I see on msn's homepage, Buddy Ebsen died.
To me, when I think Buddy Ebsen, I think Wizard of Oz.
He was supposed to be the tin man, but had a bad reaction (IIRC) to the makeup.
Rest in peace Jed.

It's strange how these things always happen in clusters-- Gregory Peck, Katherine Hepburn, Buddy Ebsen. And also, Buddy Hackett and Barry White. :(

It was like ritual to watch The Beverly Hillbillies in our house. As kids, we even had a Clampett Mansion toy set (made out of paper) including the Seeee-ment Pond. And from 1973 to 1980, my mother would've cut off her hand than miss Barnaby Jones. It was fortunate that he was there to pick up the slack for all middle-aged women who were still pining over the cancellation of Lawrence Welk.

But God bless...the man was 95 years old (with K. Hepburn being 96/97...I've heard both ages).
Woosh!!!
Did anyone from DS ever make an appearance on Barnaby Jones?

I didn't know Buddy Hackett died. I just saw him on TV a week or two ago. Seeing him again after all these years reminded me of one of the funniest jokes I'd ever heard (as told by him).
This guys walks into the Dr's office and tells the doc that every time he sneezes he has an orgasm. The doc looks concerned and asks, "What are you taking for it?"
The guy says, "Pepper!" [lol2]
I believe it was on the Tonight Show and Buddy was asked to tell a dirty joke without using words that would be censored on TV. The punchline was so funny because of his attempt to say orgasm without saying orgasm.
I guess you had to be there... ::)

I remember Buddy Ebsen more from Beverly Hillbillies and from Barnaby Jones but I did see him dancing in several clips. He had such long legs, reminded me of Tommy Tune, and it was fun to watch him dance! Too bad he was allergic to the Tin Man makeup. Wonder how different his life would have turned out if he'd been able to stay in that role ...
95! God bless him!

Buddy wasn't actually allergic to the tin man make-up - unbelievably, originally it was a form of powered alluminium, which gradually coated the inside of his lungs. It's remarkable that he lived to be such an age given how much permanent damage he was left with.
I love the Beverly Hillbillies - it's just one of the few totally feelgood shows on television, which I'm sure will ensure he's missed for a long time to come.

I was surprised when I learned that Buddy Ebsen was to have played the Tin Man. Mr. Ebsen's style of dance and folksy manner was more suited to the Scarecrow than the stiff style of the Tin Man. Although, I would not have wanted Ray Bolger replaced with Buddy Ebsen. My favorite dance scene with Mr. Ebsen is in Captain January. May he rest in peace.
-
Funny you should say that...
Buddy actually was the first choice for the Scarecrow, but Ray Bolger apparently had a clause in his contract with MGM that gave him first refusal on the role and so Buddy was recast as the Tin Man instead.

Cool, Stuart, two bits of information about Buddy Ebsen I didn't know about.
I wish Barnaby Jones was being re-run somewhere. I'd like to see the episodes again, especially the ones with LP, KLS, and other DS stars.
-
Thanks for the info, Stuart. I think both men would have made memorable scarecrows.

My first thoughts about Buddy Epson was his role in the movie Captain January. Of course he was delightful as Jeb. Can you believe I had the Beverly Hillbillies Paper Dolls. My mother loved the theme song to the BH so we had a 45 of that. Sad to see so many wonderful actors pass away. I guess you can't say to much they were all up there in age.
May they find bliss in the life ahead.
