Barnabas has given up on making her his bride, at least for the moment, so she has been forced to give up Josette’s wedding finery for a plain, dark robe.

Maggie gives Willie the ring, knowing his love of jewels. But David finds the ring, and Maggie's last chance of rescue fades as Willie doesn't believe David. Unfortunately for Willie, David gives the ring to Vicki, who gives it to Barnabas. I have a sinking feeling that Willie is going to endure yet another beating.

Wasn't Maggie wearing some strange cheap plastic ring when she was in the hospital?

Barnabas has softened towards Maggie, giving her a second chance.  She's not interested.  Would she be more interested if she knew that she now has a rival for Barnabas's affections?  No, probably not.  She's true to Joe.

As I watched her despairing, I thought about being locked in that room, knowing that my only way out was death.  And for me, that's final: I do not believe in life after death.  But Maggie's world is different.  She has learned that the supernatural does exist.  If Barnabas murders her - not to make her a vampire, just to make her dead - that won't necessarily be final.  In her position, despite the awfulness, I think part of my mind would be saying, "Sort of unexpected...what are the implications?"  And I'd have to laugh at myself for being so utterly wrong.  But Maggie probably has believed in life after death all along, so the existence of vampires does not change her view of the universe.

Interesting idea, Lydia. Even if Maggie never sees Joe again, she would still be loyal to him, I'm sure. She might think she will come back as a ghost, just to keep her pop company. We already know that Joe doesn't believe in an afterlife.

Who comes back as a ghost and especially why are left frustratingly wide open on DS.   It always gets me when some villain offs someone gleefully, assured her/his problems are over, and then the offee comes back and goes boo.   The villain is caught completely by surprise, and the villain is often a supernatural creature of some kind, who really ought to have thought of this contingency...  Yet at the same time, so many people don't come back, that you almost can't fault them for not expecting it.  Almost.

I know when Maggie was in bed at her house, she had on some huge dime store ring. I was going to say we're did Sam get the money to buy such a nice ring, but then I remembered the payoff.  The knocker has appeared on the door, but even though the door is locked silly Barnabas has not thought about his callers coming in through the windows.

My impression was that the payoff all went towards hospital bills and making Maggie's mother more comfortable in her illness, not towards luxuries like a ring.  Maybe the ring was Maggie's mother's engagement ring.

That's a thought, Lydia. Maybe Sam hung on to the engagement ring even when times got bad. Especially after Maggie's mom died, it would have huge sentimental value for Sam and Maggie.
