Title: OT: ABC Soaps in Depth 12/24/2012
Post by: Uncle Roger on December 07, 2012, 07:12:21 AM
Earlier this fall, I attended Daytime Stars and Strikes, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It was held at the Bowlmor Lanes in Times Square. Many actors from Guiding Light and One Life to Live came to bowl and mix with the fans. Like the DS Festival, they had a charity auction. One of the prizes was a photo in a future issue of ABC Soaps in Depth. And I won! As part of the prize, I got to select two actors to be in the picture with me. I chose Gina Tognoni and Ilene Kristen. Gina won two Emmy Awards for her work on Guiding Light. Ilene is a showbiz veteran and was of the original cast of Grease. They are both great ladies.

This is a bi-weekly publication and should be on sale until Christmas. The picture of me is on page 23.

Sure can, Patti. This year's attendees were Jerry Ver Dorn, David Gregory, Lea DeLaria, Shaun Ringgold, Kelly Missal, Shenelle Edmonds, Tonja Walker, Nathaniel Marston, Austin Williams, Andrew Trischetta, Patrick Gibbons, Tom Degnan and Patrick Gibbons. All very cool people. Most of them know me by name and quite a few of them hugged me. There were an equal number of actors there from Guiding Light but I'm afraid I don't know those people as well.

Is this an existing magazine? Sorry, I've never heard of it.
I don't see a link to an on-line site; is there an on-line site; if so, could someone put a link to the URL?

Thanks,

Patti

It's been around for several years, Patti. My supermarket carries it at the checkout counter. Maybe yours does too. The website is abc.soapsindepth.com. Or you can try googling ABC Soaps in Depth. Both should bring up the magazine's site. Let me know if you need further info.

Wow, Lea Delaria is on a soap.  I had not a clue.  Wonder what kind of role she has?  She was so great in Edge of 17.

Congratulations, Uncle Roger!

Best, Steve PS. to Patti I had never heard of the magazine either.  I thought the thread was going to be about a TV special that might contain footage of DS, All my Children, and maybe even OLTL with Grayson... sigh.

Yes, Gothick, Lea DeLaria had been on One Life to Live off and on since 1999. She played a kind of DS character, Madame Delphina, the local psychic. She was revealed to be a lesbian during the 2009 gay storyline. She also played her own male ancestor Professor Del Phina when a couple of characters time travelled back to 1968.

Thanks, Uncle Roger.  That does sound very DS.  I'll have to see if there are any clips on Youtube of Lea as Professor Del Phina in 1968.  What a hoot!  I wonder if they gave her a look reminiscent of our own dear Thayer as Professor Stokes...

Thanks for the info!

G.

Kinda did look a bit like Stokes, now that you mention it. Lea apparently had a blast doing the part.

FYI, Bob Woods said that he enjoyed working with Grayson and would have liked her to have joined the show permanently. Robin Strasser knew the Halls socially in the '60's. She and Grayson were involved in SOAP, which was Soap Opera Actors for Peace. They did a lot of anti-war stuff, like candlelight vigils in Central Park.

That's very cool to hear, Uncle Roger.  I've always been curious to hear more about SOAP and its work.  I only know about one vigil which was profiled in a media source--you've probably seen the photo.  Grayson looked very chic protesting for peace.  At the time, Lara and David Henesy were also both involved in SOAP. This was the autumn of 1969 (November).

Best, Gothick

Thanks, everyone!  Yeah, I had a blast at the event. The OLTL cast are all nice people and are so appreciative when fans turn up to support them. There are a couple of events scheduled for 2013 that I will most likely attend and I'll keep you guys posted if there are any future photo appearances.  [santa_rolleyes] [santa_azn]

OMG....does anyone have photos of this (especially DH & LP); this would be phenomenal to see!

Wow...I didn't know Robin Strasser was 'on the scene' yet at this time.

My most recent college course is complete (Hallelujah)...but I'm still receiving an education!!

(P.S.) My next course is anatomy ! oish ! oish !

Patti
I got a 94 in my last class, Document Production....it was a 4-credit course!

Congratulations on doing so well in your class, Patti!! [santa_thumb] [santa_thumb]

Robin Strasser was on Another World back then. She was the original Rachel. Her husband at the time, Lawrence Luckinbill, was Keith Prentice's partner in the film version of Boys in the Band.

I have at least one photo from the SOAP rally that features Grayson (and possibly LP and DH), but I won't post it here because this is Uncle Roger's topic.  [santa_smiley]  After I get the chance to track it down/scan it, I'll post it in a separate topic.  [santa_wink]

...see, now this is why MB is divine!!!

Wuv you,

Patti

PS, earlier, I found the site; I tried to copy the URL, but it wouldn't work. The main reason I wanted to copy it was because there were like 6 different shots with SIX different prices for the magazine...?
