Title: DS ACTORS ON OTHER DAYTIME SERIALS
Post by: Sandor on May 28, 2004, 07:22:50 AM
Do fans on the Forum recall seeing their favorite DS actors and actresses on other daytime shows, either before or after the original series aired? I found a stack of old DAYTIME TV magazines from the late 60's and early 70's, went nuts and compiled a list of other afternoon shows the Dark Shadows actors appeared on (dates they appeared are not gospel). Hi, Sandor!  If I may add the "birthday boy", after Willie was shot JOHN KARLEN went to Love Is a Many Splendored Thing to play Jock Porter in '67 - '68.  In '70 he appeared on Another World in a smaller role as Casey.

Quote
JOEL CROTHERS (Joe):
The Secret Storm, as Ken Stevens (69)
Somerset, as Julian Cannell (74)
The Edge Of Night, as Miles Cavanaugh (77)
Santa Barbara (85)

Quote
DONNA WANDREY (Roxanne):
As The World Turns, as Barbara Ryan (72)
Edge of Night, Allison Perry (80)
Another World, Angie (76)
Ryan's Hope, a doctor (77)

Quote
MARIE WALLACE (Eve):
Somerset, as India Delaney (70)
Guiding Light as Johnsie (90)

Quote
JAMES STORM (Gerard):
One Life To Live, as Dr. Larry Wolek (68)
The Bold & the Beautiful, Bill Spencer (80s, 90s, 2000, 2003)
Sunset Beach, Charles Lakin (97-98)
Secret Storm, Sean Childers (71)
Young & the Restless, Neil Fenmore (83-86)
Capitol (86)

TERRY CRAWFORD made a one-time appearance on General Hospital in 2002.  JOAN BENNETT also made a one-time appearance on Guiding Light in '82 or '83 as Joan Bennett, who once starred on DS.  :)

I read in the DS FAQ that Thayer David did an episode of General Hospital.  Does anyone remember this?

Vestoff took over the part after Hubbard left it. But Hubbard came back after Vestoff left to do DS. (You must have missed the Vestoff article that was posted on the forum in 02/01, back in the VantageNet days.  ;)  But it'll probably be posted again in the Members' Archive...)

He was actually the second Dr. Larry Wolek. The first was Paul Tulley, who lasted about a month. James Storm then took over, with Michael Storm taking over in 1969.

Nice research and recollections! Now using the SIX DEGREES (OR LESS) OF SEPARATION from DS and these other serials, I offer these shocking headlines, and then the stories behind them:

"JOE HASKELL GIVEN LSD BY ZIRA FROM PLANET OF THE APES!"
Actually, Joel Crothers' character (Miles on The Edge of Night) had a hallucinogenic slipped into his water cooler by movie actress Kim Hunter (who played Zira in 'Apes,' but also portrayed demented Nola Madison on 'Edge'). His freak-out scenes were reminiscent of when Dr. Hoffman prepared to send poor Joe off to Wyndecliff - pass the hypodermic needle, please.

"SABRINA STUART MURDERS TOMMY LEE JONES!"
On One Life To Life, Lisa Richards' character, Susan, a lovelorn nurse, accidentally shot and killed Tommy Lee Jones' character, the adulterous Dr. Mark Toland, in a struggle for the gun at a motel on the outskirts of town. Later, Susan was run over by a car and died in a dramatic finale. As Sabrina, she had better times with a wolf for a boyfriend.

"JEB HAWKES ENTERS THE POLITICAL RING!"
Fans of General Hospital may recall Chris Pennock as slimy Mitch Williams, who used bitchy but wealthy Tracy Quartermaine to fund his political campaign, while also carrying on a bold affair with Susan Moore, the town tramp. Mitch eventually got the heave-ho from both ladies, though neither had a Widow's Hill from which to throw him.

"ROGER COLLINS AND THE COLLINS FAMILY LAWYER, MR. GARNER, WED THE SAME WOMAN!"
Yes, gang, on All My Children, both Louis Edmonds (as Langley) and Hugh Franklin (as Dr. Charles Tyler) had the distinction of being married to Ruth Warrick's indomitable Phoebe, though mercifully not at the same time.

"ARISTEDE IS DIXIE CARTER'S BROTHER!"
On The Edge Of Night, Michael Stroka played a character named Quentin (coincidence, or perhaps homage to DS?), who was the brother of Brandy, played by Designing Woman Dixie Carter. Sadly, Quentin (like most characters on 'Edge') wound up murdered, but his character wasn't really a bad guy - unless one dislikes psychiatrists who chase married women.

Any other storyline memories of our DS faves in other roles out there? Don't be shy.

In 1984, When Robert Gerringher was on The Edge of Night (the same time Joel Crothers was on) he try to woo the character Lois Kibbee played.

Lois Kibbee also co-authored a book with Joan Bennett.

:o  WOW!  Most interesting. Since I've never watched soaps with any regularity, I was amazed at the number of DS actors who were involved. The ony one I can say for sure that I remember is James Storm as Dr. Larry Wolek. Then his brother took over the role.
Thanks for the info, I'm impressed!

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Humbert Allen Astredo?  Seems as if I recall reading that in 1969 or 1970, during one of his breaks from DS, he played an interior decorator on another soap.  Gods, what I would give to see him in action in such a role...

Just imagine the sinister sound "fuchsia," "peach," and "burgundy" would have rolling off that wicked tongue!

THE SECRET STORM was one of those dark, overly melodramatic soaps full of organ music and over-the-top characters (Diana Millay played, best to my knowledge, the neurotic girlfriend of a Mafia drug-dealer - but by the time her character, Kitty, was written off [she had shot and killed someone], the role was taken over by actress Diane Ladd).
The opening credits were similiar to "Dark Shadows," with the crashing waves over the ocean rocks. Joel Crothers and Clarice Blackburn were on the show during the same period - and in one article, it was mentioned how Clarice, after being killed off on "Secret Storm," returned for a day as a ghost, and that same week, showed up on DS during the 1995 storyline, where she was also bumped off as Mrs. Johnson.
STORM ended its run in 1974 - and is best remembered as the serial where JOAN CRAWFORD substituted for her ailing daughter, Christina, for a week in 1968. My theory is Joan C. was inspired by Joan Bennett's willingness to try daytime.
Could you imagine Joan CRAWFORD as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard??!! Scary thought.

I would love to see the Joan Crawford episodes of Secret Storm.

I heard that Dan Curtis was also considering her for the role of Elizabeth prior to the start of DS.

She may not have lasted too long though.

Concerning Search for Tomorrow, around the time that Denise Nickerson was playing Liza, Michael Maitland was hired to play Bruce Carson.    He played Bruce in between Robby Benson and Gary Tomlin.

Also, I think that Kitty Styles and Ken Stevens (Diana Millay and Joel Crothers) were on The Secret Storm at the same time.

When Christopher Pennock was on Somerset, Frank Schofield played his father.       The actor who played Carter Mattson (Jay Gregory) had also been on Dark Shadows as an extra.   Lois Kibbee played the wife/stepmother, and she, as was mentioned, co-wrote The Bennett Playbill with Joan Bennett.

The information on Jonathan Frid is incorrect.    He did appear as Dr. Bellows on As the World Turns - not Dr. Neil Wade.     That role was played by Michael Lipton, who was also on Somerset when Mr. Schofield and Mr. Pennock were on the show.    (And Marie Wallace had been on the show, also.)

As the World Turns also had a mean character named Dr. Michael Shea.     John Lasalle (Dr. Gutherie) was one of the actors who played that role, but the actor best remembered in the role is the late Roy Shumann.

When Sam Hall was writing One Life to Live, there were three former Dark Shadows performers on the show at the same time:     Nancy Barrett, Anthony George, and Grayson Hall.    There was a scene in which the three were together - possibly in an elevator - and they commented that they thought that they had known each other before they had been in Llanview.

Matthew Hall was also a writer for One Life to Live.    He later wrote for the NBC primetime version of the Dark Shadows.

The Moore family on Somerset:

I left out one of the most important member of the family:  Julian Cannell (Joel Crothers).

So, the family consisted of Emily Moore Matson (Lois Kibbee), her husband Philip Matson (Frank Schofield), Emily's daughter Andrea Moore and son Dana Moore (Christopher Pennock), Philip's daughter Zoe Matson Cannell and her husband Julian (who was a concert pianist but later was a newspaper editor), and his son Carter Mattson (Jay Gregory).     There was also Aunt Rowena (Camilla Ashland).

Their storyline MAY have begun before the departure of Marie Wallace as India Bishop Delaney - but I am not sure.

Also on Somerset were Dolph Sweet and Dennis Patrick.     Mr. Sweet, Mr. Patrick, and Ms. Wallace were all on the show at the same time.

And later, Stanley Grover was on the show.   (And Nancy Barrett for a few days.)

Carolyn Groves (Victoria #3) had played Betsy Brown on The Edge of Night in 1963.

(She was also in the movie Six Degrees of Seperation as a party guest.)

I also forgot to mention that, on The Secret Storm, Joel Crothers's character, Ken, was married.     There was a young concert pianist named Laurie who fell in love with him.     Laurie's father was insistant that his daughter stay away from Ken.      The father was named Wilifred Hollister, and he was played by Bernard Hughes, who had been on Dark Shadows.

Also, Mr. Hughes had played a doctor on The Guiding Light for many years.

Also on The Secret Storm, Robert Costello was the producer of the show after the cancellation of Strange Paradise.     And Lovelady Powell, who had played the art dealer who wanted Sam's paintings on Dark Shadows (Portia Fitzsimmons?) played a character named Birdie.     Birdie was also involved with Joel Crothers's character.    Ken's ex-wife Jill married Birdie's brother.

An observation concerning Anthony George.  Everyone has discussed his participation on DS and his longest running soap role on OLTL.  His biggest soap role was Dr. Tony Vincente on Search for Tomorrow (April 1970 to June 1975).  He was the male lead on that opposite Mary Stuart as Joanne.  I just finished R. J. Jamison's excellent bio on Grayson Hall and had to chuckle that he suggested a romance opposite Grayson.  Maybe he was thinking that an onscreen romance with another redhead equals chemistry!  Tony abruptly quit SFT in 1975 and with that exit ended his status as a leading man.

Here are a couple of late editions.

In the early 1970's, Jerry Lacy played Simon Gilbey on As the World Turns. Gilbey was a millionaire who was trying to manipulate his niece Meredith Harcourt. Jerry was in a cast photo was made the cover of TV Guide.

Lara Parker did at least one day on One Life to Live back in the mid 1980's. Don't remember the name of her character but I think she was being scammed by Mitch Laurence.

Clarice Blackburn appeared on One Life to Live in the mid 1970's as Hattie Fredericks. She was Dorian and Melinda Cramer's housekeeper. It was not much of a part and the character disappearanced pretty quickly.

Humbert Allen Astredo did a day on Edge of Night as the captain of a boat that rescued Adam Drake from a shipwreck.

I'd love to see Astredo in a captain's uniform, with yards of gold braid up the side and down the front.
