Been wondering for a while...the Barn we see now...is he the one from 1970? (Yes, I do realize 1795/1840 & 1970 are same...but...)
Barn seems to have knowledge of Julia, etc, Gerard...does he just believe what 1970 Julia taught him...or, did 1970 Barn also travel the stairway...and if so..what became of 1840 Barn.
I wondered more after today's ep...Barn says something to the effect, "We came to accomplish" to Julia.
If he was still the same 1840, he wouldn't have come....ya know?

I think you're asking if the Barnabas we're currently seeing on the show somehow travelled thru time to be in 1840; as of course he actually was alive in that year.
When Julia first got to 1840 (via the stairway thru time), she insisted on unchaining Barnabas from his coffin, against the better judgment of Ben Stokes. As Ben predicted, the 1840 Barnabas, not knowing Julia, was closer to the ruthless, vengeful and predatory Barnabas of late stage 1795/96 than the 'modern' Barnabas that Julia knew.
After this, it was the 1840 Barnabas who bit Roxanne, and was pretty much planning to kill Julia. Just as he was about to choke the life out of the good doctor, he fell to the floor unconcious. When he opened his eyes, he was posessed by 1970 Barnabas, who had travelled to 1840 to posess his body via the I-Ching.
Hope this answers your question!

PS...why (anybody?) was he planning to kill Julia? Too much 'conscience'?

Oh I know the answer to this one, Barnabas was planning to dispose of Julia because she knew of his being a Vampire, he felt she was a danger to his existence, this 1840 Barnabas knew nothing of Julia and so felt threatened by her, despite what Ben had told him.

And don't forget that he also did the same thing in 1967 when he found out that Julia knew his secret, only this time he spared her. ;)

Plus she was trying to help Roxanne survive his a bitin' ways. . .nothing could piss a hungry vampire off more than his meal not succumbing. . .So Julia was a goner . .EXCEPT folks. . he was going to BITE her in 1840. . he was going for her neck with his fangs. The Strangling was in 1967. . .a minute point but i thought i'd make it anyway.

Ooh, that's a major point in my book, Julia99! Every other time he wanted to kill her, Barnabas tried to strangle Julia. This time he actually planned to penetrate her neck with his fangs, how hot!
If only they'd gone through with it - just a little nip before the 1970 Barnabas I-Chinged his way in.

Yeah in an article (in one of the books). . .Matt Hall wrote how they decided to up the sexual tension by having Dr Hoffman be a woman and of all the things Barnabas ever did to Julia, the one thing he didn't do was bite her . ..:)
