There's this website with a "mind reading" type game.
http://www.funnyjunk.com/pages/mindreader.htm
For the life of me, I cannot figure out how they are doing this. I've tested and tested it and it always "reads my mind".
I thought maybe a computer wiz out there (Hi MB....) would be able to solve the mystery.
It's really driving me crazy. I keep waiting for it to make a mistake and it never does.
Sorry if this is too OT. I just didn't know where else to ask. There is obviously SOMETHING mathematical to it, but I don't see what it would be.

Raholt figured it out a while back.
Of all the possible numbers you can begin with, there's a limited number of answers that can result from the calculation, and actually the answer will always be a multiple of 9. Though the symbols appear to be random, each time you refresh the page by clicking the crystal ball, the symbols next to the multiples of 9 (9, 18, 27, etc.) will become a new symbol that they'll all share.
In other words, you click the crystal ball and all multiples of 9 might then have a book next to them. Next time, they all might have a star next to them, and so on.

OMG! I get it. (took me a couple of minutes) lol Thanks Midnite.
I never noticed that each time the page was refreshed the symbols next to the numbers changed. That might have given me a clue to something. (probably not, though) [lghy] I feel like such a jerk. I should have been able to figure this out by myself.
THANK you.

I never noticed that each time the page was refreshed the symbols next to the numbers changed.
But since only 9 of the numbers have changing symbols, it's not something that's easily noticed. The rows are even arranged so that none of those fall in the top and bottom rows. It's a slick trick. ;)
You're welcome, but I was just channeling Raholt's explanation from when this came up before on the forums. :D

I checked it out last night after reading the original question and explanation. There is also the fact that these aren't very "normal" symbols. It's not like an obvious picture that you might remember was with a certain number. One has to sort of "study" them to even remember what they are when the answer comes up!

I haven't tried this test yet, but I think I have tried it a while back or one like it. I used to know some "magic" tricks that boggled the mind too, but I don't have the info any more and don't remember where I got it.
There was an Internet "trick" that I received a few years ago that was really amazing. There was sort of a story in short sentences that you were supposed to read while continually scrolling down. At the very end you were supposed to suddenly say the name of a vegetable -- which had NOTHING to do with anything at all -- a complete non sequitur. Then, you scrolled down further, and it said:
"The vegetable you thought of was a carrot, wasn't it."
It was for me and for everyone I knew who tried it!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

But, Vlad - the really important question is: Did you know the "Magic Number Of The Universe"?

I remember that one too Vlad! I got it myself awhile back and like you, picked the "carrot." I couldn't figure out why though? That was a strange one. ???

Thank you, Cassandra - it sounds like fun!

Googled it...

Thank you, Midnite! But how did you google it? Does it come up for "carrot"?
It's a shame I knew the answer, as I have no idea what I would have said on my own. The number did come out right - no idea why. On that I really could have easily chosen something else. I would guess that on my own I would NOT have said carrot, but I'll never know!!

You're welcome!
I searched using "you're thinking of a carrot". The quotation marks are important. As for how I remembered that line, I couldn't tell you. My brain stores the darnest things and makes room by ejecting the important stuff. ::)

;D ;D
I showed it to my aunt - she came up with a different number and she said "broccoli"!!!
