Title: machen in sleeveless
Post by: michael c on June 03, 2004, 01:53:30 AM
today's montage reminded me of something.why is vicki always in sleeveless? since "orbach's" supplied the clothing, why couldn't they have outfitted thier heroine in more diverse styles?it's almost always the same few dresses.my favorite vicki dress is the red a-line with purple stripes down the front and on the(gasp!)sleeves,to be worn with matching bow(of course). :-*

Just a stab in the dark, but since the episodes we're currently "watching" were taped in the late Summer of 1968, I'd guess that accounts for Vicki's sleeveless look.  It was popular for summer dresses in the late Sixties.

Old fogey Gothick (if you want a fashion blast from the past, rent the Monterey Pop DVD--you'll find out just how garrrooovy the clothes were back in 1967, Summer of LOVE!)

Nauseatingly popular...most women didn't have the upper arms for it....women didn't "work out" back then and "buff" was something you did to your wood floors.

I find it amusing that back then (I was a teenager in the 60's) "groovy" clothes made you look poorer than dirt......and today, kids have to have clothes that make them look richer than Midas....... ::)

i know this was a popular fashion in the late 1960's,but sometimes carolyn and maggie wear sleeves.but vicki is always in sleeveless.i recall one ep. where liz tried the look and it was pure gooseflesh.also, vicki has really nice hair, but in some eps. she looks like she's wearing a "fall". :P

I was a teen in the 60's and sleeveless was definitely in style.  I would have thought the climate in Maine would be too cold for it especially by the ocean. If you want to see some other sources for 60's styles, check out ebay.  I'll occasionally bid on teen mags for girls from the 60's. I'm always outbid.  The styles seem very much in demand.

i think overall Alexandra's clothing on DS was attrocious highlighting all her flaws. .(e.g. birthing hips).  And her hair could've used a some thinning out .. .Joan's wardrobe usually was good and Carolyn's but Vicki and Julia suffered . . blech ..think about Grayson, dead of New York City summer, 90+ degrees, 80% humidity, in wool! uhh the sufffering but then you know right Connie. . Grayson :-* came up to you at a taping complaining about how hot and sweaty she was since they turned off the AC for 'ghostly' smoke.  .

Sorry, but I've been dying to ask... What is machen?

the best is a scene where vicki is in her room dressing for a date with burke.julia drops by and helps vicki decide what to wear.on her bed are two dresses to choose from(as opposed to the orange sleeveless she already has on).they select(surprise!)the periwinkle blue sleeveless she wears all the time.
carolyn, the spoiled rich girl, gets better cloths.i just watched an ep. where carolyn shows up in full equestrien gear, riding crop and all!which was funny since there was never mention of stables being on the collinwood grounds.
even maggie gets kickier cloths.a great look is shortly after she leaves wyndcliff.she sits around the cottage, arms folded, sulking because she can't leave.and she's wearing an outrageous "warhol" flower-print quilted maxi-skirt.it's too good! ::)

It's IMDB...Internet Movie Database.

(And I only know the name of the movie because I have a friend who speaks German...)  :D

i'm sorry to keep bringing this up,but the show's costuming has me up in arms! tonight, cassandra wears a boxy, swingy mint and apple green striped cape over matching apple green dress, accessorized with white kid gloves(and,of course,a black wig).julia, a finely tailored gray suit with a large, flat bow across the front.vicki? the same stupid pink sleeveless dress, this time worn with a bright blue cardigan and, inexplicably,a big, clunky brooch pinned onto the front of it.why?i also noticed that vicki and cassandra share a fondness for insanely voluminous orange chiffon sleepwear. ::)

i laughed when i read this as i agree on her clothes there were plenty of stylish
sleeveless dresses(think Jackie Kennedy) but Vicki's were frumpy they
must thought this was the poor little orphan look! i noticed the other day in Macys
a lot of sleeveless dresses that were popular in the 60s (very preppy and LilyP all
pink and green my personal fav 8))
jennifer
Cassandra's greens were quite pukey though LOL

jen, cassandra's greens might have been "pukey" but they were as freshly minted as a penny.but at this point in the show it's annoying to see vicki in dresses worn when bill malloy was alive! i guess she was supposed to be a low-paid governess with limited wardrobe funds.but since belief was suspended on every other level, and a major store supplied the cloths, i wish they could have given the dear girl a fresh look once in awhile. ::)

She never really did get the wardrobe make-over like the rest of the cast.  For example, once Joe Haskel got some new clothes and what a treat it was.  I got very tired of that Buffalo(?) Paid shirt jacket he always wore. I suppose the budget for clothing was ultimately approved by Dan Curtis.  He didn't seem to spare the expense for Liz and Roger which is understandable.  I really liked most of the clothes that Julia wore.  Her clothing looked reserved but expensive.  My problem with Lara Parker's clothes is that she never really developed a personal style (IMO) that suited her.  It was almost as if you could look in her closet and not find one thing that would go with anything else and what was in there couldn't even be accessorized.

you're right about julia's cloths.although everyone makes fun of "the green suit" her cloths do look expensive and chic.i love that she still wore gloves in the late 1960's, a time when the "hippie look" was tossing such ladylike conventions out.and with her short hairdo julia looked "smart".so far i like cassandra's cloths.green suits her with that black hair.and after i ranted the other night i was rewarded with a new look for vicki! she appears in a long sleeved black dress.i was delighted. :P

LOL...Well, Julia is one of the grandest ladies on that show.  :)  Overall, I agree, I like Julia's style...although there were moments when I think some of her outfits coulda been a little more flattering (including that robe (sorry)) ;) But I'm sure a few people out there could explain it a bit better than I.  ;)  :-*

Well, I tried to give my Julia doll some nice threads (in reference to the following pic - chuckle). I love arts and crafts... :D

LOL!  Intriguing critique, mscbryk. Was it the huge hypo that did it? Or was it her medallion, or the dress or... ;D
You can't see it in the picture, but she's also got some spiked heels on too--Julia's ready to go out on the town. :o  ;)  LOL

LOL.  "FEEL me!  FEEL me!"  (oh....the melodrama)   :o

Actually I believe it was a problem with the cobwebs blowing around that necessitated the AC shut off.

Ah, the memories.
