the time and he was the character I related to.

The last time I watched the series all the way through, I was hooked by the scene where Barnabas has Julia murder Dr. Woodard. I was moved by Barnabas's words along the lines of "You may mock my affliction, but you may not mock   my      pain."

After these, i would say the build up to Quentin's ghost when the children discover the skeleton walled up in the West Wing was a major grabber!

Yes, I recall Barnabas becoming rather upset with Dr. Woodard for mentioning Sarah's name while attempting to escape his office... something along the lines of "look I see Sarah!" then running for the door, alas slightly too slow, Barnabas displayed his rath and made Dave Woodard pay for his mistake of uttering his sister's name.

I overall hate the Leviathan storyline, but, notable exception was when 1st kid (Michael?) goes upstairs, but then a moment later 2nd boy (Alex?) who's older/bigger comes down....crreeeeeppppyyyyy!!!

Also, one of the all time best scenes from all DS is 1897:
(and this is real spoilage for those of you watching the current DVD, so you may not want to read this):
when Barn and Laura realize they 'recognize each other'
That was fantastic!

another great moment...when vicki gets caught in a storm and is forced to spend the night in josette's room at the old house...when she's asleep barnabas comes into the room and gazes at her longingly...but he cannot bring himself to take her blood.it sums up the complexity of b's character.

For me, it is the scene where David and Amy are playing in that dusty, cob-webbed room, filled with junk, Amy telling David that she really can hear Quentin on that disconnected Victorian phone.  David teases her, but when he speaks into it, intending to prove that she's just a silly girl who doesn't know the difference between make-believe and reality, that expression of terror-ridden shock and surprise on his face, heightened by the quick camera-pan-in-close-shot, caused by him hearing a disembodied voice we can't hear, was simply chilling.  Those two kids were absolutely incredible in their acting ability.

:-X  Well, I know I'm one of the few Leviathan story fans, as I think what we imagine as the creature is better than anything the old DS budget could created, plus it was true to Lovecraft in that if you actually saw "one of the Ancient Ones", you could lose part of your sanity. That said. I like Michael as he was a pretty good actor and reminds me now of a young Christopher Walken.
Speaking of which here's favorite Leviathan moment...

My favorite scene was at the end of an episode where Barnabas decides he is going to kill
David (after he realized he knew the secret room) and says "little David, you are going to sleep for a long, long time."  Julia then rushes in and begs him not to do it saying she will not let him and then he tells her "there is nothing that can stop me!"  The doors blow open and Barnabas realizes that it is Sarahs ghost preventing him from leaving.  Juila then smugly states "nothing can stop you...except for a little girl!"
The look on Barnabas' face is priceless!

My favorite "moment" is when Barnabas comes home, yells for Willie and then beats him with his (Barnabas) cane.

My other one was when
Barnabas finally got it through his head that, yes, he did love Angelique.  But ....SHE'S DEAD.
My favvorite moment is the end of 1840, too,
when Barnabas realized he loved Angelique...I like to think she knew how he felt before she died, I mean, I don't think he called her my darling since Martinique, or maybe very early in their marriage before he found out the truth about her...

when Barnabas realized he loved Angelique...I like to think she knew how he felt before she died, I mean, I don't think he called her my darling since Martinique, or maybe very early in their marriage before he found out the truth about her...
I feel the love that Barnabas felt for Angelique at the end of 1840 timeband was not the same love he felt for his beloved josette years prior, Barnabas searched for his Josette in the faces of Maggie Evans, Victoria Winters, and Lady Kitty Hampshire, his obsession for her reaching into time travel to save his beloved from jumping to her death only to lose her to poison...

I can not recall Barnabas reminiscing of the times he spent with Angelique, I believe he was grateful to Angelique for
saving Quentin thus saving the Collins family of the future and of course for removing the curse without asking for any special favors in return touched his heart so that he could no longer fight reason...
that being Angelique's past trespasses in causing the death's of  Jeramiah, Naomi, Sarah and of course Josette.
And now with Angelique dying in his arms
his heart could only feel grief and remorse for the once witch who began it all in the first place...

Thus in the end, unbeknownst to Barnabas he at last achieved victory over evil after all.   :-
