Title: Couldn't they have TRIED.........
Post by: Raineypark on August 14, 2003, 05:22:08 AM
.....to give the impression of being in the future by making the clothes, well, futuristic ?

Carolyn's wearing a 70's macrame vest, for pete's sake!!

I guess by 1995 people were wearing whatever they choose.  I think Carolyn has lead a very sheltered life, she doesn't appear to me in her mental state to be the kind to go shopping.

I don't think she even wore macrame or crochet in the 1970 storyline.

Can't you just picture her in Wal-Mart dressed like that.

Perhaps Carolyn took a cue from her Mom and hermitized for 25 years. Poor dear.

I think Carolyn is trapped in the past, as much as she pretends not to dwell on the events of 1970, so it makes perfect sense to me that she would wear clothing that might be considered outdated for 1995.  She almost reminds me of Miss Havisham in this storyline (especially with her "party dress".)

Did I see someone mention macrame - the sexiest craft that has ever and will ever exist? [b003]

Obviously by wearing that vest, Carolyn is letting everyone know that even as a babbling 45-year-old, she still feels hot and sexy.  [smokn]

Hee hee, MB!

I can't begin to tell you how much Stokes' hearing aid bothers me.  They obviously gave no consideration to the fact that the device would only improve after 25 years.

You're getting predictable, Pepe....I'd have bet the house on YOU bringing that up. [smrtasb]

Now, how could I have possibly passed up on such a golden opportunity like that? [wink2]

 8) Since  this was filmed in 1970, I imagine that they had no concept of what styles were "in" in 1995. Hence the "fishnet" vest and the HUGE hearing aid. It seems that the writers covered this with the madness of Carolyn (she either won't or can't buy '90's clothing) and Stokes' eccentricity (wearing an obviously old hearing aid). This is not uncommon! I have a neighbor who is 105 yrs. old and still shovels coal into his furnace, owns but doesn't drive a 1956 Dodge (he pays someone to keep it in shape), and STILL has a rotary phone.  I guess that's not too bad!

And this is the man who still wears a monocle. Wearing a hearing aid with a wire doesn't seem at all unlike something he might do.

Considering the fact that it is only 25 and not 100 years or more into the future, I don't think the 1995 clothes should be all that futuristic.  Just think back 25 years and recall what you wore back in 1978 - those of you who were around then!  It wasn't all THAT different really.  Of course, I've never been a big fashion maven, so what I say may not reflect other people's experiences.

Stokes' hearing aid didn't bother me at all - I always saw the Professor as an old fashioned fellow anyway.  What caught my eye was the fact that he was wearing a positively Victorian necktie.  Now why would he be doing that?  I've heard of elders wearing the clothes that they wore in their younger days, but not about people regressing to the fashions of their parents and grandparents.  What's up with that?

Love this 1995 transition to the 1840 storyline, by the way!  Nancy Barrett's acting is especially impressive.  :D

Guess I need to start watching DS again, I thought they were still cavorting around in PT.

Just a thought here . . . it's never an easy thing to make futuristic attire look plausible. Look at ST:TOS with the women running round in the micro-minis at work. I'm thinking that it's probably a good thing that the DS crew didn't try and make the clothes seem futuristic.

i think they knew they were only going to in 1995 a short
time and ,as mentioned before, never thought anyone
would be watching this show decades later to discuss
it [lol2]

I have to keep reminding myself of that....we can rewind and look at things from different angles....they never thought this would be happening so many years later.

Like, the death scene of Mrs. Johnson.....she blinked her eyes after Carolyn got there.  I'm sure they never suspected that we'd be able say, "Wait a minute, did she just blink?" and rewind the tape.  I had just finished thinking how hard it must have been to keep her eyes open for so long and keep her face in that one position.  Then, as Carolyn was bending down to her, she started blinking like crazy.   :D

Love this show!!

c'ya!

And as we all know, Carolyn was very very sexy in 1970, so she can still try to be sexy in 1995 :)
