Title: 'Penny Dreadful'
Post by: michael c on July 01, 2014, 06:37:09 PM
Great finale. I'm hoping for a new cast and story next season. Why muck this up with a sequel?

while the "Mina" storyline appears to have reached it's conclusion the episode left viewers with enough "cliffhangers" that one has to assume that the series will pick up where it left off with the same cast of characters...

perhaps new "supporting" characters and a new set of subplots but the main cast I believe is being held firmly in place.

I'm disappointed we never got to see the aftermath of the Dorian/Ethan hookup...

sort of a big ball to drop.

I was hoping that Ethan and Dorian would have another encounter in the finale, as well.  But the actor who plays Dorian said in an interview that they aren't over yet, so I'm sure they will meet again in season 2.   That is in fact one of the many plot threads to be taken up with this cast of characters next season.  If they wanted to make a different 'penny dreadful' ensemble spinoff after a few years that would be fine but we are not there yet and this show shouldn't try to be an 'American horror story' clone.

indeed earlier in the season I speculated that perhaps it would be a loosely connected "anthologized" series using the same cast each season but with different settings and storylines much like AHS...

but it would appear to be a more "straightforward" (if one can use that word for such a cacophonous story) narrative. and the Victorian setting already seems too strongly established to be changed without enormous fan outcry.

Showtime Boss on Penny Dreadful's Next Villain and ... (http://www.tvguide.com/News/Showtime-Penny-Dreadful-Dexter-1084638.aspx)

Interesting - though perhaps not surprising because there already seemed to be a bit of a rivalry with Venessa.

That is very cool, MB.  A certain scene in the finale episode was certainly loaded with foreshadowing... now we have a hint as to just what may have been going on there...

There's going to be a PD panel at that Comics thing in San Diego and the announcement graphic for it featured John Logan with head shots of Ethan, Dorian, and Victor.  I of course instantly thought "erotic three-way next season!  YESSS!"  because, again, that's how my brain works...

They are certainly three of the most attractive male actors around these days... and in such deliciously complementary ways!

so is there not to be a "vampire element" to it next season?

Wow!  Ferdinand may have been my favorite "guest" character last season so I'm THRILLED he's going to be a regular.  Yay! I also think the actress who plays Madam Kali is AWESOME.

Thanks for the link!

That is answered in this (among a lot of other things):

sort of amazing that at just 8 episodes this thing is already a "comic-con" headliner with a substantial (and almost "cult" like) following.

For those who wish to see it, the deleted scene from season 1 of PENNY DREADFUL screened at SDCC has been posted on Youtube.  The scene, though it was originally part of an early episode of the season (episode 2, I believe; it would have come, possibly, at the end) is being described as "spoilery" because it foreshadows developments to be played out in the new season next year:

It's also a bit spoilery (just a bit) for the first season finale episode.

I have to say, this clip really encapsulates just why this season gives off major DARK SHADOWS vibrations to me... I would submit that THIS is the direction anyone choosing to attempt to revive DS again should explore.  I personally feel that DS is probably better off resting on its laurels, at this point...

Very cool.  I saw some of the first series of VIKINGS but don't recall Miss Greene.  Perhaps she appeared in series 2.

I'm not one for award shows but if these dumb little things may anything to anyone in the industry, Eva Green deserves some kind of extra-special one for her performance in Penny Dreadful.

I don't want to read any more of this thread because I've not seen any of this series. I hate cliffhangers, especially ones that go unresolved. From what I've gathered, this season is s self contained story? If so, I'll watch it at my next opportunity.

Doctor and K9, the first season of PD comes to a natural conclusion, but the door is left open for a sequel.  I was actually quite pleased that writer/creator John Logan did NOT go for the wearisomely knee-jerk predictable end of season cliffhanger.

it's been a few months since I saw the final episode of season one but while there was not one big "who shot JR?" style cliffhanger there were several storylines that I felt were left suspended with the intent of being picked up in a second season.

certainly Brona and the "bride of Frankenstein" story was left hanging. the werewolf "reveal" did not happen til the final episode. there were lots of "mini" cliffhangers.

but it seems like the vampire and "Mina" element of it came to it's conclusion.
