Title: Humor on Dark Shadows
Post by: Julian on February 27, 2004, 04:41:21 PM
This came up on another thread, but I was thinking about humor on Dark Shadows (not the blooper kind, but situations or dialog that struck me as funny)  The other day I saw on DVD the scene where poor Willie has been gunned down outside Maggie's door and is believed to be the kidnapper.  Barnabas has a scene with Julia where he is really behaving badly and is very put out with Willie for lingering on even after being plugged by several bullets.  He makes some sort of comment about how he expects any minute to hear that Willie is sitting up and writing his memoirs.  That line and the way Frid delivers it always cracks me up.  Then there is another Frid moment when he's out at Widows Hill with Julia when Vicki comes along.  Barn wants Julia to leave so he can be alone with Vicki, Julia is dragging her feet, and Frid says - I think you'd better go inside before you catch a cold - you know how concerned I am about your health.  The way he says the part about being concerned about her health and the look on his face is another moment that makes me laugh.  Can anyone think of any other moments or dialog like this  that struck them as funny?

What a great idea for a thread, Julian! My own favorites tend to involve Mr. Frid also, no surprise there.

In fact, in that first scene you mention I think Barnabas says something about Willie "clinging to life like a leech". LOL!

And I love the scene where Tony Peterson is accusing Barnabas of having an affair with Carolyn. Tony, not being taken very seriously by Barnabas, says something like, "I don't enjoy being laughed at, Mr. Collins."

And Frid delivers the line so perfectly: "Then you shouldn't go around being so amuuuusing, Mr. Peterson."
Oh, that cracked my s*** right up!

One more: Love it when Julia and Barn are locking up Chris in the mausoleum during those moonlit nights and she worries that if the police find out that they may be accused of "harboring a werewolf" or words to that affect. That, IMHO, is one of the funniest ideas on the show ever!

For me, it's the scene (one of my favorite DS scenes) when Judith reads Grandmamamama's will to her brothers.  Quentin can only find ironic humor in sister getting all the goodies, while the brothers get virtually nothing.  When Edward reacts in his typical incensed anger, that only eggs Quentin on.  When he does that wild, exaggerated:  "Why, I think I'm going to cry!" I just fall on the floor myself.

The scene with Barnabs complaining about Willie writing his memoirs cracks me up too.  ;D

Another memorable scene between Willie and Barnabas occurs while Tom Jennings is preying on Julia.  Barnabas frets about how her weakened condition will affect the experiment. "Is that all you're worried about?" Willie presses.  He proceeds to egg  Barnabas on, trying to get him to admit to his feelings for Julia, but the man is either too dense or too stubborn to pick up on the hints.  Finally, exasperated, he demands, "Are you trying to be profound, Willie?"  That particular interaction--the dramatic irony, the dialogue, and the nature of the characters struck me as being funny.

As has been mentioned, Roger's sarcasm could be very humorous.  When parapsychologist Dr. Guthrie was called in to help a stricken Elizabeth, a dubious Roger suggested, "Why not do a voodoo dance around her hospital bed chanting semi-gutteral noises?" [lghy]

Prof. Stokes could also be very witty and sarcastic.  His first visit to Barnabas at the Old House, his showdowns with Angelique/Cassandra, and his semi-pompous, matter-of-fact reaction to the general weirdness at Collinwood always make me smile.

Carl Collins's practical jokes offered welcome comic relief.

Some scenes come across as humorous to me just because of the situation, the timing, and the presentation by the actors.  I found the interactions between screw-up sidekick Aristede and Count Petofi to be funny, as well as some of the scenes between Bruno and Jeb.  (e.g. "Don't worry--you've got Bruno!)  Seeing anybody outwit Angelique or one of the Trasks makes me laugh.  Even if these instances weren't written with the purpose of being humorous, the execution of the scenes or the poetic justice made them that way.

"He clings to life with a leech like persistance" was a good one, and willie writing his memoirs was good also.  It is also ironic that B would complain that Willie clings to life, when he himself would do about anything to stay "alive", including knocking off an innocent although meddling David.

Yeah. How about when Sam Evans, while in the Blue Whale, drink in hand, looks out the window and exclaims, "Look! A bat!!!"

I'm thinking that perhaps one reason 1897 (and perhaps Quentin Collins - his good looks not withstanding) became so popular and really propelled DS in the ratings was because the injection of purposeful humor into the show. Though there were several humorous (intentional or not) moments on the show prior to 1897, it was, IIRC, primarily very serious and heavy-hearted (not to mention preposterous - think 1968, IMHO). And again, IIRC, the show never went to that humorous place again.

Adding to my list of favorite humorous moments posted in the other topic, I would add several moments between Magda and Sandor, and pre-werewolf Quentin in the 1897 eps.

ProfStokes reminded me just how wonderfully humorous Professor Stokes quips could be. One of my faves being when he arrived in 1840 via the Stairway through time. Julia was talking about a female involved in the mix of things at Collinwood (I can't recall who) mentioning her Victorian "presence" and Stokes made some comment that knocked me out of my chair. I'm sorry I can't remember it other than to say it was flawlessly delivered by Thayer David. As a matter of fact Thayer's delivery of his lines throughout this scene were quite priceless, most of them funny as heck.

Another of my fave Thayer scenes was of Daniel Collins and Sandor in the cottage. Sandor scares the crap out of Daniel with a cryptic warning of some sort, finishing off his threat with a creepy laugh - Daniel flees in terror. And Sandor laughs to himself at the thought of it all. Am I recalling this correctly? Surely someone has a more precise memory of this scene. It's one of my (many) all-time faves.

And lastly, though it was not meant to be funny at all, just about every scene between Eve and Adam split my sides. Marie Wallace's delivery of her lines concerning Adam and her proposed relationship with him just killed me. Being perhaps the only thing that got me through that (IMHO) wretched storyline. If I had the know-how and software to do so, I'd love to create a comedic music "video" of Eve's & Adam's scenes together (muted) with the Carpenters song For All We Know for the audio.

Great topic, Julian!

Two more -  ;D

There is a scene during the Bill Malloy period in which I believe Bill Malloy and Roger (or was it Sam) meet up in the diner. They start bantering, with Maggie practically situated between them, and she starts to say something and she's cut off by Malloy, I believe. Maggie's reaction to being dismissed like a child is both flawless and priceless and had me rewinding the video and laughing out loud with each viewing.

The other is a scene that takes place in the drawing room of Collinwood. Roger has Viki cornered ready to grill her about Burke Devlin as Liz protests vehemently. The scene has to be seen to be appreciated but basically we see Liz and Roger fighting tooth and nail about it and then all of a sudden Liz relents and offers a polite "good night" to Miss Winters and strolls out as if she were walking past Kay Jewelers on her way to Tiffany's . The turnabout was so abrupt and ludicrous that it made me roll. It has to be seen to be believed.

Okay, I lied. One more humorous constant in the earlier eps is Liz's cure-all for tense situations - tea! The one scene I remember is one where Carolyn is in hysteria and depressed about her life and Liz offers to make tea - it's another scene that has to be seen to be appreciated for it's outrageousness and humor.

Sorry I can't remember the specific dialog for all these scenes I'm mentioning in this thread. But it's these moments that make me dearly love this show, compelling me to participate.

The early (RT) Flora Collins was often humorous.  As the story progressed, she became caught up in the tragedies occurring, and became a more "normal" character, but in the first part of the story she was so much fun.  I'm sure there were a number of specifically humorous lines, but I can't recall anything at the moment.

LOL! That's funny you should mention this because I was watching this very same scene while I was reading this!  Talk about coincidence!!    That scene in particular struck me funny as well because moments before Sam said that line he and the sherrif were sitting in the Blue Whale when they suddenly heard a woman screaming frantically outside.  The sherrif ran outside to investigate then came back in and said "nothing to worry about, just some woman afraid of a bat!!"    Sam made some comment like "oh, is that all??"  Then two seconds later as they proceed to leave, a bat appears outside the window to which Sam yells, "Look, a bat!!!"  He had such a look of fright on his face. ???

Dom, That was Jamison you were talking about.   And you're right, that was a good funny scene.  I think any scene in which Sandor was in was pretty hysterical! He was a hoot!!

Another scene I thought was funny happened a couple of weeks after Maggie had returned home after her kidnapping & Wyncliff ordeal and had returned to normal.  Joe had come to visit and mentioned to her and Sam that the sherrif was still out searching for Maggie's kidnapper.  Sam replied, "and as usual he didn't find anything."   Then Maggie replied, "I just don't understand that sherrif, he's always out there searching and searching and never comes up with anything!"  LOL!!!  I have to agree with her on that one!

And who can forget that famous "incestor/ancestor" line by Roger in the Masoleum!!

I also enjoyed alot of the scenes between Jason Maguire and Willie.  One scene in particular stands out for me although it was meant to be far from humorous.  Jason was nagging Willie about his nightly activities involving the Collins Masoleum and wanted to know what he was up to.  He then accused Willie of "stooping so low as to rob a stiff!"

Duh! Thanks for the correction. You know, I had originally written David instead of Daniel, and was so glad I caught the error before I posted it. LOL. Not only can I not remember the dialog, I can't even remember the names!

It never occured to me until now, is Jamison of 1897 Liz's and Roger's father?

There is a scene between Carolyn and Julia. . I don't know if it was early in the show or during Leviathan when Carolyn is talking about something being "divine" but Julia retorts. . it doesn't sound all that deeeeVINE. . .and another scene with Willie and Julia where she is admonishing him for being late or not doing something. . i can't recall her exact words but her lines to him about "nowhere being a large place" or something along those lines were pretty funny

I think Joshua Collins had some of the best comedic lines during 1795. Two of them come to mind...when he barks .."what makes you think I want to hear this taawwdry story..!!" at Nathan Forbes when Nathan was trying to get Joshua not to send a complaint against him to the navy after the Suki Forbes fiasco and snarking at Naomi and Abigail if he can't have a "conversation in the house without the women hiding in corners listening to every word I say??"
I don't know if was the dialogue or Louis Edmonds razor sharp delivery that cracked me up.

There are just so many:

I have to agree about Jason - the writers gave him such great and witty dialogue and Dennis Patrick milked it for all it was worth. I think I laugh out loud over something Jason says in almost every one of his scenes.

I also have to agree about Prof Stokes' first visit to the Old House. His rambling on about the architecture and a drunken furniture maker as Barnabas stands by anxious to get on with things - too funny. And another great Stokes moment is when Cassandra discovers the very much alive Stokes at the Evans cottage, and Stokes tells her to give Vicki the message that her copy of the 18th century portrait of Angelique is a fake because he's discovered the original. The expressions on both their faces after that remark are priceless.

Also have to agree with Eve's scenes where she pretends to be in love with Adam. One of the best of those has to be when Eve cuddles with Adam while secretly making plans to be with "Peter". Every time I see the expression on Marie Wallace's face, it never fails to make me laugh because she's so into being evil and duping Adam.

And again I have to agree about the reading of Edith's will and what transpires afterward. But I think my absolute favorite scene in that ep is when the newly powerful Judith has Edward dragged out of bed in the middle of the night just so she can inform him that she's moving into Edith's room - another priceless scene!

One of the most unintentionally funny moments in 1897 occurs in a scene that takes place in the cottage between Frid and RD when RD completely screws up the dialogue. Barnabas instructs Dirk to, "Tell them that you saw no one here."  To which Davis as Dirk says, "Oh that's fine, what am I gonna tell em?" Barnabas replys, "That you saw no one here!" - but he does it in such an exasperated tone that you can't help but see that Frid is really peeved at Davis.  :D

I love when Barnabas' confronts Lamar at the Trask chapel after Barnabas had escaped from being imprisoned by Trask. Frid's glee and Jerry Lacy's terror are just so evident that you can't help but laugh along with Barnabas' obvious enjoyment in getting the upper hand again.

And the sparring between Gabriel and Samantha. Did two other characters ever hate each other as much as those two? It's just such fun to watch.

But I think my two absolute favorite scenes have to be 1) in 1897 when Quentin writhes in agony while Laura glibly recounts the story of her "death" in Alexandria. Diana Millay is such a hoot in that scene - and 2) (do I even have to say it? [wink2]) of course it's when Roger calls Jeb "a cheap, insufferable pig!" [lghy]

Doesn't Roger take Liz by the arm or shoulder and physically lead her out of the room to get rid of her? Maybe I'm thinking of another scene, but if not I think that's the funniest part of it all.  ;)

Could very well be, and sounds likely. I can see Roger closing the drawing room doors behind her. Poor Viki!

Another hillarious scene is when Charity/Pansey bumps Trask with her hip during one of her many performances of I Want To Dance With you, in the foyer. That scene always makes me think of RobinV, and gets me howling with laughter!

And many of Roger's references to his son during the early eps, "The little monster", "Give him a kick for me", etc.

And in the interest of not going on endlessly, I'll make my last post in this topic with my all-time favorite moment in the show (which always cracks me up), when Liz turns to Roger in episode one and says, "Because I choose to do so!"

What a fun topic!

If I may add a few personal faves--

Constable Carter is investigating the accident and is completely oblivious to the fact that David is staring uneasily at the wrench in his hands.  He addresses the boy but David is too terrified to speak, which Carter dismisses with, "He's probably just impressed with the dignity of my badge."

Roger and Liz are bickering in front of Frank Garner, and they're giving him contradictory instructions, so Roger snaps, "Whose divorce IS this, anyway?"

Vicki comments that Barn seems very taken with the night and Julia replies with something like, "He's certainly the most dedicated night person I know."

Vicki is shocked after meeting Nicholas, and Carolyn tells her that if Lucretia Borgia could have a brother, Cassandra could too.

Magda is cleaning the Old House and exasperatedly tells Jamison that Barnabas "has brought me something called 'the wax for the floors!'"  (I would've liked to have seen her when she was using it, snicker.)

Chris tells Barnabas that Ned "is going to hound me and hound me until he kills me!"

David reveals to Hallie that he had a dream about her.  She says, "Lots of boys have dreams about me."  David adds, "Yeah, but they don't try to go back to sleep afterwards."

There is a scene which Barnabas has given Vickie a history book from the old house, but B was not gonna give it to her, but Vicki sees it dedicated to her, and asks why he wasnt going to give it to her, Burke chimes in that Vicki should get off the "hickory history kick". The expression of Barnabas face is great, it looks as though he looked at the cue card and rolls his eyes at the error. Another one is when Vicki is comforting David because David is frightened of the B portrait, he says the eyes are blaring blazing at him. Next time you watch that scene, watch Vickies face break into a smile, and covers her face to keep from laughing, trying to fight off the giggles.

Yeah, Josette, I remember reading about Roger's incestuous tendencies but I never really "put it together". I just figured Laura was Laura was Laura was Laura was Laura was Laura was Laura was Laura. I also know that I knew Jamison was Liz's & Roger's father but I never thought about it enough to realize that the Jamison in 1897 was he. How fun though to know now. I like realizing stuff like this because now when I watch 1897 the next time, it will be like watching with a different set of eyes. I'll be thinking, "Hey, that Liz's and Roger's father." I should be embarrassed, but I'm a silver lining kind of guy. ;)

PS - Thanks for answering my question as well, VW. :)

I often like watching things a 2nd or 3rd time, particularly mysteries.  It's fun to see all the clues and developments once one knows what's really happening.  While there's nothing mysterious about this, it certainly provides a different perspective.  I always wonder when watching Jamison, trying to picture him as their father.  I always assumed their father would be rather stiff and unyielding, but watching the young Jamison, I can't picture him growing up like that.

LOL!!  How can I forget that one!!  That had to be one of the funniest scenes that I've seen on DS!!

Another funny one that I just thought of was during the 1795 storyline when Angelique was weaving a spell to cast on Josette.  Ben had come to her room with a spiders web and wanted to know what she was planning on doing with it.  She remarked that she was going to make a dress out of it, to which he replied, " a dress? I'd like to see you wearing it!"  LOL!  From the look on her face she wasn't too happy with his remark.

During the Adam storyline when the sheriff and his men were all out searching for Adam.  The sherrif and his group were in the woods and could see the old house up in the distance.  The sheriff then pointed to the house and remarked, "everytime there's trouble, it always seems to point to that house!!"   So true!!

This one surely wasn't meant to be funny but I had to laugh just the same:  After Dr.Lang's death, Julia had confronted Cassandra and was giving her a piece of her mind.  Cassandra then accused Julia of being in love with Barnabas.  Then Julia replied, "not nearly as much as you!!"  And then of course there was that famous b - slap!

1795 - Lt.Forbes is trying desperately to win over Millicent's affections and Millicent is talking about her lawyer and how he always gives her good advice.  Forbes then replies that he's probably in love with her too. To which Millicent laughingly replies, "my lawyer?  He's over 70 years old!!"

A few of my favorite funny moments:

Referring to Willie, the Eagle Hill caretaker says, "He did something terrible!  He pretended to be something that he wasn't!" to which Jason replies, "If that were a crime, we'd all be in jail."

When tellling Julia about his dream, Eric Lang states that Julia was in the dream, but said nothing.  Julia cracks (and I wonder if Grayson ad-libbed this), "Well, that proves it was a dream!"

Barnabas referring to the zombified Quentin as "a mindless hulk."  Don't know why, but that always cracks me up.

Barnabas tells Julia she's being "peevish," and she shoots back, "PEEV-ish?!?!?"

Mrs. Johson asks David if he has seen her cigarettes and he replies, "Well, are you supposed to be smoking while you're working?"

And my absolute favorite:

Barnabas is in the Old House, speaking to someone, when a car horn is heard.  Barnabas leans out the door of the Old House and calls, "Just a moment, Julia!  I'll be right there!"  IMHO, this was the funniest moment in all of DS.  In fact, I'm laughing while writing this.  I always imagine an impatient Julia at the wheel of the car, with cigarette in hand, rolling her eyes and muttering epithets.  Also, I find the scene to be rather out of character for DS.  While cars have been featured on the show on several occasions, the inclusion of a car horn in this episode strikes me as odd, especially since Barnabas and Julia are not shown in the car.  (I believe that Grayson wasn't even in this episode!)  Furthermore, I've always felt that the world of DS one of great politeness.  Honking a horn in order to rush someone along doesn't feel authentic to the DS universe.

Regards,

John

Thanks for mentioning that one.  I thought it was a rare moment of Barnabas being playful with Julia instead of threatening.

There is a scene in 1795 that tickled me.  Ben tells an upset Angelique that Josette and Barnabas went off riding together.  He smiles and asks if it would help her if he got the horses names.

LOL!!!!  That was a good one!  Thanks for reminding me of this one and I sure would have loved to see her using it too.

Another good one I just remembered was when Julia was trying her hardest to discourage Dr.Woodard's curiousity about the ghost of Sarah.  Dr.Woodard had mentioned that Sam Evans had also seen Sarah so she must exist and wasn't just a figment of little David's imagination, as everyone originally thought.  Julia then went on to mention that Sam Evans is a heavy drinker and then replied, "some people see pink elephants, Sam Evans just happens to see ghosts!"   LOL!!!  I still laugh whenever I think of her saying that line.

1795 - After witnessing the hand of Jeremiah emerging out of his grave, Naomi & Josette run frantically back to the old house where Joshua Collins & Andre Dupree await them.  When explaining why they were out so late, Naomi says she was just "sitting there in the chair" when she saw Josette leave the house and then followed her.  Joshua then spots the half empty glass of sherry by the chair and replies, "indeed you were my dear."  When Naomi explains that "she only had half a glass"  Joshua replies, "around a quarter of a bottle I should say!"   Then he holds up the glass and exclaims, "maybe I should open up my own bottle so I can start seeing hands appearing out of the ground and who knows what other imaginable things!"
I loved the sarcastic wit that Louis Edmonds sometimes used while playing Joshua Collins.  You couldn't help but laugh.

I love the little scene in 1897 where Quentin has come home and he goes upstairs to see Grandma.  She's been anxiously awaiting Edward's return so she can tell him the secret.
Quentin enters her room and she doesn't realize it's him.  She says:  "Edward.  Thank God.....thank God.  Now I can die."
Quentin goes:  "You're quite right, Grandmama.  Seeing Edward IS reason enough to die!"  [lghy]

dom, your mention of Sandor reminded me of another favorite, funny scene which occurs just after Sandor has tangled with zombie Quentin.

Magda is pacing at the Old House, crying and berating Barnabas for sending her husband out to die.  When Sandor stumbles in from the graveyard, she runs to him with relief and delight, but then quickly changes her attitude, teasing Sandor and calling him, "My big fat hero."  Not only was this exchange funny, but I felt it captured the dynamic of Magda and Sandor's relationship: genuine affection mingled with gentle teasing.

Another funny moment that I've remembered happened in 1795.  Abigail is rambling about the presence of evil and criticizing Naomi for drinking, which she believes to be yet another sign of the devil's influence.  To this, Naomi insightfully replies, "I find it curious that the devil has informed you of so many of his plans."  ;D

Grayson put a lot of wit into her lines in certain scenes, as did Joan.  I loved it when Julia and Carolyn are discussing the new antique shop that's just opened in town; Carolyn's raving about how "divine" it is and then says something else about it, to which Julia ripostes "you don't make it SOUND very 'dee-VINE'" with this Holly Golightly elevated-eyebrow face that never fails to crack me up.

A lot of Magda's funniest moments were non-verbal.  I remember one scene where she's waiting for Barn to come out of his coffin with a very arch expression on her face and hands planted firmly on hips that's a scream.  Her shuffling of the tarot cards in a scene with Laura at the cottage is wonderful too and always indues fits of cackling.

Joan had so many fabulous moments in the first year of the series.  A great one from 1897 is a certain scene where rings up her husband, "Reverend" Gregory Trask, and informs him that thanks to certain arrangements she's made, he now has all the time he needs to meditate.  I just love Joan's delivery of that line and the expression on her face--it's the embodiment of "the cat that ate the canary."  Flawless.

Thayer David as Prof Stokes had some memorable zingers, too, particularly during the Cassandra Collins storyline (my personal all-time favorite DS storyline).  I loved whenever he referred to Cassandra as "our favorite Witch" or mentioned his own "cat complex."

I just heard several hilarious lines while watching DVD collection 9 tonight:

Nicholas to Cassandra: "I'm too talented to be drugging drinks!"

Barnabas to Willie: "We'll deal with your mental abberations later." This is after Willie is telling Barnabas that Maggie would be interested in him if Joe wasn't around. There are so many funny Barnabas to Willie lines!!

Natalie du Pres had some very funny comments upon her arrival at the old House (which wasn't old at the time). IIRC they were jabs at the American way of life, which really ruffled Joshua's feathers in particular. Very funny stuff!

Another line that just tickles me is when Carolyn reacts rather hysterically on finding Joe at Collinwood, drunk as a skunk.  She says:  "Joe!  You're potted!"  I just love that term.

That's true. Like when she mentioned the Collins' chef wouldn't cook fish with wine because it was against her/his religious beliefs. Then she'd arch her eyebrows. I think both Natalie and Pop Dupres were written with lots of comedy touches probably to offset the vampire/witch drama.

I love the scene near the beginning of 1840 when Barnabas goes to the mortuary to view Ben Stokes' body.  He and Trask are having a little exchange when Trask starts talking about his illustrious father.  [sure]

Trask says, "My father was an emissary of the Almighty, sent to strike the cloven hoof from this poor wretched village."

Barnabas, vaguely amused, asks, "And was he successful?"

Love the scene in early '69 where a possessed David is playing a game of rubber darts in the Drawing Room, purposely annoying the hell out of Barnabas, who attempts to read the inscription on a pentagram: "To guard you from Cerberus." When Barn explains to an inquisitive David that Cerberus "was a wild dog who guarded the gates of hell," Carolyn enters (carrying a tray) and quips, "My, what cheerful conversation."
Other moments of levity were guaranteed when Magda was disgusted with someone, and Grayson would make one of those "hock a loogey" spitting sounds.
Don Briscoe's W.C. Fields impersonation was worth a chuckle (when he wasn't sounding like Gary Cooper), and let us not forget the classic Willie/Adam "taunting with a chicken leg" chase scene.

Just thought of another one from 1795 when Joshua and Jeremiah were conversing and Joshua was trying his darnest to have Jeremiah fall for cousin Millicent, saying all kinds of lovely things about her.   Jeremiah looks at Joshua and says, "well, I can tell she sure has won your heart!!"  Joshua then says, "I take it you meant that as a humorous remark,  it was your heart I hoping she would win."   LOL!  I just can't for the life of me picture ole Joshua trying to win over anyone's heart.

After sheriff Paterson tells Jason to leave Collinsport, Jason has willie meet him at the blue whale thinking willie has brought him a fortune in jewels, Jason- "Okay Mr Loomis Einstein, i bet your pockets are just bulging with jewels"  after Willie produces a single brooch, Jason says "i told you to dip your hand in that box and i meant it".

During the 1795 story, Angelique says "what shall i turn Josuha Collins into,  Ben?? (the only time i remember him gleefully approving her witchcraft), says "make him into a jackass, that's what i'd do, i'd work that jackass hard, make him clear the rocks out of the north field, just me and him, him pullin' them and me beating him good"

I LOVE that!  And Thayer David said it with such relish.

I forgot how many funny lines there were in the 1795 storyline until reading many of them above! I was laughing tonight when watching DVD collection 9--Julia and Willie find Barnabas dead outside the old house after he has just had the dream and the first thing Willie says is something like "Now we'll have to listen to those dogs howling again!" Too funny!

The more I watch these shows the more funny lines I've been noticing!
One in particular came to mind while I watching the 1795 storyline when the so called Rev Trask was grilling young Daniel about the evils of the "witch" and what the devil has taught him.  Daniel then looks at him and says, "the only one who looks like a devil around here is you!"  LOL!! I almost fell of my seat when I heard that one. Gotta hand it to the boy though because Trask certainly did look evil in that time!

Another one was when Barnabas was telling his mother Naomi about how he had asked Angelique to be his wife.  Naomi thought the whole thing strange but Barnabas kept insisting that this is what he wanted, to which Naomi then replied, "well a week ago you wanted Josette to be your wife!!"

I really got a laugh from the scene where Jerimaiah has Angelique in the grave and is dumping dirt on her. She summons Ben, and he's laughing at her until she tells him that Jeremiah knows that Ben helped her and now he will be after him too.

Ben is so funny in this scene, first laughing hysterically at Angy, then he's so scared that the ghost is going to be after him too.

Speaking of Stokes-----i always thought his laugh was the most realistic and funny------followed a close second tie between angelique and her evil little chuckle laugh and quentins roarasly evil and taunting laugh

"Sandor My Big Fat Hero!"

I always wonder if that was scripted or if Grayson ad-libbed that line.

The introduction of Mrs. Johnson was hilarious. We first met her in the diner after Bill Malloy was killed, and she ordered coffee from Maggie. Maggie tried to talk her into ordering a sandwhich and Mrs. Johnson went on and on about the mayonnaise being fresh; she always made her own fresh mayonnaise, Maggie tried to assure her that the mayonnaise was fresh. Well eventually Maggie brought out the sandwhich - Mrs. Johnson took one bit out of it, made a face and put it down.

Also the scene where Elizabeth interviews Mrs. Johnson for the housekeeper job was equally funny. It seemed more like Mrs. Johnson was interviewing Elizabeth than the other way around.

However, one of my all-time classic favorite humorous scenes was between Roger and Elizabeth, who went to inspect the room in the East wing where Vicki had been locked up by David (and seen the ghost of Bill Malloy). The siblings found seaweed on the floor where Vicki claimed to have seen a ghost. In uncharacteristic frankness, one turned to the other and point blank asked if they'd ever seen a  ghost in their lives. The reaction was basically "I haven't if you haven't." They snapped right back into their usual state of denial and walked out of the room.

LMAO! That was especially funny considering Mrs. Johnson's cooking abilities (or lack thereof) later on...  ;)
