Title: In the Mood?
Post by: ProfStokes on May 15, 2003, 07:33:13 AM
I just noticed a row of blue faces at the top of the board labeled "Moods."  When I clicked on a face experimentally, nothing happened.  Any clue as to what this curious new feature is?

Well, if you look above my post total here, you'll get a good clue. [wink2]

If you're using IE, try again. It might have been that I was still uploading the scripts. But if you're using Netscape 6.x, it doesn't seem to want to work. I'm not quite sure why that is because it works in Mozilla, which is the same as Netscape in practically every way that counts. And it also works in Opera. :-  But I suppose I'll figure out what's going on with Netscape sooner or later...

you must be getting along much easier with the new program.

OK - I'm beginning to suspect something VERY odd is going on with this new feature because the moods that are showing up in people's posts are moods that aren't even available!  ::)

Either the person who wrote this mod screwed up somewhere along the way - or the forum is haunted. :o I'm not sure which...

I rearranged the buttons to make room for some new ones that will be showing up shortly. ;)

Yes, working with PHP/MySQL is getting to be a lot easier than it was when we first started with this new system. But I've still got more to learn...

OK - despite the fact that I haven't changed my mood setting, two moods, totally different from the one I've set, are showing up in my posts in this topic - and one of them is wearing a hair ribbon!

I don't understand.

Oh, no! It's worse than I thought!! I'm channeling Victoria Winters!!!! :o

Well, not only are none of the people who've set a mood so far (Cassandra, Josette, ProfStokes, victoriawinters & myself) having anything approaching the right mood appear in their posts, but what's really odd is that people who haven't even set a mood (like jennifer and Midnite) are having moods show up in theirs!

I think the forum needs a thorough exorcism before this feature will be safe to use.

Hmmm - now where is that dowsing rod...

But I suppose I'll figure out what's going on with Netscape sooner or later...

Well, the good news is I figured out what Netscape's problem was. The person who wrote the Mood mod used "/>" where they should have only used ">" in the links, and Netscape is much more picky about that sort of syntax error than those other browsers are.

But I still might have to call in Prof. Stokes to perform that exorcism because, even though only the blue moods are displaying in posts, they're still acting screwy. Instead of displaying for the member who set them, moods are dropping down one post and displaying for the poster directly below them. So, apparently something else is going on here that I've yet to discover...

Gee, it's just amazing how well a script will work when its code is actually written correctly and put in the right spot! ::)

I guess I won't need Stokes' help after all. And unless there's some other glitch hidden in this mod that I've yet to come across, I'd say it should be safe for everyone to use it now.

It's a good thing that Midnite's and my mantra is "We don't need no stinkin' sleep!" because I certainly didn't get any. But I suppose there is one advantage to that - I can blame at least half of these posts on delirium. [lghy]

I'm not sure I follow how this works.  I assumed that one could choose a mood for an individual post.  I decided to try choosing one; nothing seemed to happen in the post (that was before you fixed it), but it did identify my mood at the top of my screen.

Once it was fixed, it turned up in the posts.  So, evidently it works like everything else, where whatever mood is chosen shows up in all one's posts.

I had assumed that if one was posting in a thread about someone who died, for instance, one could use a sad mood, and for a happy birthday post there could be a happy one, etc.  But, if the same thing shows throughout, then clearly that can't be done.

No, it can't. To do that someone would include one or more of the 274 smileys that are currently available for posting. The point of the Mood feature is just a fun way to show your fellow posters how you're feeling on a particular day or for a period of time. ;)

I'm assuming I can change my "mood" at any time by just clicking on a different blue smiley......but once you HAVE a mood, is it possible to delete whatever blue smiley you have without replacing it with another one?  Or is being moody now a permanant condition?

The way the mod was written, once you've selected a mood, being moody is permanent. But I've been considering changing that...

"Back" - and waiting for the pangs of a newly placed Italian curse or evil eye, lol.

But I'm not worried...  [a2a3]
