Title: A Few Belated Gaffes
Post by: Philippe Cordier on April 15, 2003, 01:07:50 AM
Who was it who used to regularly post about every mistake on practically every episode? I just realized that's been missing from this forum (his comments were always humorous)! Though I'm not on a crusade to bring back that tally sheet, I noticed three rather glaringy gaffes in fairly quick succession recently, so thought I'd mention them ...

Let's see, first there was that scene in Josette's room at the Great House on the night of her demise, when Barnabas came to her and KLS very deftly fed J. Frid his line -- something like "You mean we could be together that way now, don't you?"  (Mr. Frid had put the line in the past tense  ::) )

Then the next episode, I think it was, opened with a voiceover telling about Josette's demise in front of her portrait at the Old House, and the scene being shown was inside the Old House (we were still in 1796 at that point), where one spotted Julia Hoffman's 1970s wool coat hanging on the coat rack ...

Finally, either in that episode or the next one, after we had returned to 1970 and Julia was telling Carolyn about her experience in 1897 (I didn't recall at all that Carolyn even knew about this ...) and how she was waiting for Barnabas' return, and then Julia overhears the voices of Magda and Pansy (Faye) talking in 1897.  They are discussing how Barnabas disappeared with Josette in the Old House and haven't been seen since.  Pansy insists that Magda should know what's happened because "you were friends with Barnabas, weren't you?"  Magda agrees that she was, but that she hadn't seen Barnabas for "two weeks."  Wait a minute!  Magda was "friends" with the "old," vampire Barnabas ... not the "new" Barnabas who appeared on the scene after Pansy staked "the vampire"!  And that must have been more than two weeks ago! Looks like a writer goofed on that one, and no one caught it ...  ;D

I didn't realize this either but apparently Carolyn and now Liz knew quite alot about what was taking place down in the old house basement.  Liz had mentioned today to Barnabas about how "there were no more ghosts" and "how happy she was to be back at Collinwood."  Then went on to tell him how thankful she was to him for all he had done.  After that it was all dropped.  You would think that if someone had just returned from your family history's past that you'd want to know all kinds of things about your past relatives and so on.  But for them it's just like another normal occurance at Collinwood!

Carolyn too didn't seem all that suprised when Julia was talking about her trip from the past.  I had first thought that when the show returned from 1897 to the present, that we'd find everyone still living over at the old house, but instead, everyone's nice & cozy back at Collinwood as if nothing happened at all!

That's right Vlad. The "new" Barnabas wasn't even living at the old house when he returned.  He was staying over at Collinwood as their guest so there's no way that Magda could have become friendly with him.   The only person that Barnabas had told about him and Lady Kitty getting married (at least what we see) was Judith and that was right before he left to go see Kitty at the old house.

I also caught the old-Barnabas/new-Barnabas whoopsie as well, but just shrugged it off along with Josette's portrait being painted in 1797, et. al.

Yeah, Vlad - I noticed Magda's Barnabas comment too, and wondered if it got her into any trouble once Edward questioned her about the disappearances.  Although I'm sure it was just sloppy writing, the implication is that everyone at Collinwood in 1897 might have figured out they'd been duped about the two Barnabas Collinses.

The portrait date really had me going. To see the date written in large red numbers as 1797 had to be the most riduculous thing that I've ever seen.  What kind of artist signs a painting like that?   And to top that off Josette had been long dead and buried by that date!
